Please make a lesson of this recording on your website. This is a great example, amazing musician, great sounds! Always love your content Daniel. Truly a gem.

Thanks, what do you mean with making a lesson, do you recommend making a paid masterclass with the mix of this project? Or a Jazz-Mixing Masterclass in general? Or a start to finish, on that project? I wonder if there would be enough buyers, if it only is about mixing jazz, but I am always open to suggestion. Next big thing to be released next week is the Reverb Bible.

Thanks for your Feedback! Share the video and let others know, because this is, what is needed, if you (all followers) would want to let me go on with this. I always got unbelievable comments, how great everyone feel's the deep content is, however the channel also need's you, to tell others, otherwise it stays too small.

Wow! This is such a valuable set of information for a relative newcomer to recording. I have recorded in studios a few times over the years, but recently had a session with my own jazz piano trio. I wanted to understand more about how we were recorded and how the mix would be done. Thank you for the time and trouble in putting together this wonderful video.

Thanks. Yes, if you want to understand more about that topic, I highly recommend my mixing bible, available here: www.danieldettwiler.com/course/daniels-mixing-bible There I really go into the details, explaining about why we need to first learn to analyze sound before we actually really can be able to mix it:-).

Thanks so much for another video. I’d like to hear your opinions of mic preamp choices for each mic. I personally love my SPL crescendo preamp for recording anything acoustic. and also, if you sometimes compress (on the way in), using outboard compressors.

Thanks! First: It would be great, if you let others know about that vid. If you are posting at some user groups, then let them know. When I record at the Jazzcampus Basel, I use the Untertone Preamps, that are installed there. Also some GML for the more transparent stuff. This recording from Silvan, I recorded at my old Stuido (Idee und Klang Studio, Basel). There I normally select great mics (as we have all the classic ones), und then usually I record directly via a Merging Horus. I like the transparency of the Horus very much. As I mix analog and have great outboard, whatever mic needs character I would add it there. That's my actuall thinking of mic pres.

@@danieldettwiler.official When using Horus, do you usually record everything in DSD format first and convert them to PCM and mix them? On which sample rates do you mix and export?
@danieldettwiler.official

@ no, I record everything at 96 kHz. Best compromise.

A lot of useful information. Thank you. A question here, hopefully not too much off topic - and in regard of the international audience in English: I was looking for an amateur friendly way to record drums in a live looping situation, while other instruments are playing. There is, of course, no physical way to keep these recordings clean and separated. Would you think, that it would be possible to make a fairly good separation with the help of a gate if only it could be tweaked precisely enough? Or maybe you have other ideas? I asked AI if there is an AI-driven thing to do that. And there is - but with 80 ms of latency - so doesn’t work in live situations. All considerations will greatly be appreciated. Zsolt / Dornach

I would like to help, but there are too many variables in your setup. I would not use a gate though...

Yeah - for this particular purpose I use 4 microphones and try to CLOSE mike bass drum, snare, hihat and ride - no room microphones. (Bass Drum is actually a cajon, I record using an interfacial microphone within the box, so that is shielded well) So under these circumstances you would say that there is no solution at all?

Maybe you shouldn't call the bass player an 'F-hole'
