Same guitars... BUT ONE IS €55.000! 

This is probably the first video where I've heard the difference between a new and vintage acoustic and the difference actually made sense.

So now 3k guitars are the "cheaper" ones

Both guitars sounded amazing, but the second one was insane. I can't believe how detailed the sound was. Beautifully recorded too.

The 2019 sounds so thin compared to the 1942 one. I wonder why. You say something like the age of the 1942 model has somehow 'ripened', like wine. What do you think, will the 2019 get the same sound 80 years from now or is Martin simply not able to create a sound like that right now. Groetjes.

This is the first time I've actually heard a difference in tone from a vintage to new guitar. Absolutely stunning.

A better comparison would have been a 2019 Martin HD 28 since it would have forward shifted scalloped bracing just like the 1942 does the 2019 D 28 only has forward shifted bracing not scalloped

The '42 sounded wide open, incredible. The 2019 needs a few years to open up. Whether it will ever get to sound as great as the '42 is anyone's guess. But it'll sure sound better with age. I wish I could afford either of them. Both amazing. Wish I could play as well as him too. So many wishes...

Even with my iPhone 11 Pro built in speakers (Stereo) I could tell the difference. The 1942 D28 sounded so open, more ressinent and the frequency range seemed HUGE compared to the new one; which sounded great still. Thanks for making this video!

I can only imagine how beautiful that Martin sounds live. You know a guitar sounds good when another great sounding guitar sounds like 200 bucks acoustic in comparison. Crazy.

It’s 15X the $ because it is rare, old, collectible... and the sound cannot be replicated with new materials... the question that cannot be answered is, “Is it 15X better... great video btw... high quality production and entertaining... Bravo

WOAH! The 1942 sounds so, so, SO much better! It's loud, crispy and balanced at the same time and even with lousy youtube audio compression you could feel the difference. Worlds apart guitars. But like you said, both sounded amazing, one slightly more "jangly" and treble focused and the other one more rounded and mellow. Awesome video!

The 2019 Martin D-28 is the worst it will sound in its brand new state. Get it and make your own history...admittedly, the 1942 is amazing, but very difficult to justify the cost of ownership. I have owned my 2002 D-28 fresh out of the box...I will never give that guitar up until the day I pass...it's so good...was good out of the box, but even so much better! My musical partner!

You can really tell your picking on the 2019 is activating the compressor on your audio, whereas the 1942 is so resonant that you don't have to work so hard to get a strong sound out of it. Seems like you really have to convince that 2019 to play in comparison to the 1942.

Just wait. In 75 years, your Martin will sound just as beautiful. ;-p

I would like to see a comparison between the vintage, and a D-28 that's maybe a few years old....it takes time for a guitar to open up. That 2019 sounded really tight. I have a 2012 D-28 and it took a solid year before it really started to sound the way one would expect.

I’m one of those tone-deaf people that annoys my friends when we go to the guitar shop because I can barely tell the difference between how a $300 and a $3000 guitar sounds (hey, I’m a bass player), but this is like night and day. That 1940s guitar sounds AMAZING! Buy it! Please! You only live once!

They both have amazing sound and very very similar but you can really hear that the old one sounds slightly more open and nice. Thats what age does. It just gradually sounds a bit better as it ages

Nice, but definitely not 52,000 euro difference. An extra 500 to 1000 euro would be more fair IMO. Knock knuckle on body, pluck bass then treble strings will tell you most or effect your choice of an acoustic guitar. I'm no expert, but it is all about the sound chamber, materials and solid construction (Maybe even glue, especially bonding!). First and foremost to note, is the the top on the vintage is one piece, whereas the new is made from 2 pieces. Not sure about the backs, but this alone must and will make a difference however large or slight. One solid piece must most definitely be better no matter how much someone tells you different. If it was just down to water retention, then I suppose they could very easily and quickly remedy that. But I'd suspect it has more to do with the less weight, wood choice, thickness and density of the main body (including drier timbre of course) that is effecting its resonance and tone. That's taking into consideration that the dimensions and ribs of the body are exact and the strings were both new and of the same gauge of course. Still again, nowhere near 53K worth of difference.IMO But I concur, definitely superior in sound, and in manufacture to note.

