In this video for Production Expert made with the support of Universal Audio, Technical Editor James Ivey invites Paul Sundt (Guitar) and Danny Adams (Bass and Vocals) to record a track with him using 2 Universal Apollo X16 audio interfaces. James also shows how he uses the UA Apollo 16 Generation 2 in a console workflow allowing him to access many great UAD-2 effects emulations.

It really really really goes to show its all about the songwriting and not the gear! Fantastic to get that reminder.

First off - love the music, well done! Second - I moved from an Apollo 8p to the x16 and outboard preamps. I am also clocking externally with a Grimm CC2. Both generations benefited from the external clocking in my setup, but the x16 is really a big jump in quality over the previous generation 8p. I always wondered about the difference with the black-face 16, so thank you for answering that question! Again, great band and awesome vocals!

Fantastic video! Love the song and performances are every bit as good as the sonic quality of the recording. Thanks for posting.

Nice hybrid set up. I am eventually getting a second X16 to finish out my UA chain of 3 Octo PCIe cards in a TB3 Chassis and an Apollo X4 . I agree with your drum channels. When doing rock the drums need to be loved. I have not used the Ocean Ways Studio for awhile but I am going to have to try it on my current project. I used it on my Steinway Grand and I remember being impressed.

Great video and great sounds, James! Could you elaborate a little bit on why it's "not so neat" to use the small faders as returns? I always thought that being able to essentially double the available inputs for mix down was a big selling point for in-line consoles.

Amazing song!!! You guys have good chemistry. There is definitely a difference btwn the third and second generation apollos. I'm still on the first gen but I don't plan on upgrading soon.

Sir, love your videos. Could you explain (or could you recommend a video) showing specifically how - 1. you're routing mic inputs into these Apollos, and 2. how you're connected using 3 audio interfaces into 1 computer? And then how Protools is configured to use 3 audio interfaces?

I appreciate your insightful videos as always. Nice T shirt by the way. Great drumming too. Great sounding snare as well. The X16 snare has more of an open crisp sound. You got a killer setup in your studio. Love my Focal Twins as well. Mixes always come out great with them. The Audient is a great console. Wow you even have a monitor in the drum room. I like the treatment you have in the drum room. You really spent a lot of time working on getting a great drum sound. I just purchased the Apollo X8 (as I use Superior Drummer 3) as I am a guitar player. I was initially happy with the converters but then started to look at other options. I realized I am just fine with the X8 converters. Do you guys have music we can download? Would be interested In hearing full songs you recorded.

The snare drum has a dampener that is loose when recording on the Apollo 16 and then tight on the Apollo 16x to make is sound more punchy. Check out the video and watch the little dampener moving up and down when the Apollo 16 in recording and then it doesn't move at all really when the Apollo 16x is recording.

is that a RME ADI 2 pro on top of the shelf? do you think RME converters are better than UA Twin X? if so, in what way....... will appreciate if you can tell us what you find.......the UA DAC is not as good to my ears..... so my question is about the DAC part.... thanks!

I can not believe how big the difference between black and x is. It’s like as if the kick mic was not present on the Apollo black. In the other comparisons I have heard the difference was not so big. Could there be a mistake. Like a lower volume from the kick mic. Or some phase issues in the low frequencies?

Are those recordable midi faders? If they are then why not just have them performing your volume automation and bring the audio in prefade instead of post fade?

What thunderbolt cable did you use cause I feel like you went further than the standard short ones.

Asking respectfully, I don't pick up on that significant (or any) difference. I'm listening on ipad speakers. Could it be that or some compression that squelches it all..or just my 62 y/o ears? I try so hard to be in agreement the X series is worth it but I never hear it. If I can't hear it, I can't use it I think.

PROS: X16 = better low end and a nice separations. Quality defined sound. Better conversion. Apollo 16 = More natural sound. CONS: X16 = Something is strange in the midrange of frequencies. And have heard the same strange mushy midrange appearance on other tracks. So seems to be a general characteristic of the X16. Apollo16 = less DSP power actually undersized DSP power. Summery: I prefer X16 BUT UA has to do better work on the midrange. Has to be more defined and clear.

Is the quality as equally immaculate on the other Apollo X devices?

It's the same . Great interface ! Pricey but worth it . Those plug ins are crazy good.
@arnaldosantiago

The problem is about the acoustics. The interface don't do a miracle. I have an Apollo x8p and before I haved a black Apollo. The best investment I do for my studio and for my music is a better acoustic treatment. My records is much much better. Thanks for the video anyway ! Cheers !

I hear a little Lynyrd Skynyrd influence on the track,... yummy! Was looking at a an Audient console for my studio upgrade,... what is the shekel count for your Audient if you don't mind me asking?

@theredfaceofficial

jupita tv What are you talking about? Thunderbolt 3 is much faster than USB C. TB3 works at up to 40 Gbps and USB C works up to 10 Gbps. Apollo’s can be chained via Thunderbolt and that too with very minimal fluctuation on bandwidth. USB C interfaces are more for the budget market!
