Tracked some drums at home for an EP recently. It’s amazing what you can do with 5 mics (kick, snare top, knee, stereo overheads) and Ocean Way to add room space. You obviously got more value from the additional mics here, but your sound was also great with just the first 5 mics.

Sounds great man! The world has too many sample packs and there’s nothing better than scratch made organic music. Especially when you record and produce from start to finish. It’s very rewarding. Also very cool to see how others do it. Thanks for sharing.

The crotch mic is ESSENTIAL to get the 3D sound of a drum kit. Why it works, if you use a dirt mic (like Andrew does, its kind of saturated and somewhat distorted) it will enhance the midrange punch and the "room" information in the sound. Its gold!.. you can enhance it by hiparsing at 80-100 hz and lowparse at 10-12kHz (depending on your needs). That way you eliminate possible issues with the low end and possible messing with the overheads. Well.. thats just my experience. I use a simple almost linear condenser for it mostly (does not have to be expensive!.. i use a KEL HM-1, which sadly is not produced anymore), but in fact almost any mic can be used , as long a s your know what you want from it. Slate ML-2 is also good.. but so is a MXL CR89 for that matter.. just try it out. A SM57 is also super duper, just different Andrew: your videos are GOLD man!... fat backbeat to you from a fellow drummer and studio geek! Oh and those WFL III?... WOW!
@kebbinator

It’s high pass and low pass, not hiparse and lowparse. As in you are passing through only the high/low frequencies.

I’m a big fan of using the Rupert Neve Shelford Channel Preamps for all of my EQing. I use plugins sparingly but I ALWAYS use a Manley Massive Passive, Tube Tech MK II by Softube, and the UAD K-Stereo Ambience Recovery plugin. Everything else is done with hardware (Rupert Neve Designs Portico II, Pultecs, Shelfords, UA 6176/1176, etc).

I’ve always used a mono room mic due to not having enough mics or preamps to use stereo rooms. And I’ve come to love the sound of it.
@TimMilliken
@TimMilliken 2 года назад
Room mics are always experimental. Your room is pretty dead. I’d just do a mono or xy and search for a unique spot. I do like what you did with the processing on them. I also love m160s. I like Ocean Way convolution on an aux for individual mics. Really eliminates the need for a room mic and solves many problems like the phase you were dealing with.

@AndrewMasters
@AndrewMasters 2 года назад
Yeah that's fair, if you've never produced a rock song it might be harder to see the big picture. I'll document the rest of the song and it'll become clear towards the end of the production. The tracking portion isn't as glamorous as you'd think but as you build out the song it reveals itself.

I am looking at an AEA R88 for overheads, but noticed you went for N8's? Was it so you could have more choice on stereo placement or is there more to it? Would appreciate your view. Great videos and a great sound as well!
@ethanlerway
@ethanlerway 2 года назад
The R88 is awesome for OH’s IF you don’t really need super wide separation on crash/ride cymbals. I’ve never liked an XY or blumlein OH’s by themselves. I prefer a spaced pair with a mono OH. I’m currently using Soyuz 013’s as my spaced pair and an AEA R92 as my mono OH and it’s sick. The R88 is cooler for a room sound or paired with like LDC’s in a Glyn Johns setup IMO

Non-recording question, how is the battery life with the EOS R? How often do you have to change your batteries while you film?
@AndrewMasters
@AndrewMasters 2 года назад
I’m actually on the eos r5, it’s not bad off your filming non stop you probably get an hour and a half off a standard canon battery. But you can get the battery grips which last longer.
@djtone69
@djtone69 2 года назад
@@AndrewMasters ahhh okay, the description says EOS R. haha. But oh okay, doesnt sound too bad. Any problems with overheating at 4k 60 if you shoot in that? Or do you only stay in 4k 24 for your videos? I'm debating between an R and R5 but leaning towards an R5 bc its the mirrorless version of the 5D series lol

@maxwellbrewer8637
@maxwellbrewer8637 2 года назад
Why don’t you just sample your drums and then they can be on the grid? The amount of edits you made is absolutely absurd and what is wrong with the music industry today.
@AndrewMasters
@AndrewMasters 2 года назад
Because it would sound terrible. Editing the drums like I did took less than five minutes. It’s a very simple and common practice. Most people are just oblivious to the fact that almost everything is edited like this, from pop to heavy metal for at least the last 23 years that I personally know of.
@maxwellbrewer8637
@maxwellbrewer8637 2 года назад
@@AndrewMasters just because everybody is doing it doesn’t mean you have to follow suit. What is so hard about showing the world what you actually have to offer? I’m sure it sounded fine without all those edits.

@maxwellbrewer8637 Год назад
@@AndrewMasters I guess according to your logic here, the drum samples you’re releasing on Monday will sound terrible 🤣 your words not mine bro
@AndrewMasters
@AndrewMasters Год назад
@@maxwellbrewer8637 lol so dumb. Mixing with drum samples is just as common as editing drums. Using drum loops to produce and write is awesome. Constructing an entire drum part from drum samples is silly if you can track the performance. Editing live drums sounds fantastic, but still requires a fantastic performance as there is much more to a great performance than just time. I love that everyone has their way and rules they follow. I’m simply showing how I do things. You’re welcome to never use a click track of make an edit if that’s what makes the song sound right. More power to you.
