There is something joyous about having something incredibly ridiculous. I have a dress whose fabric is covered in floral bouquets…but upon close inspection the bouquets have flowers from vastly different growing zones (so roses and birds of paradise and violets etc) cactus, pine cones, and fruit…all together on a teal background. It is glorious. Makes me so happy.
Thank you for exploring this area. Hat fabrication is definitely an art. By the way, I’d love to visit the Slapdash Hat Studio. I think it’s next door to the Whizbang Dress Shop.
I'm always on the lookout for these type of tilt hats at antique stores and can hardly ever find them. Thank you so much for the video. I might buy some supplies to try making one myself.
Maybe if you posted alone you could find people willing to meet up for it? Dont know what kind of area you live in. Sadly I think my towns to small to manage.
I'm now incredibly tempted to make myself a "bewitching flower disk" but with roses and either little bat ear shapes for the loops, or little batwing shapes for the loops
You have no idea how grateful I am for the "silly" people on the internet! And yes, I would love to have tea with you, if you don't mind my Nina Hagen revival hairdo :)
Bianca and her happy hats are always pure sunshine! The second hat is my favourite, I love how tall and colourful it is! Also, that was very nice of someone to crochet the white clutch for you. They did a great job!
Love the feather hat!!! Please wear on your birthday!!! ♥️♥️♥️💐💐💐. My sister does Estate Sales in Houston. I will ask her to look for vintage veil fabrics for you in some of her homes.
I think I like the flower hat the most on you. It's both cheery and accessable. It reminds me of a Sunday's best hat. It also goes better with your clothing.
Yuuuuup i need this. Ive found since quarantine that i might as well go all out because if im only going out once a week i might as well dressed for the occasion....or dress for tuesdays working from home just for me.
These are all so delightfully frivolous, love it! One can never go too far with fanciful hats. The floral one with the matching set of corsage was probably my favorite, but the fluffy feathered one is a close second.
your comment : " i thought it was too much. no no. it was not ENOUGH!" definitely elicited an auditory chuckle from me. was there such a thing as too much? or enough? in that time period?
As someone who considers herself a 'hobbie milliner' this was an absolute joy to watch 😍 So fantastical, frivolous and very fetching - I'm in love ♥ It might also make for an eggcellent Easter bonnet project for all lovers of vintage style millinery. I am dying to do the online course working with Swiss rancello braid, perfect for creating those gorgeous platter/saucer hats in EVERY COLOUR!!!
Love this! So fun to watch you do these projects!! The whacky hat reminds me of 2 episodes of I Love Lucy...One, in season 3, I think, where Lucy has been buying too many hats, so she makes a bet with Ricky that he will lose his temper before she will buy a new hat, then spends the episode trying to make him lose his temper. And the other, from season 5, where Lucy wants a fancy Parisian dress while in Paris. Ricky thinks the fashions are ridiculous, so he wraps up a feed sack as a dress and a horse feed bag as a hat to give to Lucy. She falls for it, thinking it's original Parisian fashion, and proudly walks down the street wearing it. :) :)
😂 I actually have some of my great great grandmother's aprons which she made using old feed sacks and a every day work dress my grandmother believes was also harvested from old feed bags. It was farm life so if it was serviceable fabric, it was gonna be used. Makes me wonder if the I Love Lucy writers had family who were similarly thrifty to inspire them.
@@khaxjc1 Wow, that's cool that you have those items of your grandmother's! I am no expert, but I believe it was more common, in the 30s/Depression era, to turn feed sacks into wearable garments. Like you said, not wasting was super important to people. Also, there is the famous Marilyn Monroe photos of her wearing a potato/feed sack from 1951 (with a few different stories behind it...check it out, it's a fun, interesting old Hollywood/fashion moment).
Absolutely love these over the top hats! Also like seeing how one can make such hats with more accessible supplies. It makes the idea of attempting to recreate vintages hats myself slightly less daunting.
I'm with many others and like the third one the best but all three are fabulous in a ridiculous way. I know it would bring a smile to my face to see someone wearing such a hat.
