Recording outdoors in the wind is a challenge no matter which type of microphone you choose. In this episode, let's look at the difference between using the foam wind cover that comes with most shotgun microphones versus using one of the zeppelin or blimp style wind covers.
In this case, we have a Rycote Modular Wind Cover Kit and a K-Tek KEG 150CCR carbon fiber boom pole on loan from B&H Photo to demonstrate.
If you’d like to improve your sound recording for film skills, please have a look at our Production Sound Fundamentals course over at school.learnlightandsound.com

I have a Sennheiser ME66 and for outdoors I use the newer Rycote Super Softie and found that it works very well as I live in a particularly windy area and you don't hear the low noise distortion of the wind in the recording, just hear the wind. I have used mine with a Tascam DR100 MKII and always record to it when doing outdoor recordings. I noticed that my recordings sounded clearer when recording someone's voice than some of the furry windjammers I have used, which can muffle the sound a little more I have noticed and even recording someones voice in a particuarly windy day, I was able to record it and hear the persons voice, along with the wind, without any distortion or the wind interfering much with the voice on the recording.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 9 лет назад
+DynamixWarePro Yes, a very good point. The furry covers definitely cut some of the higher frequency sound from making it to the microphone.

hi Curtis, interesting as ever thanks are you still using that technique for holding the boom pole? when i've done acting in tv shows i've seen the pros holding them using their shoulders to rest the pole on, like a yoke
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 лет назад
Yes, that's a good technique as well if the framing of the shot allows. I have found since then that because I am unusually tall, that I can generally use the yoke hold or lower my elbows to my side for longer shots. In the end. I'm an advocate of whatever method will result in a clean recording without dipping the mic or pole into the frame. :)

I was checking the rode blimp that also incorporates the shock sound system from Rycote I believe for a lesser price. What are the differences between both of these systems? Does that justify the price? My next shotgun mic will be a Rode NTG8. Thank you for the video.

Curtis you mention at the end you also tested just the dead cat over the foam, an still picked up some noise, how bad was it? Would you consider that audio still usable if having the mic close to the talent? Not for professional use but recording a web show outdoors

Hmm, that wind noise with the foam on is still pretty tame. With my microphone, pretty much any wind at all distorts it into this peaking, crackly mess. That's why I bought a Rode Blimp, and haven't looked back since.

+Stuart Tollison Yes, the Azden SGM250 does surprisingly well in the wind. I'm thinking the RODE Blimp is great value for money.
@StuartTollison
@StuartTollison 8 лет назад
+Curtis Judd It really is, I'd recommend it to anyone on a tighter budget. Also, have you ever used a VidPro XM-55 before? That is the microphone I have and use. It does the job well enough for me, except for the incredible tendency to distort. I would kinda like to see it compared with something like your Azden and a NTG1/2 because it is in the lower, entry-level field. For a hundred bucks, the kit may be an incredible steal. I just don't know because I don't have anything to compare it to.

Hi Curtis, I'm doing a shoot which will be on a boat at sea with a captain who's going to be telling some stories. Since it's probably going to be pretty windy I was wondering if you have any tips (from similar type of shoots perhaps). I was thinking of renting a Røde NTG3B with a Blimp (it also comes with a DeadWombat) along with a Zoom H6, that should do the job right? :)

Hey Curtis, I'm trying to buy very good quality equipment that will last me a while and I'm just wondering whether an audio recorder is more important than the quality of microphone. For example, would I be better off to buy a really good recorder and a NTG-2, or to buy a lower quality recorder and an NTG-3? Thanks for all your videos by the way I'm learning a lot!
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 8 лет назад
+Edvard Christie I'd invest first in good microphones because you'll be able to use them for years and years. An NTG3 and Tascam DR-60DmkII would be a great combination and the Tascam only costs about $175 these days: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TRoIMPHS91U.html

600 bucks for a boom pole? Damn. With the exception of the samson mic review (which I'm going to buy cause of your review) and some dr60 stuff you do on your channel, I sometimes think I'm watching the wrong channel. I wish I had that type of money to invest in this. Still great reviews and very practical tips for everyone on your channel. Thanks once again for useful content. BTW, my boom pole cost $40. Lol. I'll make it work until I can get a rode or something of that caliber.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 8 лет назад
Hi Joshua, totally understand that you have to use what you've got and using a $40 pole will probably make you stronger! :) I didn't own this pole - was just borrowing it from B&H at the time. Now that I'm doing more sound jobs I was able to buy it. So I would say only upgrade to things like this when you've got jobs paying for them.

