hello, Thank you for this video its indeed very helpful. In 2017 after the BTC fork to BCH, i mistaken sent 0.43 btc to a Bittrex BCH exchange. They didnt help me to recover the fund because it wasnt worth up to 5000 USD at a time. your video talked about opposite of what I did... BTC to BCH. and I do not have the private key to the BCH wallet since its exchange wallet. If am able to get my BCH private key from bittrex, will this process work in reverse? Please i will appreciate any advise. The fund is still sitting there from 2017

Can I recover funds from edge wallet?
@chaintuts
@chaintuts 2 года назад
It's possible, I believe Edge is a non-custodial wallet. Looks like they use a slightly different key solution than traditional seed phrases, so you'd have to figure out how to export the private keys. It also depends if you sent to a legacy 1 Bitcoin address or a 3 (segwit) address. If it's segwit, recovery is not possible at this time due to incompatibility with Bitcoin Cash.

Unfortunately you are out of luck. CashApp is custodial and no one at CashApp has direct access to private keys. It also uses BTC segwit addresses which would further complicate recovery even if it was your own wallet. Those coins are effectively unrecoverable. In the future, I recommend always double-triple checking addresses for correctness. Cryptocurrency transactions are irreversible.

There is no way to recover the coins in this case - the money is lost. Binance is a custodial exchange - they don't give users access to the private keys and they generally don't help people recover coins sent to the wrong address. This is for security reasons, as no individual support agent would have access to the keys needed. I am sorry I cannot help you recover your lost coins, but I hope you have a good day otherwise and learn from this experience.

Josh, your video is so helpful.. my question is when you are trying to find your transaction number when you are in the mnemonic code generator and you can’t find your number? You said “play around with the number,” what does this mean? I have a trezor so I found they use BIP44... I am looking for a BCH “q” number... do I just keep asking for more numbers until I find it? (1,000 of numbers?) or can I do a search somehow? Thank you
@chaintuts
@chaintuts 3 года назад
Hi Rebecca - a few things to try her: 1) Yes, you can request more addresses from the table - although unless you've done a lot of transactions that usually is not the answer 2) You may have to change the currency - if you sent to a BTC address make sure you have BTC selected, as the derivation paths for BTC/BCH are different - resulting in different addresses 3) If you are seeing a bunch of addresses starting in 1 instead of q, you can convert the address using a cashaddr tool like the one at cashaddr.org or another site that does conversions
@rebeccalarson9099

I got through all the steps and electron cash app showed no transactions history even though I identified my private key that came from a “3” number. I emailed you on your site

Hi Rebecca - Bitcoin Cash does not support most 3 address (BTC segwit addresses). BTC segwit address recoveries can only be done with the help of a miner. Always double, triple check addresses in the future as some mistakes are not reversible.

Firstly thank you for the tutorial. 👍 Secondly, I have followed your tutorial and wanted to ask what would be a cause for the electron cash wallet show a balance as 0 BCH after importing the private keys?
@chaintuts
@chaintuts Год назад
I would double check and make sure you have the right keys. Usually that means you're importing the wrong private key or seed phrase for the wallet. For example, you've accidentally imported a key from the sending wallet, not the receiving wallet. For example if you sent from Exodus to Ledger, you have to have the Ledger seed/keys for this to work. A lot of people mistakenly grab the Exodus seed but it won't help at all in that case.
@user-undefined600
@user-undefined600 Год назад
@@chaintuts Thank you for taking time to respond. For context: I sent BCH from an exchange to my ledgers BTC account roughly 1 year ago and only noticed the mistake a few days ago. Actions: opened BIP39, input the ledger 24 word seed phrase, changed from BIP44 to BIP89 as per the ledgers BTC address, located the corresponding transaction and BTC wallet address, copied the private keys from BIP39 into the Electroncash app exactly as shown in your video. Once complete the electroncash account shows a zero balance against that private key. Have I missed something?
@chaintuts
@chaintuts Год назад
Hrm, I'm really not sure about that one. One next step you might try is to import that key into a different wallet that takes private keys such as Coinomi. What's the address start with? 1, 3, or bc1?
@user-undefined600
@user-undefined600 Год назад
@@chaintuts it is a BC1 address.
@chaintuts
@chaintuts Год назад
Unfortunately in that case, you probably can't recover. Bitcoin Cash (BCH) doesn't have compatibility with native segwit addresses (bc1) or segwit addresses (3). 3 addresses are still considered "valid" by the BCH network because they are used for multisignature addresses, which are different "under the hood" than segwit. I'm not sure why sending to a bc1 address even worked on the BCH network. But either way, sadly, there's not currently a way to recover coins sent to segwit addresses on BCH.

