You’ve gotta admire professional boom operators for there skill and stamina, I couldn’t hold one aloft for long at my age 😂. A boom pole is a great bit of kit to have at hand for field recording I find. I’ve put a set of feet on my cheap Neewer from another monopod and it can at least be left standing with a guiding hand for short periods. It’s very useful 👍

Oh yes for sure. Incredible work and they deserve way more attention. So many people out there have no idea about sound and the work that’s involved to record the actors. I’m glad I have boom pole. Just came back from underwater recordings and used the boom as an extension.

You've inspired me to look at a Manfrotto Nanopole (probably non-carbon) instead of a boom pole :) Currently using the Manfrotto reversible monopod / selfie stick and it'd be nice for it to have legs.

Loving your videos! It's so nice to see/hear from another recordist/sound creator - your experiences are so familiar, so it's comforting to watch. Almost all of my mic rigs are stereo / 2ch rigs: 1 MS pair in a blimp, 1 pair of 8040s in ORTF, etc. One of the main reasons I haven't bought a boom pole is because most cabled poles have the standard 3-pin XLR connectors at either end. I knew it would take some modification to replace it with a coiled 5-pin cable and install a 5-pin male connector in the base. I can see that you BP4025 is on the end of your pole. Did you find a pole that is wired for 5-pin or did you craft it yourself? Cheers from LA! EDIT: I see you answered this question already in the comments. I'll look into the K-tek system 😊

Hi Matt, Yes Tino from K Tek created a 5 pin version. Make sure you reach out to him personally and ask if they can make it for you :)

Hi Libby und Marcel! I've just purchased my first field recorder and I'm starting to record sounds here in Brazil, thanks to your videos! Would love to now how is your post-production workflow, what do you do after you recorded the sounds (how do you edit/or prepare them to upload to your website). Maybe if more people want you could do a video about it? Anyway, love your videos and the podcast! Cheers

Thanks Marcel for the advice and for being so humble. Maybe #KTek will read my message when crossing it or maybe you can pass it on to them ^^ • It will be good if K-Tek produces a boom that is a mix of a Boom and a Stand. Or there is some sort of removable tripod that can be set up in the middle of the last end of the Boom (for example) to become a stand when needed. • Another thing: having a Backpack designed especially for Sound designers can be useful. The bags used are above all designed for photographers/videographers. Sound designers subsequently tried to adapt to hang the pole, slide their recorder, etc. It's true that K-Tek produced some good bags, but it's intended to carry a very special mixer (even for the large backpack). In addition, these bags don't allow us to have, at the same time, a camera for example and a lot of audio equipment varied between microphones, cables, audio recorders. I will be delighted if they will think about these proposals (and if it will be well studied to be useful and beneficial) Thank you 😊

Hi Ahmed! I just forwarded your message to K-Tek and I'm sure Tino will respond to it. Your first idea, isn't it something similar to the light stand I use? I can remove the pole from the stand and use it kind like a boom but that is not really professional. Hmm, a good feature to an existing boom pole could be 3 leg stand where you could attach any boom to make it a stand. Good idea. About bag. Yes I can hear you with that and I talked with Tino about it already. To be honest I already thought about it myself creating a sound recordist bag and starting a kickstarter campaign. I believe the demand on such bag is higher as we might think.

@@FreeToUseSounds Thank you!🕊️ Yes, it's as you explained and even showed from your experience. A Stand but which will be more suited to this kind of use since it will be less noisy and in addition, the fact that the pole can turn into a stand can be practical during shooting so as not to worry about where to place the pole ( we have to look for a corner of the wall or have a special cart). So your experience is a very useful example to visualize the need. Same with the bag ... And coming from a person with a real experience, the result could be well thought out. Besides, it encourages me to test the product... or even participate in it 😊

Hi Ahmed, Thank you for your comment. The idea of a stand of some sort for a boompole, easy to handle and lightweight enough to carry around, is not totally new, yet still a great idea! We have been thinking to develop something like that. But so far we have had not the proper resources in time and labor to get that started. I sure hope by next year we will create something great like that. However, we are a small family business, and due to the "lovely" pandemic, we work with an even smaller staff. Which does not make things necessarily easier. But rest assured, we keep bringing up new cool products as we go along. The Stingray BackPack (KSBP1) does exist already: ktekpro.com/product-category/stingray-bags/audio-backpack/ Currently available at a great special!! Don't miss the opportunity! I hope I was able to help you. Thanks again for your comment, always appreciated. Please stay safe! Tino (K-Tek, Head of Sales)

A FieldReordist, having that job title and any experience monitoring sound and watching video composition, would already know whether or not a boompole is needed, right?
@FreeToUseSounds
@FreeToUseSounds 3 года назад
Hi Ken. A field recordist isn't necessary the person who is "monitoring sound and watching video composition". There is a difference between hired location sound recordist's, boom operators working on set for projects and the field recordist who just loves spending time in nature recording ambience. I made this video for the people out there who don't know if they should buy a boom pole or not. Just sharing my thoughts with the world. :)

Great review. Boom poles hm... Expensive thing... So, If the boom pole is needed I will use my (photo)monopod adapted or just a wooden stick and some gaffer - outside boom pole job it can serve as a traveler walking stick & wild dogs intimidate accessory ;)

You do amazing work! You've inspired me to buy a ton of gear to explore the world of sound - but I'm having trouble finding a 5-pin cable to replace the default 3-pin cable inside the K-Tek KP6CCR Mighty Boom Pole. Which cables/accessories did you use to swap this out?
@FreeToUseSounds
@FreeToUseSounds 3 года назад
Hi Rina! If you reach out to Tino from Ktek, they can make you a cable but can you exchange the unit at the bottom of your boom? I have the Pro Klassik and this is one system made for stereo. What microphone are you using? If you have the AT 4025 the cable is already with in the box. Edit: I see you the same pole. If you have the exchangeable module on the bottom, you need to contact Ktek. They have a 5 pin module with cables. Tell Tino or Brenda hello from Marcel.

Hello again Marcel! Is there anything special about your replacement 5-pin cable for your KTEK pole I should know about? I had the folks over there make me one (5pin replacement) and it does not work once I connect my 5pin to dual 3pin for stereo mic . Pretty bummed 🙁 I’d appreciate any insight here so I can relay to them 🙏🏻🙏🏻

@@imagesbyrina Hi Rina. Sorry to hear that but can you explain me what doesn't work? Aren't you getting sound? Also do you have a 5 pin XLR cable inside the boom pole?

Maybe an odd question Marcel, but do you get embarrassed or anxious when recording in public? It feels a strange thing to be walking around pointing a shotgun mic at stuff and I feel very self conscious of this strange hobby when I'm on my own in public places. Will that feeling intensify if I add more equipment like a boompole or does it maybe get easier because it becomes more obvious what I'm doing? I was trying to mic up a squeaky swing in a playground of kids last weekend with shotgun mic and contact mic and I felt very uncomfortable, even though I was there with my own kid - do I just need to get over it?!

Hi Mike, I recorded such sounds in Croatia with the Geofon and a bunch of people around. In General I never feel that but it’s also a learning curve. The more you record the better it gets. I think if people ask and you k is the reason why you record these sounds it not only makes sense to you but also to the people.
