Recreation of the Jaguar Hearse from Harold and Maude 

A best friend and I saw this movie when in our mid teens. It had a strong impact on both of us. I would love to have shared this re-creation with him, but he sadly has passed. But I still have many good memories of our friendship, including our appreciation of this movie. Good job, guys.

I saw this today at the Jaguar car show in Victoria Canada, it's quite a work of art, but then again so was the starting material.

My dream car. I have watched that movie at least 30 times and still do. I would have liked to win the lottery to get one. I like to be different. Until recently could not find the same ‘’coup de cœur’’ for a car. Then it happened in November 2019........I have ordered a Cybertruck. Not as stylish but different and noticeable. Cannot wait to race a young man in a F-150 or even a Porsche.......... and look at his face when he realizes that an old lady is driving! Enjoy my dream car! Would love to have a picture of me in it! That would be as close to my dream as possible. When the borders reopen might have the chance to see it. Wow...... amazing car. Bravo! Quelle merveille!

The original movie car seems to have used a 2 seater for the starting point. It's obvious from the smaller door glass viewed in the original movie. This "replica" seems to be built from a 2+2, larger side windows. Close but no banana.

I can't believe they really drove that car off the cliff. 😭 And then even a camera did not work properly or something like that and they put in that still of it falling off the cliff for a few seconds. Amazing car. Since I watched the movie it would be my dream car but sadly the E-Types are rare and very expensive

I have been comparing the car from the movie and this replica and i think they did a great job but you can see that the doors on the replica are way longer than the one on movie and the gutters dont follow the door line like the one in the movie also the roof line is higher on the replica ...

Proportions of the rear are different than the movie version. The top on the original is sloped downward in the rear and appears more streamlined than the replica. Look at the scroll -work and see the difference.

Wow, I never realized it would have become an expensive project but u didn’t cut any corners ( no punt intended, 😜). It’s a good thing you took it upon yourself to do this project! 👌🏽👏🙏 P. S. They could have used a dummy car look a like to destroy in the end scene and saved the original from the movie; I’m sure they regret not thinking 🤔 the destruction of hearstthe in the end and saving the original Hearst car 🚙…..! 🤷‍♂️