Yes! I am so excited about this video! I feel like something Burton/goth whimsy would be awesome in your wardrobe. A toy tophat of some sort? Exaggerated trimmings in acid green? 🤔 Will edit once I've watched the whole video lol Oh my gosh! My 1940s hat is one of these odd floral things! Mine is pink roses with black grosgrain and chartreuse velvet ribbons. I haven't worn it yet as I don't have an appropriately dramatic 40s dress to match...Going on my sewing shortlist Also I feel like ridiculous hat teas is a genre of party that needs to exist 🤔 I would absolutely attend lol I love both of the revamps. The fur is very fun but I think my favorite is hat 3. Getting a matching brooch definitely sways me though. Beautiful as always
My grandmother attended a "trim your own hat" party. The host had gotten a lot of cheap or thrifted hats of all sorts and a collection or ribbon, flowers, fabric paint, and so on. When people arrived they had to go to the hat station and trim their hat and then they all wore them for the night while they ate and talked. By all accounts everyone had a good time since their was no expectation. If you wanted to go all out making some easter bonnet type fun everyone was happy to watch and laugh and compliment your efforts. If you wanted to grab a baseball cap, paint your name, and leave it at that, that was fine too. People apparently liked these ones made out of the foam sheeting used in alot of kids crafts? Apparently she got them at the craft store and they came in all kinds of fun types from top hats to cowboy hats and beyond. The shapes made them fun but because they were just foam people werent worried with messing them up.
Frothy Pouf! I love it. I'm a very understated, don't look at me, kind of person...but I LOVE Fascinators...they're so cute and silly and dramatic. I'm not a hat person (I just have too much hair to wrangle) but if I was required to wear something on my head, I'd go for one of these.
I would love to have a frilly flowery swim cap to add to my hat collection. Like you, I have many (some would say too many) hats. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and creativity with us!
Pinterest has some really imaginative easter hat ideas. We're talking literal nests of easter chicks and rabbits. There's a fun pic of Donna Reed in one.
Somehow I made it through this video without the song Easter Bonnet and all the hates from Easter Parade coming to mind but now I have the reel playing in my head. I thank you kindly for it as it has found memories attached.
I've looked for this for sooo long! In playing dress up as a little girl in the 1950's I loved a flat, bright blue feather hat that I believe had belonged to my Aunt Betty. It had the velvet cord with "spring" that held it on the head. Thank you for sharing this. ☮️💞🙏
I would love to see a saucer hat! PS I’d also love to see you working with hat blocks. I’ve been using random crockery from around my house, I’d appreciate the chance to see you work with a block :)
Exactly what I was thinking! 😄 I'd even go as far as to maybe add a tiny beaded butterfly to the back of the hat, near where the stems gather together...? The colour combos are just great, and combining the hat & corsage together the plain black dress looks awesome!
I absolutely adore all of these and need to make them all!! I would definitely wear them out. No one wears hats anyway so I might as well be as ultra as possible! ❤️
I would love to see you make a wide brim... what, circa 1886 hat? At the time when women slapped a literal ENTIRE taxidermied bird right on top? Literally amazing. 10/10 recommend.
I really really really hope that you wear these hat out!! I would totally go to tea with you...but only if a hat is worn because after all, extra is extraordinary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh and I too love a good clutch. BTW I have been stalking all your vlogs for the past couple of months thoroughly enjoying your style and methods. I would love to have a long chat with you about sewing and vintage styles. I learnt to sew from my nana when I was 5 years old and haven't stopped ( I turned 50 on 9/9). She used to make all her clothes including suits and hats in the 1940's. I have many of her patterns. She encouraged my finding of my personal style and just make what I wanted to wear. So now I sew for my family, friends and myself. I seriously see you as a great friend and companion in my sewing life. Lots of love and encouragement from Australia xxxxxxxxx
Extra ridiculous hats? THIS IS PERFECT CONTENT FOR ME! Those hats are marvelous, and they suit you super well! I feel very inspired to try millinery myself...!
I really hope you work up the courage to go out wearing these - they're fab! You've inspired me to get my hat blocks out of the attic and have a go at hat making again!
