Headphones on! A number of people have asked me about how I record the audio for my raw onboard riding footage. Here is a quick overview of what makes for good motorcycling audio, and the recorder and attachment method I use for capturing the sound of my 2019 Triumph Speed Twin.

I forgot to mention at 6:20 that only the North American-spec Speed Twins have the 3-in-1 rear lights. In most or all other markets there is a central 2-in-1 taillight/brake light that would be obscured by this mic setup.

For anyone wondering, the lo cut filter removes sound from low frequencies (think bass). For example, If you have an aftermarket exhaust it may give you an audio clip that is way too bass heavy and may have a horrible drone sound when cruising. With the low cut filter on it will essentially taking the bass out of those boomy clips leaving you with the rest of the audio more treble sounding.

Thank you for this explanation, that explains why my first ride sounded so muted, the low end bass was completely missing lol. I'll be turning low cut off from now on.

Actually sound that you record awesome. I also have zoom h1 but tried multiple time in backpack it gave just bumping sound over 90km/h i will also try your setup hopfully will it work 👏🏻do you have any other advice for example input level of that microphone does it also much matter?

Hey ! I have a Speed twin too and loving it ! Great video, you have great sound too but you probably noticed like me that with this motorcycle, the mic is always recording a chain or transmission noise while cruising, tried everything and cant get rid of it 😏. The only time we dont hear it is when we put the bike under load, everything is becoming fine. Maybe some day we will find it haha have a nice one !
@VanBlamm
@VanBlamm 2 года назад
Thanks! Hah that is very true. It's the reason I generally only use onboard audio clips that show acceleration. I think the extra noise is a combination of the fuel pump and the chain running.
@motorings735

Thanks for sharing, I've been wondering how you get such clear exhaust audio. I saw a guy in town with his mic gaffer taped to the pillion seat on his bike. Was pretty cool, because he was saying that he just swapped out the soft seat with the mic for with a hard cover when he wasn't recording.

lol very informational, I recent got into electric scooter and want to get into vlogging or making video, been trying to figure out how to record audio, it's been bloody difficult weighing the pros and cons and price of different type of set ups. lol i was thinking of putting the audio recorder insider the bag, but guess this is bad option, guess i will go with mounting it directly on the scooter with wind muff and sync it in post production

@VanBlamm
@VanBlamm 3 года назад
I'm glad Triumph is making it. The other Triples keep getting faster and more complicated, so it's nice that they're making sure there's still a more approachable model in that lineup. I personally don't like the looks, but maybe it'll grow on me over time.

Do you ever experience some interference while recording? If so, did you manage to control the interference? I'm using the same settings as you are Low cut filter on Mp3 320kbps Tho I manually set the input to 25 Some say it might be from the cellphone on my pocket but the zoom H1 is relatively far from my phone. There's also some saying that it's from the electric cables I'm passing while I'm riding. I was wondering if you have a tip for shielding the mic from the interference. Thanks in advance.
@VanBlamm
@VanBlamm 2 года назад
Hmm. My audio quality is imperfect, more so at some times than others, but I figured it was just the odd vibration or lick of wind reaching the mic. Nothing that sounds like electrical interference. I unfortunately don't have any tips for shielding it, but if you try something and have success I'd love to hear about it!

About the same setup as mine, except I've got a Zoom 2 and a Euro tail light, so I'm stuck with putting it under the seat strap. The Zoom 2 is huge and also has no negative gain. BTW. Check your pocket zips before you go riding 😋
@VanBlamm
@VanBlamm 3 года назад
That is SO funny you mention the pocket zips; I forget to zip my jacket pockets all the time but have never had anything fall out, however on my way home from NYC the other day I left my riding pants pocket unsnapped and lost my wallet somewhere along the Jersey Turnpike. Won't be making that mistake again!

What gain is the zoom set at?
@RogerGJager
@RogerGJager 2 года назад
Just out of curiosity…..you mount it outside…do you get any pops or distortions? I have just recorded my first video with Zoom H1n in backpack and get some pops and it is maybe too loud. Now have in plan to mounted it outside (under the seat) and it might get even louder. My bike makes over 103db at ~4000rpm My settings are: Wav Locut off Limiter off Auto level off Gain 5.5-6.0 (Can see the video on my channel (last video))…..so I don’t past it here TIA
@VanBlamm
@VanBlamm 2 года назад
I sometimes get pops and distortion, but not all the time. I think my biggest problem is that I pick up a lot of drivetrain noise (chain, fuel pump, etc) in addition to the exhaust. A backpack setup will capture more wind noise than you might expect, unless you set it up very carefully. I think yours sounds pretty good.
@RogerGJager
@RogerGJager 2 года назад
@@VanBlamm thank you for reply. In my video, there is every now and then a “small/short” pops….it doesn’t sound as clear as your sound capture! And that is in backpack (no wind noise problem), but what will be when mounted outside (as yours-from where idea)….! O think riding and testing will a answer :) Ride safe mate 🤜🏻🤛🏻

245 / 5000 Resultados de traducción Awesome. When I put the recorder in the backpack directly and not in a pocket, the air is very loud. I would never thought that direct-to-air recorder works so well. I will test it in my next ride, but It hurts me to stick those things to my streety;-). Nothing in post production? Thanks!!!
@VanBlamm
@VanBlamm 3 года назад
I understand the hurt, but I don't mind if my bike shows that I'm a videographer. I don't do anything to the audio in post-production other than syncing it and making sure the volume level stays consistent. I'm sure I could improve it even more in post, I just haven't gone down that rabbit hole yet. Thanks for watching!

It's mind boggling that Gopro still doesn't have wireless microphone options to avoid post-prod syncing every time you shoot something. Moto vloggers have been dealing with this for probably 2 decades now.

I just have a lav mic inside the chin bar of my helmet. It's wedged under the cheek pad, peeking out in front of my mouth just a tiny bit. A foam deadcat and the helmet's cloth chin curtain are the only things keeping the wind out. I actually don't think my setup sounds all that great, especially at higher speeds. If I can do better with my next helmet I'll be sure to provide a breakdown video.
@davidkris

@@VanBlamm Thanks, putting it under the cheek pad is a good idea. I'm wearing a motocross helmet and it's just wide open for my goggles so the wind is crazy.