I have 1975 "Melodija Menges" Acoustic dreadnut. Bro, sound literally the same like 42". + It is also beautiful loud - IT IS THE SAME my man! I used 2 different brand high quality headphones, and confirmed it 100%. The same. Only that one have Martin written on it, that is the only difference. Did not knew that i have the same sound like one of the best guitars ever made. + I play through the strings with 1.50mm and there was NEVER any buzz or similar... I think my acoustic is good. Especially now after watching this. I did not knew how Martin sounds... That new 2019 can not be compared to my acoustic in any way. My is just better. Idk why but it is. Now i know why one old man offered me 2500 Euro in cash for it. I refused bc i did not knew what i have actually.. Thanks man, i learned a lot.

The 1942 one has a fatter (although not lacking treble) and more resonant sound in my opinion

BTW, signed up for your online course. Going through it slowly. Go stuck on the end of Module 2 in lesson 6. Last night had a breakthrough, started to sound the way it should. Really nice to have those moments. It's a very good course. I don't want to rush it as there is so much to learn. Great structure.

I think the 1st one sounded louder and richer. But what do I know I've been playing since the mid 70's. Now if I was in the room I'd hear it very differently I'm sure.

Aside from the vintage Gibson they have ;-) They probably got you to try the Atkin guitars as well, what do you think of them? My friend got one, they’re amazing considering they’re new guitars. Both sound simply amazing. I would happily play the 2019 Martin. That being said that 1942 is simply stunning. It's more alive if that makes sense. Every single frequency was more vibrant and rich sounding. I could tell you loved playing it because you played so much more dynamically. Great video as always.

Paul hope you’re well man. I enjoyed this video and the 1942 does sound much more open and responsive. I may be wrong but I think Martin Scalloped braces in D-28’s until 1945. I find a similar difference in the current D-28 and HD-28 guitars. Like I said I may be wrong but if I’m not then I feel that the scalloped bracing would account for a lot of these differences that you’re hearing and it would have been fairer to compare an HD-28 Instead of the D-28. Thing i noticed changes sound quality are strings. Who would know my antique 7 years old strings sound so bad, but since they are antique anyone wants to buy them? Starting at 10k $

Buy the cheaper one, then just wait about 70 years...it'll sound much better! Does make me wonder tho: What if you took the new guitar, then slowly baked it in a room in a desert, where it's super dry and about 120F. Would that wreck the guitar, or make it sound fantastic after a year or so?

I think it sounds better because of the aging of the wood. The 2019 will sound like that in a few decades.

What I worked out a long time ago is, if you want a vintage guitar, especially acoustic, you better factor in ‘total cost of ownership’. It will need the absolute right environmental humidity and temp-wise all the the time. It will need you to have a good knowledge of guitar adjusting, like proper luthier knowledge, or conversely the services of a top luthier to keep it on check. And unless you have a wildly popular RU-vid channel or are a serious performer, very few people will ever care when you’re playing it and you’ll be nervous any time the thing is sitting in a stand on stage and you aren’t up there. This is why I favor the modern custom shop guitars that are manually road worn.

1942 D-28 has rear shifted bracing and the 2019 has. Scalloped bracing. One has sitka spruce top, old one has. Adirondack top.plus Brazilian Rosewood is just amazing!!

I think this is maybe the first time I ever clearly hear a justifiable difference in the quality of sound between two high end instruments. That's actually kind of insane. I wish he had gone into what the damn difference is that makes it sound so good. Is it like those violins that for whatever reason sound better over time? Or is it that it was made differently? Or does the difference in the Brazilian rosewood versus the regular rosewood really make that much of a difference in the acoustics?! I WANT TO KNOW!
