To this day she is still one of my favourite actress. She finally won her well deserved Oscar more than 50 years after her debut in acting. I had the immense pleasure to meet her in New York, purely by chance. She was coming out of a theatre that was showing Annie. I went up to her and told her she was my favourite actress. Her first comment was if you like me so much, name some films I was in. After naming 5 she finally realized I was a fan. She invited me to buy her a Coffee which to this day is still one of the highlights of my life. Wonderful woman with an incredible sense of humour. I still think she should have won an Oscar for Harold and Maude.
@@margarethhoughton6782 She was surprised I even recognized her. She said she could walk around in complete anonymity even in New York. The 20 odd minutes I spent with her left a deep impression on me. She was more interested to hear about Toronto than talking about herself or her accomplishments. She was being picked up by someone and when we parted she said she would give me a kiss, but she was a married woman. She had such a positive attitude about life. An amazing woman.
Ruth Gordon was one of a kind. They say that about lots of people but Ruth Gordon truly was a unique force of nature. She created a whole archietype of a role in her later film work but there isn't anyone else who can play it.
The lady interviewing her is pure class patient attentive and sweet. Letting her go on and on and on. I don't understand why no one's ever done a bio pic of her life.
@@enlightenedsoul4282 Thankyou for your kind reply,I’ve almost given up commenting on some videos because of the nasty replies, but Columbo people are nice and friendly👍😀
@@jamie7056 I know.. There is absolutely no need for it Is there. I don't understand it. I'm the same as you. someone always tries to break down a comment to find a flaw in it they can twist. Columbo people are so friendly yes ☺️ it's absolutely brilliant isn't it. My son who is 29 loves columbo and this is his favourite episode & absolutely loves Ruth so so much! He thinks she is so cute. I bought him the box set of columbo for Christmas.. He was very happy with it indeed lol. My son always wishes columbo let her off with this crime at the end, a part we don't see haha.. I'm glad younger people have gotten into columbo during lockdown. From what I've read more younger people have discovered it so I'm really pleased about that so so much. Anyway, this has turned into a chapter 🙈 so I'll finish here but take care & lovely to talk to you. All the very best to you. God bless ya 🍀 🍀 🍀 🍀 🍀
@@enlightenedsoul4282 That’s heartening to hear youngsters like your son appreciate the high production values of Columbo, they are so well written and made.I particularly love all the wealthy houses and expensive cars. Yes I wanted Columbo to let her off too, like he did with Janet Leigh. I think my favourite line in this episode is when they are both in Abigail’s Rolls Royce and she says to Columbo,” Shall we compare poverty stories?” and Columbo ‘s snappy reply is of course,”Not in a Rolls Royce Ma’am!” So nice to chat, god bless you too😀
@@jamie7056 dya know.. That's exactly what my son loves too, the houses & cars (he loves her house in this episode). Yes haha, that is a great line about poverty stories in her lovely car. It always makes me laugh around the beginning when they both sit in the living room and he asks if he can sit down on this particular chair and she replies "well that's what it was made for 300 years ago" lol., I think she says 300 years.. It just tickles me. I love the magician one with Jack cassidy? Now you see him I think it's called and I like murder by the book too with miss lasenka. I feel so sorry for her.. I could go on. I always hope olumbo didn't lock Janet Leighs dance business partner up either though cause columbo knows he didn't do it. It's really sad isn't it. But that joke in the more modern ones with a guy running for senate or something political& columbo tells a joke about a flasher, call that a lining, loool, that's so funny! It's one of my favourite jokes. I'm gonna stop now cause I'll carry on all night. I agree with you though about the youngsters appreciating such a great TV show. My son always says he wishes Jessica fletcher and columbo accidently met up in an episode.. Solved a murder together. I suppose that would only be great if you like murder she wrote too, I do. Anyway, twke care, once again lovely to talk to you. God bless 🍀 🍀 🍀
I visited Martha's Vineyard in the mid 70's, and while there stopped by Ruth's house on Cottage Street and knocked on the door. The housekeeper invited my friend and I in, and we waited in her living room for a while. We did not get to see Ruth then, as she was taking a afternoon nap. Still a kick to be there and see all her awards. Something like that could never happen today!
