This #bluegrass #fingerpicking #instrumental by ‪@RoderickNewport‬ is yet another comparison of a Martin D-28 and a Recording King RD-328 Acoustic Guitar recorded using a #eartrumpetlabs Edwina Microphone. I love both of my guitars and actually record with the Recording King a lot more. I like the way it sits in the mix of most of the songs I record it on. My Martin is awesome too, I don't record with it so much as I really don't want to knock it around and ding it up to be honest.

I actually prefer the RD-328. Warmer, less mid. Like the difference between a cheap mic and a nice compression mic. I expected it to be the other way around.

They're both really good! Honestly the recording King maybe even has just a little something on the Martin. The forward bracing and the Andirak spruce sounds good to me... However, the recording King maybe sounds a little newer off the shelf.. like it hasn't quite opened up all the way.... They're both factory guitars though... And there's going to be a lot of discrepancies from guitar to guitar.... Martin does have better quality control. Martin really needs to bring their factory guitar prices down... For very little more you can get a handmade bench guitar.... That will own a factory D-28... Unless you happen to get the one in 10 That happened to be cut to the thickness and braced in the way that makes that particular top really come alive.

Hello @ramspencer5492 and thank you for watching and your comment. The Recording King and the Martin in the video are both pretty new. Both were bought about the same time, a little over a year ago now. On the video both guitars are “as is” from the factory, I didn’t do any adjustments or replace the strings. Those are the factory strings in that video. That Recording King is really starting to open up now. I use it on almost all of my recordings even though I have other guitars to use, including the Martin you see in the video. I think the Recording King RD-328 sits in the mix better than most of the guitars I own. I also like the fact I can take it to a studio and not worry about scratching a 3000.00+ guitar. 😁

The RD328 vs the D28 - I own/play both. I use the D28 on stage indoors; I use the RD28 on stage/in the street outdoors. It gets rained on, sunned on and generally banged around and I'd rather it took the abuse. Which one plays/sounds better? They play the same because I set them up the same action-wise. Soundwise? That depends. For much of what I do, I play then both plugged in and with the same brand pickup so they can sound the same/however I want them to sound. Acoustically the Martin has more authority and can produce more volume. With medium (13/53) strings on both, the 328 will "choke" with hard picking/strumming. At some point, hitting it harder doesn't produce any more volume - like using a limiter. The D28 just keeps getting louder and louder. Its volume limit is based on your physical strength. Obviously, in a studio or solo use this doesn't matter much but in a live bluegrass band, it does. If you were playing at home in your room or around the campfire (does anybody actually play around the campfire?), it wouldn't make a nickle's worth of difference sound wise regardless which guitar was used. Nobody is going to say, "We would have sounded better singing "Sweet Caroline" if you had used a Martin D28 rather than that Chinese guitar." OTOH, if you are into "image"...I have had many people come up and say, "Nice guitar!" when I'm using the D28. Nobody says that when I'm using the 328! ;) The 328 is a superb value. The D28...not so much. BUT if I had to pick one of the two to keep, it would certainly be the D28.

I can buy a new RD-328 now for $640 before state tax. I'm thinking about it but the reports of poor quality control (and that V neck profile) worry me.

Hello @louisfryzel4618 thanks for watching. If it is possible, I recommend visiting your local Mom and Pop music store, somewhere you can try out a bunch of guitars including the RK 328. I have sold and played thousands of guitars and they all sound and play differently than each other, even the same brand and model, all play and sound different. You will want to try the V-neck out to see if you like it. I really like it and prefer it at this point, but everyone is different. Like I mentioned in a previous reply, one of the best guitars I have ever heard was a Martin, one of the worst guitars I have heard was a Martin. I think some pieces of wood want to grow up and be a table instead of a guitar😂 While you are comparing guitars you may find out the Expensive Guitar sounds and plays better than all, you may also find out that 180.00 guitar sounds and play better than all. I did a quick demo of a Recording King RDS-7 ($180.00) and I thought it sounded great, imo. I agree 100%. My 328 is my go-to guitar when I am recording. I love the way it sits in the mix. I have a RK banjo I use on everything. Thank you for watching and your comment.😁

I have played both guitars and the RK is a very good value without question, however, I repeat however, the lower bass resonance and traditional tone and sustain of the Martin supercede’s the RK in so many ways. The RK is a better value than Martin but not a better guitar for sure. Simply depends on what your ear demands in appreciation for great guitar tone. If both were the same price, which would you choose….

Hi Rob and thanks for the great question. “If both guitars were the same price which would I choose?”. Let me start off by saying I do have and play both guitars. I have also worked at music stores and recording studios my whole life and have sold hundreds of Martins as we were dealers. I can truthfully say I have heard Martins that sound Great, and I have also heard Martins that sound like they have a blanket thrown over them. Every single one is different in sound and playability. When it comes to recording you want a guitar that sits in the mix. Sometimes that bass you describe from a Martin can make the mix a bit boomy, and you end up taking that out anyways. The Recording King guitar just sits in the mix very nicely and requires very minimal equalization. I love my Martin, but I find myself using the Recording King for myself and in other artist sessions way more. I do know a lot of Bluegrass Players today think you have to have a certain brand of guitar, banjo and mandolin, but the old-timers from long ago played what they could afford. It was rarely the brands mentioned today and those recordings sound great. By itself, my Martin sounds better than my Recording King, imo., but when it comes to playing well with others, that is a different story.

Hello, my Martin in the video was Brand-New, I took it right out of the case and recorded that demo. Factory strings and no adjustments. It is now about a year old, and it really has opened up and sounds even better now. Thank you for watching and your comment. 😁

Problem with RK is you never know what you'll get when you order one online....their quality control is not consistent.

I have always said I think some pieces of wood just don’t want to be a guitar, maybe a table or something. I have sold and played thousands of guitars and every one sounds different. The worst guitar I have heard is probably a Martin, the best guitar I have heard is probably a Martin. I would not recommend buying any guitar online. You really need to hear and play the guitar before purchasing. If you can, find yourself a good Mom and Pop music store; somewhere that not only sells instruments but also does repairs. Thank you for watching and your comment! 😁

You got it! Got to play it.....I buy a mess from guitar center because I can ship it in and test it at the store....I rarely leave with the guitar....new ones I get all my money back....used ones I lose about 20.00 for shipping. Just returned a Recording King about 3 weeks ago....great neck....piece of crap sound.@@RoderickNewport

@@cugir321 Thanks for the reply. Keep searching, I am sure you will find that perfect guitar. I have played a few inexpensive brands I thought sounded good. One Brand is called Walden, and the other is called Vintage. I just did a demo of a Recording King RDS 7 that I thought sounded good too. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GISy5SbuR9w.html

Hello @rodneykitchen3869, it is nice that there really are alternatives to the Martin. I still record mostly with Recording King you see in the video as it just sits nicely in the mix(s). I do record with the Martin too but will lean more towards the RK for a session. Thank you for watching and your comment. 😀

Hello James, I checked out your RU-vid channel and the guitar you are playing looks like a Recording King RDS-7-TS. The one in this video is the RD-328. I went ahead and made a video with the guitar you have. 😁ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GISy5SbuR9w.html