Hi, Curtis! I'm buying my first Wind Cover and Shotgun Mount system and I'm having real doubts about it. For financial reasons, I need something that costs less than $300. I really like the idea of the Super Softie and the Universal Mount, it's cheap, light and it's Rycote, but I don't know if I'm gonna be in trouble someday in the lack of a blimp. On the other hand, there's the Rode Blimp... it's heavy, costs a little more (but it's cheap comparing to Rycote blimps), and it leaves too much space in the front of the microphone (I'm using a Neumann KMR 81 i), but never failed with the wind. What do you think? Cheers from Brazil.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 5 лет назад
Hi Felipe, This is the big tradeoff: Weight and size for effective wind protection. There is no question that the blimp/zeppelin style covers work better in faster wind. If I were only to buy one where I live (where the wind is quite frequent), I'd go for the RODE Blimp. However, if you only ever get very mild breezes, the Softie should be enough. Good luck!

Hi Chris, is there a rule to how close the tip of the shotgun mic should be to the end part of the blimp? Should it be to the edge of the screw off section or in it? Maybe an inch deep in side the blimp? Thanks in advance.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd Год назад
Ideally not right up close to the front - at least an inch from the front. You need that space for any moving air to diffuse.

Hello Curtis, my Rycote modular windshield kit 4 that I got for my Sennheiser MKH 8060 holds the mic on the lateral slots of the mic. Should I turn it around so the slots are north south rather than east west (if that makes sense). Surely it's not great that they are partially covered? There was some issue with the smaller kits when I enquired about them before buying this one with the MKH 8060. Thank you, L
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 3 года назад
Hi L *, I'm not sure I totally follow, but yes, best not to cover any of the slots in the interference tube. Don't be afraid to mount on of the Lyres to the XLR connector to give yourself more room for the front lyre.

Hey Curtis....what is this like compared to the Rode Blimp MKII...nice vide test in real wind.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 лет назад
Very, very similar. In terms of ability to manage wind, they both seem to do great. The RODE is a little bit heavier so I think the main thing you're getting with the Rycote is less weight. It isn't a lot but can make a difference if you're going to be booming a lot.

@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 лет назад
Yes, that'll do nicely. I like the Rycote Cyclone because it works just as well as the older model with a furry windjammer with just the 3D-Tex material and it is much quicker to open it up and reconfigure with a different mic. But of course you pay a bit more for that luxury. This is the one I use: bhpho.to/2kwDBw6
@BlackSteelBlackSteelPromotions
I am liking that one Curtis.....the Cyclone it the King of windsheilds, shame that there is not a few more reviews in Blimps/Windsheilds.....as i think that it's a very important part of a videographers kit.....

@curtisjudd 8 лет назад
+Sam Thomas If you or your talent will be seated for talking head and interview videos, I usually just use a $25 microphone boom stand like this: amzn.to/1PQI0DT There are definitely higher grade stands as well that are modular. Here's the Triad Orbit which you can add boom arms: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1060963-REG/triad_t2_standard_tripod.html/BI/19904/KBID/12941/kw/TRT2/DFF/d10-v2-t1-xTRT2 If you'll be hand booming, RODE has a decent entry level boom pole: amzn.to/1Id5dh1 And K-Tek makes pro-grade poles in both aluminum and carbon fiber. I use the K-Tek KEG150CCR: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/426794-REG/K_Tek_KEG_150CCR_KEG_150CCR_Avalon_Series_Graphite.html/BI/19904/KBID/12941/kw/KTKEG150CCR/DFF/d10-v2-t1-xKTKEG150CCR I would caution against the combination of the Zoom H4n and RODE NTG2. I have both of those and would recommend you instead of the Zoom look at the Tascam DR-60DmkII recorder. Here's why: The NTG2 needs quite a lot of gain from the recorder. The H4n does not have the quietest pre-amplifiers so when you crank the gain up to get enough amplification for the NTG2, you end up with quite a lot of noise. The Tascam is capable or providing more clean gain and also happens to be a little less expensive. You give up built-in microphones, but you'll be a lot less frustrated and capture cleaner recordings. Here's my review of the Tascam: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TRoIMPHS91U.html Best wishes!

+Curtis Judd Thanks a bunch! Quick question, are there any other recorders that do have built in mics that will give me as clean sound as the Tascam. @curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 8 лет назад
+Sam Thomas I did a little more testing after this review with the H6 and it is on par with the Tascam in terms of noise. The H5 has very similar pre-amps to the H6 so that'd be fine as well. It is the H4n you'll want to avoid.