I'm so glad I caught this classic interview with the wonderful, Ruth Gordon!! She is much like her character, she played in "Harold and Maude". A free spirit and a great talent. She is so funny and endearing. She was, one of a kind, God rest her. 😌🌹💐💐💐♥️🙏
Hands-down, my favorite Actress of Hollywood's Golden Era, Ruth Gordon is what I would aspire to be like as my seniority of life inevitably comes, eventually. I Love her. ❤️
As a Brit I apologise for not knowing the interviewer, however she is a delight, asking clear succinct questions that made you feel she had done her homework on her guest. And the way she allowed Ruth to just let the words flow, truly ‘caviar for the senses’ . Love you Ruth (and a error from me ) Love you also Eileen Prose, alas the world of journalism and the skillful interviewer like yourself puts todays bunch in the shade. Here in the UK we had Parkinson, a pro like yourslf, whilst mainly retired still appears here and there.. P.S. happy to sub kiddo
Amen she’s my favorite to she really played the part of Minnie in Rosemary’s Baby with Mia Farrow I wasn’t born until a year later I grew up watching them in movies such talented actresses Ruth is the adorable little lady I love her 🥰😇🙏
One of Ruth’s quotes that I love is, “Never, ever give up, and never, ever face the facts!” Love that, and maybe it explains her spunk and vitality. ❤️
You are correct, you do have talent. She is the most adorable woman ever. I adore her. I loved her character in Columbo, Rosemary's baby and what ever happened to aunt Alice. Such a brilliant talent and a fabulous woman all round. X x x
You didn’t mention the movie Harold and Maud, excuse me if Im telling you something you already know, but if you haven’t seen that movie you must see it she’s wonderful in it..
@@Tcchamp5877 hello. Ahh I've never seen or heard of it. Thankyou for letting me know, I appreciate it. Sorry for this very late reply.. I'd no idea I'd got a reply. Apologies. Have a great week, thanks again 🍀 🍀 🍀
Ruth Gordon was so full of energy and a wonderful actor. A true life force. Love this interview. As someone else said, I’m sorry not to have come across this interview and interviewer before (I’m a Brit). What a great job you’ve done on this. So respectful and clearly had a great rapport. I’ll be checking out all the other vids now. Thank you 🙏
So enjoyable. The woman who interviewed is to be cherished. Miss Ruth Gordon was made to feel at ease. Barbara Walters could have learned a few lessons.
Tonight June 21st 2020 Columbo came on at 9:00pm in California and I was watching Columbo with Ruth Gordon in it. The title of that episode was "Catch me if you can". Ruth Gordon played a writer who almost got away with killing her nephew . Very good episode. It's ironic how I see Columbo with Ruth Gordon in it and the comment below me mentions The Show Columbo with Ruth Gordon. I mostly remember Ruth Gordon in Rosemary's Baby. She was really good in it👍🏼😁
I came here thinking of Harold and Maude. I thank you for posting the biographical information because I had not noticed the credits for the screenplays she did for George Cukor/Tracy/Hepburn before. That was pivotal in the legend of Hepburn's career. I am also thinking of historical feminist film criticism I read by Molly Haskell. Wouldn't that work also lead the way to Nora Ephron? And maybe she was a role model for Carrie Fisher.
She was a true talent...no doubt. That being said, if I'm not mistaken, didn't she essentially admit to insider trading during this interview? Or was it so long ago that particular charge/crime didn't exist?
Thanks so much for sharing this, Eileen. You mention near the end that you'd be talking with her about aging, it would be wonderful to hear/see her on the topic. Is that video available on RU-vid?
I've read A. Scott Bergs biography on Kate Hepburn several times over the years and (though it's been a while) I seem to remember reading that although Ruth and Garson were great friends to Kate and Spencer, after Spencer passed away Garson wrote a rather scandalous book ("scandalous" in Kates mind, i suppose i should say) about Kate and her relationship with Spencer ..and she never forgave nor spoke to him again. To which i say, "Quite right." Kate was a notoriously private person and as much as i've studied her over half my life, I can succinctly imagine what a betrayal that was to her.
I watch "Any which but loose" Those lines before Clide put a big sloppy kiss on her. Not to forget the Bikies and the shotgun. Trying to get her drivers license, those two put a smile on my face.
Ruth had a very interesting take on Prohibition, it gave the idea to everyone that it was alright to break laws. and here we are. funny thing that those who would believe they where doing right get exactly the opposite in the long run. a good hard lesson from this feisty lady.
The more you know about Ruth Gordon, the more you realize she never acted a day in her life, or acted everyday in her life. (And that's absolutely fine.)
Before the crash, she "got a call from a friend who told her there was going to be trouble" so she sold all her stock & cashed out just before the feet depression set in....hmmm?