PART ONE - OK - apologies … but … this will go round and round and I hope it makes sense … but that’s the way I write leading to having a point … Once upon a time in San Francisco, in the year 1984 … I was in my mid-20's, I got a gig as a Production Assistant (think 'GoFer’- but this being a ‘P.A.’ leads to people being producers, directors and running studios) on what would be one of the co-stars, the inimitable Oscar-winning actress / screenwriter RUTH GORDON'S last film, 'MAXIE' (1985 - Glenn Close, Mandy Patinkin, dir. Paul Aaron) It was my job, while she was on the set to basically look out for that little Ruth. But the atomic Juggernaut she was, she looked out for me. Ruth Gordon was one of a kind - and for the record, they broke the mold with her. This fragile rock was a better place with her and I often think of her with equal parts of glee and the bliss she fostered in me to this day in the arts. WARNING - SPOILER ALERT AHEAD ON ‘HAROLD & MAUDE’: As to the enclosed ‘moving images’ of Pacifica you requested - there are those shot when I was a mere pup of 12 in 1971 enclosed as I was freshly moved from the tough part of the Mission District of San Francisco to the then safe Pacifica and settling with my Mum and her new Husband in Fair Park (Oceanside) and went to Sharp Park Junior High … CUT TO: While waiting for the school bus to arrive at the top of Fairway Drive, one very cold, wet Pacifica Winter’s morning - ‘The Circus’ - meaning the various production trucks containing Hair & Make-Up, Dressing Rooms, Cameras, Dollies, etc., etc., was loading in for the end scene where the one of a kind custom Hearse-JAGUAR ‘Harold’ drives, hurtles off the cliffs above Fairway Park … … only to find ‘Harold’ (Bud Cort) plucking at the Banjo ‘Maude’ (Ruth Gordon) gave him prior to her character’s death. Well, hot snot, folks … guilty as charged - - I played hooky for half a day and went up and ogled the process of filmmaking. I was in a rapture. I was in my place. This is what I wanted to do. Make movies. And I have. And I do. Up comes Cat Stevens singing "If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out" the over the end credits You’ll see Pacifica as Harold drives like a suicide in motion from San Francisco, to the Military Cemetery in San Bruno, to Fairway Park and up the dirt road and we see it rocketing off the aforementioned cliff. CUT TO: 1984 - One the Set of ‘MAXIE’: I told Ruth about playing hooky and how I just HAD to go up and watch them setting up … … and Ruth being Ruth, she good naturally punched me in the shoulder and hollered in that New York accent that never left her, “Ohhhhh, THAT’S just fantastic-! You keep at it-!” And I did. MONTAGE OF THE FOLLOWING YEARS: I’ve worked my way through every area of the movie and TV industry. Learn, learn and I’m still finding out just how little I know of life too. I’m blessed that through the years after Oceana to now, I’ve got a ton of awards for directing and cinematography and … BRAGGING ALERT: This include sharing a PNW Emmy for a drunk driving documentary called, ‘RUSSIAN ROULETTE: THE BOB MORTIMER STORY’ as I created and directed the dramatic scenes. But seriously, this yak fest you’re reading is not meant to be bragging … so, please don’t think that. Tis’ simply the life I chose for myself and the side effects of following your heart. CUT TO - LAST DAY OF MY SENIOR YEAR AT OCEANA: Early June, 1976. I wandered the empty halls … wanting, desperately needing to remember the sum of the ‘Moments’ I was given of the wondrous humanity we were then. You all were part of the plan. Part of the map of my oh-so-human heart. Finally, I made it to the front steps of Oceana and it was there … … I swore an oath to myself there … at the top of those steps we all tread up and down a million times … and - I knew, that the idea, the promise and the prayer of the person I would become that I’d have my first movie made by the time I was 30. CUT TO: In my 20’s … I would become a contributing screenwriter and get paid for it as well as, thanks to a producer at Lucasfilm, write and direct my first forays into commercials in 35mm … but - - by the last few hours of age 29 leading to that promise etched in the stone of my soul’s heart of hearts - I had not had my first film made and here comes the Big Three-Oh. Yikes. Back up a few days … … as I had been approached by an L.A. Producer friend to do some ‘notes’ on a piece of crap script he was attached to (by then I was a script doctor and had stuff in feature films and TV you may have heard of. But like I said; the script they sent me was crap. Me being me - I said, ‘This doesn’t need notes, it needs to be burned and forgotten … and reinvented.’ And in the space of a day, I pounded out the first 18 pages of the story I created and sent it down to the production company. LOW SELF ESTEEM ALERT AVERTED: The production company loved it. So, it was indeed that night - that last night in my 20’s, August 18th, 1988 … just a mere few hours before 30 arrived on August 19, 1988 … … that I got ‘the call.’ PRODUCER: “Dude, them scenes you wrote. They (the money people and director) loved it. You want to go for the gusto and we’ll make it ..?” ME: (gulp) “Yes.” PRODUCER: “We’re going with you. I’ll call in the morning with the money details, profit participation and stuff …” ME: (bigger gulp) “Hmm, OK - Cool.” CUT TO: A few hours later … the promise I made to myself at Oceana. The people I knew. The people - all of you, in one way or another made a difference in the membership of my days all of those eons ago … … and you still do. To me, the good, the bad the ugly of our teen years are evergreen. CONTINUED … PART TWO - THE CODA OF THIS EPIC POST: With no apologies - We’re in our middle 60’s now. Some of us went ahead into the forevers. They swam across the River of Souls and are waiting for us. I turned 65 on August 19th, 2023 … and the proverbial ‘Fat Lady hasn’t sung yet …’ I ain’t done. I’m writing a little epic now that spans almost 30 years with characters that, in real life, I have known, loved, despised and finally accepted as who they are … and through bitter tears had to accept they are not who I wanted them to be. With a little luck and the money people don’t fade away, we’ll shoot it by next Summer into Winter. Fingers crossed. Our lives … our loves … our early, best courage came from Oceana. Our friends, our teachers and perhaps within our wisdom, when we all walked away in that warm June day in 1976 … … our destiny began. And it still does. Just like Ruth Gordon said to me four decades ago, and this, I respectively refer to anyone reading this, “You keep at it-!” I am. I must. I will. Much love to all my fellow Sharks. You made a difference to this callow youth then … … and you still do. It became a minor cult film and one of Quentin Tarantino’s favorites and one of the reasons he hired Bob Forster (a Prince) on ‘JACKIE BROWN’ (1997 - PAM GRIER, ROBERT DENIRO, SAMUEL L. JACKSON, MICHAEL KEATON, BRIDGET FONDA) a few years later … of which he got an Oscar nomination only to lose to Robin Williams for ‘GOOD WILL HUNTING’ (1997) pps: Bob Forster became a dear friend, a mentor and the father I never had and a gauge of how to see this world as it is and not how I want it to be. I miss him tremendously … as he too was one of a kind. A replica is NOT a "one of a kind". It's the second of a kind. Which means the original is not the only one of a kind anymore, it's merely the first of two of a kind. or something...... No, wait. If the original was destroyed in the movie then the replica IS now the only one of its kind. I guess.... I'M SO CONFUSED!

Since as you said, you regret building it since it was so expensive, maybe it would’ve been better if it didn’t get built? Harold and Maude is not Batman or the Munsters. Hardly anyone out there would even understand this reference. It does a disservice to this exceptional classic wonderful movie. I don’t know for sure, but I assume Bud Cort would agree with me. And if Ruth Gordon was still alive, she probably would also.