Is it possible to complete this if you sent the BCH to a BTC adress on coinbase? I've no access to private key, and coinbase not being overly helpful. Any suggestions?
@chaintuts
@chaintuts 3 года назад
Unfortunately in that case, you're out of luck and that money is gone permanently. 2 reasons - first, no one at CB individually has access to the private keys. It would be a security nightmare if any person could get the keys to work a manual recovery. Second, Coinbase uses BTC segwit addresses. While they are valid addresses on BCH, the network doesn't support segwit and there's a whole other set of complications with segwit recovery (requiring the help of a miner). Sorry this happened, but you'll have to take the loss :(

Great question, Tony. I didn't cover it in the video, but no it is NOT possible to recover using this method if you sent to a BTC segwit address. BCH doesn't support segwit, so it doesn't work. The BCH developers did add something to the protocol that allows miners to recover funds sent to segwit addresses (I don't know exactly how this works yet), but individual user's can't recover funds using what I've laid out here. Hope that helps.

Hi Gabbz, I'm really glad to hear this was helpful! To answer your question, yes that is normal. If you look at the actual amount sent in bitcoin (the unit) it should be about the same. The exchange rate from USD to Bitcoin fluctuates a lot. Another reason it could be less is also due to transaction fees. When you send a Bitcoin transaction, you pay a fee to the network for processing. On Bitcoin BTC, the fees can be quite high at times due to network congestion.

I sent bitcoin to bitcoin cash wallet by accident is there any solutions?
@chaintuts
@chaintuts Год назад
Hi LK, yes this should work in reverse, especially since BTC supports legacy 1 addresses that BCH uses. In order to recover, you must have the private key/seed for the *receiving* wallet, not the sender. So if you sent from Coinbase Wallet to Exodus (etc.) that has a seed, you can try these steps. If you sent to an exchange wallet, unfortunately you're out of luck. I do some consulting for possible cases for a fee. You can use my contact form here if you'd like to discuss: chaintuts.com/private-tutoring-consulting/index.html

bitcoin send my Btc to on invalid address. Can you help me to recover my money?
@chaintuts
@chaintuts 3 года назад
What do you mean an invalid address? If the address wasn't a valid BTC address, the transaction wouldn't be broadcast. It must have been valid, but the *wrong* address. In that case, the question is - do you have the seed phrase for the wallet you got the address from (the address you sent the coins to)? If you do, I *may* be able to help. If it's some wallet that doesn't give you a key, there's nothing myself or anyone else can do - the money is gone. If you think you have the seed for the address you sent the coins to, you can reach me via this contact form. I need as many details as possible - the address you sent to, the name of the wallet, and if you have the seed phrase for the wallet (do not send the seed though). Please be detailed, I don't have time for recovery cases that require a significant amount of back-and-forth questions and answers to be honest. chaintuts.com/private-tutoring-consulting/

Unfortunately, no. There's no way to brute-force recover your keys if you've lost the 12-24 word passphrase. If you have the wallet file and just forgot the password, there are cases where the password is recoverable but it's very, very difficult and time consuming to do.

Probably not. In most cases it isn't possible. The only potential recovery scenario is if you sent the coins to the wrong address in your own wallet you have a seed phrase/private key for. If it's BCH to BTC, it has to be a 1 address NOT a 3 address. If you lost coins to a scammer or sent to an exchange, the money is permanently lost.

Correct, there is no way to recover coins sent to a scammer. The only slightly-possible thing is getting the police involved. But there's no technical means of reversing crypto transactions, so sending coins to a scammer means the money is gone forever.

Coinbase will give you a transaction ID that you can check on a block explorer. Make sure the transaction was actually confirmed on the network first and go from there. Next step would be to contact the receiving wallet's support (make sure you use their official channels, and never give seed phrase or 2fa codes to someone claiming to be support as scammers will steal coins this way).