The first hat reminded me of something my Granny had. The base was bigger but it had both feathers and flowers on it. I posted this to my Gothic DIY group as it would be appreciated their. I've never seen the wire hoop to keep hats on before but then my experiences and knowledge of hats is limited. I always assumed that a comb seen in is what kept the hat on as that is what I've seen before but then that was the 80s. I've seen a lot of thin elastic bands to keep hats on as well. I've got an idea for a WW2 widow's hat from watching this. My ideas take anywheres from one day to ten years before being made. I do things as I feel its all been thought out and as the mood coincides with my art. The next hat I will make will be a black small stove pipe hat with a veil that ends up in a bow and long tails in the back. This just might be something to get me started on my Black Dahlia look....
Oh your yellow flower hat reminds me on a hat my mum used to wear . I always thought she looked like a movie star. Thank u for evoking such joyful memories
I really enjoyed this....I am gathering my millinery items to make a headpiece for a wedding....my velvet leaves should arrive tomorrow....and my wire, and stiffening spray...I have vintage appliques that need some firming up.....I can not wait for more hat making!!
Hi, I love the hats and seemingly a fairly easy thing to do, if you have strongfingers. I think the second one with the floofy feathers could do with a little extra something, maybe a little height. You can go so mad decorating even a simple straw hat. I loaned mine to my niece for her horse to practice taking and giving it back. He did it really well, I got it back in the 💩. Lesson learned never have your straw hat in the car when you go to train horses. I'm glad the only decorations were a head scarf it came from the charity shop and I had removed it before the horse got his large teeth on it. Good fun to watch. This year's one is going nowhere near the stable and you have given me great ideas. Love and best wishes Heather xx
Very interesting Bianca. Honestly, I had already wondered how these exaggerated - but very beautiful - hats were perched on top of the ladies' heads. The “Bewitching Flower Disc” hat is beautiful and the feathered hat too; the latter a bit exaggerated for me but nice combination of colors :-)
I AM IN LOVE WITH THESE HATS!!!! I especially love the last one with the yellow, white, red, and blue color scheme of the corsages! I eagerly look forward to more hat tutorials. :)
Flowers & Feathers! Fabulous Fascinators! This whole video kept me grinning. I've been wearing a flower crown on my birthday for a few years now and suddenly feel compelled to up the game. Also, "Frothy Pouf"? Now we know the bath scrubber name origin story, lol!
I'm making hats! thank you for your tutorial. I have a sewcation coming up right before the July 4th weekend - my friends and I will be making hats and spreading the chapeau joy.
If only you weren't so far away, I have friend who dress in Lolita and I dress like an art teacher most days, so you in your fantastic hats would fit in perfectly! 💖
That yellow hat is a marvellous accent with the black dress! If you can't find a 4th yellow flower, maybe using the white one at the front at the base of the darling black velvet antennae might work.
Love these hats! If you ever want to make one again, may I suggest that you curl some 1/4 inch ribbons (you bake them in retain their shape) and fill it full of these curly ribbons? I think that it would achieve a similar effect to your yellow flowered hat. Have fun in your future crafting and sewing projects. 🥰 Cathy from Alabama
You have such a soothing voice, thank you for posting these. As far as hat suggestions, I'd love to see Day and Evening hats to go with your Cicada gowns
I love these so much. I have way too many vintage hats, but most are black (which is wonderful for me because I love black) but now I'm thinking I'll get crazy with some plum or chartreuse to go with my planned vintage outfits! I love the puffy feather one. Holy crap it's amazing.
Just wanted to say you inspired me. I made a gorgeous 1952 Butterick pattern dress last weekend(in shot purple taffeta) and had enough left over to cover a buckram disk from my stash and add a peacock feather. Now I need an occasion to wear it!
Oh, thank you so much for this tutorial! I adore these wired little tilters, and have been trying to figure out how to replicate them forever! Ironically, I just found one at an estate sale yesterday (not so floral, however). I will definitely be trying out that technique. That last hat is my favorite. Oh, the colors, and I adore those rolled fabric stems on vintage flowers. I wish you many opportunities to wear your stunning hats this season. They are lovely.
I love this video. That first flower hat is so beautiful - and I don't like yellow that much. That last hat with all those flowers... It is sooooo pretty. I would wear it a lot! And I think you are the only one who understands me: I bought 6 vintage hats and 2 newer hats for diy projects in one week... They were all in sale in thrift store so I had to buy them all! All together they were like under 20 euros so they were cheap.
