I keep seeing these forgotten sunken Lake Powell and Lake Mead boats in pictures on the news and stuff like that, and I kept thinking "I'm sure the hulls are still fixable. Someone should drag these boats home and resurrect them." You guys are actually doing it. Totally awesome.

Hunter deserves a badge of courage! Not sure what the dirt removal did, the rooster tail of dirt Paul was shooting in 2 wheel drive refilled the boat. You guys are awsome. It was probably an insurance job. If your boat sinks, you would never just leave it. Because of the oil and fuel in the engine, The state department of natural resources would never let you just leave it. It's a pollution hazard and a navigation hazard. The likely scenario is, it was taken out and intentionally sunk. It was reported stolen and the insurance was collected on it.

@@andrewmcgibbon9785 If it had been blown away from mooring during a monsoon and sank, nobody would have known where to begin searching the bottom of the entirety of Lake Powell. It could be as simple as being overloaded by a hundred pounds and swamped the transom. If there was no insurance, the cost of recovery from 100' below, even with a known location, would have been outrageous. Either way it would be a write-off. What do you see that makes you automatically assume foul play by the legal owner?

Michelle was right to be worried- Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) is a severe, sometimes fatal, respiratory disease in humans caused by infection with hantaviruses. Anyone who comes into contact with rodents that carry hantaviruses is at risk of HPS.

After being under water for so long, it might be smart to open up the fiberglass stringers, inspect and close and reinforce them - a bunch knowing the fab rats.

The stringers are made of wood and partially covered in fiberglass in all that I've seen like this. These appear to be wood as well.

@@jjohnson2553 agreed, every one we opened up has been built pretty much the same. Also need to check the balsa or whatever core material they used for the decks and floor. Dad is a boat carpenter for a living so have done stuff like this a few times.

Good idea in most of the fiberglass boats I've rebuilt the stringers are wood under a couple layers of roving chopped mat roving chopped mat then a couple layers of glass cloth.

Wood/balsa cores do rot more often than not. I would have that hull inspected by a professional before spending any money on it.

Any video with live rats roaming around the set are priceless! Well done recovery. I would not put too much value and confidence into the integrity of that "boat" fiber glass to be on a lake at high speed. Make sure you wear life jackets when you put it back on the water it may end up at the bottom of a lake againin no-time.

I love it. When I saw that pump on the backside, I thought it looked a lot like the pump and engine on my SportMaster. It had a Jacuzzi pump with an Olds 455. The boat had sunk from negligence and I got it for almost nothing. I replaced the pump bearings and reshimmed. Replace the crank and bearings because of corrosion. After that, it was a VERY GOOD ride. We did a lot of skiing and a lot of fishing with that boat. I hope you have as much fun rebuilding yours as I did mine.

My uncle made a pontoon boat, and filled the aluminum pontoons with expanding foam, and he used to run it up on sans bars, and people would tell him that it would sink after that, not knowing he had done that. He also never put the plugs in it, and everyone "knew" it would sink.

I remember Lake Powell being low like that in the 1960's when it was still filling up. Looking down from the dam the water was way down there. Let's hope that Mother Nature will fill it back up again. I hope to see the boat when I'm down there for New Years.

My brother had a boat similar to this one, had it tied up at a dock and a storm blew in overnight. When he came out the next morning he saw life jackets and seat cushions floating around, he thought someone was not going to be happy about loosing stuff out of their boats. Got to where his boat was tied up only to find just the front tip of his boat sticking up out of the water.

I have an idea on how the boat went down. I used to live in AZ, I had a Hallett Jet Boat with a Berkeley pump, and my friends all had jet boats too. One day, we were out on the lake, being idiots (you could drink and boat back then in the 90's) and my buddy in his jet boat tried to do a "James Bond turn-around" basically a 360, which he had done many times before. However, this time, the boat augered in, ejected him and his buddy, went down stern-first, bobbed in the water for a minute or 2 because there was an air pocket in the closed bow. We immediately devised a recovery plan, and at that moment the bow cap split open from the hull, made a farting noise as the air escaped and it immediately sank. Ah, the good ol days!

There were a few boats like this on the lake where my folks had a cabin here in northern Minnesota. They were popular starting in the late 70’s, had big V-8’s with lots of chrome, and a Berkeley jet drive. They were fun to watch and very fast.

I had a Sleekcraft, with a 455 Olds and a Jucuzzi jet. The motors were bought as a crate motor from the manufacturer and installed by the builder. The motor in mine was referred to by Olds as a, marine / irrigation motor. But, like you’re saying, many were replaced or sourced from other places. For as low as they sat, it was real easy to get water breaking over the transom on stops, and I wonder if that ain’t what sunk this one?

I don't know which looks worse, Lake Powell or Lake Mead. Colorado would have to have ten inches of rain daily for a year to full both lakes. This is very bad. We went through a five year dry spell in Texas a few years ago. Our lakes never looked that bad. My wife said Lake Ray Hubbard would never have full pool any more. In one spring season, back over the spillway. Hopeful it will happen there soon. I will pray for you guys.

Hey, y'all, Thank you for taking the effort to clean the area around the boat. Showing it as being just part of what you normally do is a strong example for others to follow suit. This is a great video for going on an adventure, too. It makes me wanna do more 4-wheeling! My guess on the tape is something like ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) from the late 70's or maybe some old school country. Also, I hope to hear what the original owners can share about the boat's demise. Hey, maybe that's a good name for it: Demise, or Powell's Demise. Whatdya think?

I’ve seen many times jet boats that are driven by people who don’t know how jet boats should be driven you just don’t stop real quick, the back will fill up with water and sink that model I’ve seen on Shasta lake many times go under great jet boat you will enjoy it very much have fun

That was my thought. I think people are trying too hard to come up with creative scenarios. Stopping fast in a low-slung boat and getting swamped by the wake is way too easy and I imagine it's pretty common.
