Thank you so much for making a DAW video in regards to recording acoustic piano. It seems like all the videos on RU-vid have to do with guitar, drums, midi, vocals, bands, etc... I can hardly find anything about solo acoustic piano. I really really appreciate the time you took to make this video, and I learned a lot. Thank you.

You’re welcome! It’s always a process, and I think experimenting is valuable. Please let us know how it goes.

@@ImpliedMusic When I typed this comment, I had no idea about your other videos. I feel like I've found a gold mine of info since you also record similar piano etc... Enjoying your channel videos and subscribed. Thanks for replying 😊

Wow. That was a lot. I'm considering getting into recording my piano and various other instruments, never having done this in my prior 64 years this is a lot. Perhaps you could give some advice for equipment for the minimalist?

well, the one big thing is mic placement. pianos and rooms are different, and interact. most minimal set ups use condenser mics, and the placement i show works great for small rooms. i've had unexpected successes with USB mics poised right over the middle at the hammer line though... so many possibilities. ultimately, it's a "love the one you're with" situation. record today. and then again tomorrow. rinse and repeat.

Thank you very much! Very helpful video! The piece you recorded seems to already be played at quite a consistent volume / dynamic though. It'd be interesting to know how you would go about recording piano if you i.e. played Rachmaninoff or anything with fff and ppp, octaves and all of that immense dynamic range, which the piano is capable of. Would compression still be a good option for a different genre in a relatively untreated room?

yow. great question. i do a good amount of classical recording, and i always prefer to do it in a bigger room. close mic'ing, as i show here, doesn't capture the classical piano sound. Narhre Sol has an excellent discussion and examples of this on her channel. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bAoAMfY_XIw.html

...in a nutshell, for classical, if you HAVE to close at home, maybe very very light compression.
