Hi Mihal, I broke my ankle 10 months ago mountain biking and it feels the best now when I mountain bike! I think walking etc makes it worse and have been thinking about plate/screw removal and knowing I still have staples in my knee from PTL tear, it still hurts occasionally...from walking too much, go figure. Dang, sometimes I just think these bodies have too many sensors in them like the new cars....and they are always going off. No answers here, just know that some pain is our body's way of letting us know we are ALIVE!

Hey there fellow ankle breaker. I notice your video is 5 years old, so how is your ankle doing 9.5 years after the fracture? I'm at the 8 month stage and most of the time it's fine, but still get dull aches, sometimes even after doing very little activity. My biggest concern is developing post traumatic arthritis, so you think this has been a factor for you?

Hi, I read your comment, which put you now at 13 months out. I’m a little over 4 months out. I had a displaced trimaleolar fracture with ORIF. I have the same concern, as far as traumatic arthritis goes. I’m a runner, and am not back to running, but if I can ever get back to running, my biggest concern is traumatic arthritis (with or without running) . Are you a drummer? Have you been able to get back to drumming as normal and how are you doing at 13?months? Best wishes to you !

Hiya, yeah ankle is doing pretty good now at 13 months. The break area is completely smoothed out and no noticeable bump. I was lucky enough to not require surgery so no hardware etc. I have close to full mobility, however I notice plantar flexion is reduced. If I sit on my knees and stretch front of ankle it feels tight and limited. No doubt I could fix this with physio but too busy and lazy. Right foot working great in the bass drum. I don't really run much but I can with no issue. Depending on your age, I'd recommend running for exercise but maybe don't overdo it. I read the damage to the cartilage inside the joint will make itself known years later.

Broke my ankle three ago. Then I kept getting a sore which wouldn’t heal where a screw was. Went to several doctor said it was ok. Started losing feelings in toes from nerve damage and foot would swell. Found a good doctor who said screw loose needed being removed. Took one plate out and doing better. Several screws loose. Removing was a lot easier. Foot feels better and get staples out in a couple days. Hoping foot back to normal. Being very careful.

Thanks for sharing this. I broke my tibia, fibula and a lot of bones in my foot 3 years ago. Still have very limited dorsiflexion, much pain and swelling. Not willing to accept this as a chronic condition.

ugh, Niel I'm so sorry. Have you tried massage? And ice baths? Both help with pain, range of motion and swelling.

Im 27 years old and I broke my tibia and fibula 3 and half months ago. I got most of my range back through physical therapy though I still struggle pushing off my toes at the end of a step, messing up my balance. I don't have much issue walking up stairs but going down stairs is still hard. Had plates and screws put in for surgery. And I also have the popping feeling when I walk. Hoping to run and jump in the next 8 months.

You may want to try getting a rebounder - I just made a new video update and mentioned it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6rF_pswE0_k.html

It has become my "invisible" limitation. I used to wear heals when I worked and after the fracture in 2001, the fysio therapist at the hospital told me to wear sneakers or walking shoes with laces.

What kind of ankle fracture was it? Did you post up x-rays somewhere? I got surgery 18 days ago, and then had that one undone 2 days ago and redone. So metal out, new adjustments to positioning(which was harder because new bone had grown in the way of proper positioning) new metal went in and my bedbound phase starts at square one again. I guess maybe the articulate surface in your case might not have been repositioned evenly or maybe you weren't able to regenerate cartilage as well or maybe the fibula isn't properly positioned compared to the tibia because of that part of the tibia being malreduced(inaccurately repositioned). I don't know, I'm just guessing. I read and learned a lot about this sort of thing the last weeks and it's a good thing I did or I wouldn't have gone for a second opinion and my chances of being able to do stuff like go jogging in future for miles without pain would have been next to nothing. I'll get my xrays tomorrow and I hope they got it right this time. For now I'm trying to bite through the pain and stay positive while I study for an important exam in two days.

@@mihal.freinquel I would consider getting some additional opinions if you haven't already. My first orthopedist left my foot in a state that gave me almost certainty of significant complications down the road. If I hadn't have been the devils advocate and studied about it I would have left it but luckily I managed to get corrective surgery albeit a bit late. Turns out it's quite common for surgeons to place bone fragments back inaccurately. Depending on the break that can have lasting detrimental effect. I guess it might be too late to fix things for you but I don't know. If you do get another opinion, get the best qualified person you can find, check out their LinkedIn to see if they have multiple degrees and publications to make sure. Best of luck Mihal, it made me sad to hear you speak of recurring pain.

@@Russellbeta Thank you for the unsolicited advice. My surgeon was amazing and I didn't have any floating bone fragments - my main issue is related to tight muscles and fascia. Best of luck to you!

Hello, I just broke my ankle two weeks ago, I had surgery on 9/6/20 and I’m still in a lot of pain. Do you think that’s normal to still have so much pain after two weeks?
@Russellbeta
@Russellbeta 4 года назад
@@taylormade4393 Hey Taylor, I'm not a doctor but I think that it's complicated and depends on your specific injury. I've noticed that on RU-vid people expect to see similar results compared to others with ankle fractures but there's huge differences between the ankle fractures and how they were treated. Some people get a near complete recovery, others limp for the rest of their lives or worse. Personally I still had a lot of pain two weeks after surgery. I took lots of painkillers to compensate but it still hurt. My nurse told me to keep taking the painkillers when it hurt because the pain can cause high blood pressure, adrenaline and higher heart rates. The most painful moments for me were when the foot was swelling beyond what would fit inside the cast and let me tell you I was in HEAPS of pain when that happened. Initially I had an open cast which I could stretch further to take the pressure off and I've been keeping my foot elevated with icepacks on it to help with swelling too. Best of luck dude, and try to be patient and be sure to check your X-Rays to see if they look right. I'm over a month after my second operation now and it still hurts but not so much that I need to take painkillers all the time. I still take them sometimes though. Also I'm able to walk in my cast now which hurts but it's only to the bathroom and back and then I have to elevate my foot again with ice to minimize the swelling. The bone hasn't healed enough to support my weight yet but the metal takes most of the load.

I broke my ankle 6 months ago... and the pain is 70% of the time unbearable.... My surgeon gave me the option today to remove the metal and I have no idea if I will! I got nerve damage due to my ORIF (1 plate and seven screws), and arthritis is starting in my ankle and knee... Anyway watching your videos is helping me slowly make my decision as to whether or not I'll go with it... So thank you for helping out all of us ankle breakers !! ;P

Have you gone back to playing sports? Before my break I was very very active, and I enjoyed a lot of sports. Anyone else have any tips? or can share their experiences? I never had any ankle problems before my break. I'm really scared, anxious and depressed.... I don't know what to do. I'm terrified of walking although I probably won't walk for another month.

Taylor Made everyone’s recovery is different, so don’t think that you’re not recovering in the “right way”. I still have some extreme discomfort with a lot of “pins and needles” in my foot. I still take pain meds and when I shower and have it dangle down, it starts hurting a bit. If you’re worried, just ask your doctor/nurse and ask them to try to ease your worries a bit. & yes! I have a Facebook, it’s just my full name and the profile picture is me in a burgundy dress looking at my husband (he has a beard if that helps lol). :)
