Recreating the Iconic 'Atonement' Dress on a Budget

Atonement is one of my absolute favorite books of all time, and the iconic green dress worn by Keira Knightley in the movie is one of my favorite movie costumes. I was stuck in quarantine at home so I took on the challenge of recreating the dress as cheaply as I could!

Update-it seems all the accessories have gone up in price since I bought them, I had only paid $3 for the stars and $12 for the feather. The green fabric I used is also now sold out :(

Howdy! It is I, the creator! Poppin in to remind all you lovely people that if you absolutely hate what I made, find it to be one steaming hot pile of poopoo, and think you can do better, there is nothing stopping you from making your own 🥰 🌈 🧵 I saw the dress, wanted it, so I made it to the best of my ability. I'm no professional or expert, this is just a hobby. You, too, have that power! It may not turn out to be a perfect recreation, but the fact you created it and are proud enough to wear it is what counts! ☺️

If you still feel the need to let me know I did something "wrong," then read the following FWC (frequently written comments) so you don't have to repeat what's already been said, because I already know! 😄 1. "The dress is the wrong color" Yes, it do be. The real dress was custom dyed a pretty grasshopper green. Because the fabric was so fragile, it was actually 2 separate pieces: a bodice and a skirt, which they had multiples of in case of tearing. Thus, each one was a slightly different shade of green. Sometimes it looks more emerald, sometimes more mossy green. In short: I couldn't achieve the same green 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2. "The back is too high" Uh oh..someone didn't watch the video 😬 Yes, it do be. If you blacked out part way through the video or left the room to make sure your food wasn't burning, I'll summarize what I said: I wanted the dress to be more wearable for casual occasions and I purposely made the back higher for that. I didn't want any wardrobe malfunctions. It is 100% acceptable to modify things to your comfort level. 3. "The bodice drape is wrong, it should be triangular and...." I'm no expert or professional, and I never said this would be an exact recreation. I made it out of $6 jersey for Pete's sake. This is the way it ended up draping because I made the back higher. I'm happy with it, but if you're not, then I guess it's a good thing you're not the one that has to wear it 🥳 maybe you should take the energy you used to write me a dissertation on what I did wrong to go and make your own! 4. "The fabric should have been silk." You really didn't listen to a thing I said in the intro and it shows.

Awesome replica but I do wish it was darker like the original.. I just love darker shades of green

Thank you! It’s extremely difficult to find that exact shade of green unfortunately since the real one was custom dyed, so I had to settle for what you see

I really like that you chose a knit for this- it hangs and drapes beautifully! I've seen so many tacky, shiny knockoffs, this blows them out of the water.

Awesome tutorial - I loved your very all-inclusive, accessible approach. I didn't feel like I needed to be an expert just to watch this, as many videos make the viewer feel. I also loved the music you choose - perfect match! Fantastic work. 🤓💕

@@watersofglass You are so welcome. I was hooked when you bought a practical fabric and looked up "godet". It takes out the elitism found in other videos and made this much less intimidating. Also loved the humor! 😂 Best wishes!

Hahahaha thank youuu!!! I'm glad my videos come across as friendly to all skill levels, I've been sewing for many many years at this point but I don't consider myself an expert by any means, I make so many mistakes and sometimes just wing it 😂 I'm always learning as I go and I love to teach others! it's all about having fun in the end!!

How many meters of fabric did you use?💗
@watersofglass
@watersofglass 3 года назад
I believe I used about 3 yards, or a little more than 2.5 meters! I remember buying 4 yards to be on the safe side though and had a good amount leftover. So a little more than 3.5 meters total 😁
