Hey everyone Rho here! Today we're discussing the Adeptus Mechanicus and the methods used to man their fleets. How even those following the Machine-god rely on the manpower of the Imperium...
Spoiler Warning to begin as the events we're discussing today are from the Warhammer 40,000 novel "Priests of Mars" by author Graham McNeill. As always I really recommend you read the stories for yourself first without spoilers. As that's the best way to enjoy the lore for yourself!

I mean truth be told this is ONE method of recruitment, the Mechanicus has multiple ways of recruiting fresh bodies into its fold. Some are legit willing volunteers for either the Priest hood or the skitarii, some are flash clone or vat grown. A couple more for the skitarii is they were either former convicts or deserters with some skitarii I heard even being made out of different parts from corpses. It all depends on the Forge and Arch Mago's, as the mechanicus is giant and all have their own independent methods of operating or making of the necessary operations to fulfill their quest.

I listened to an audio reading where a member of the mechanium came across an injured soldier with a prosthetic leg. The wounded soldier pleaded for help, only for the Magos to chop off his cybernetic leg for parts. Edit: grammar

And yet the 'Forges of Mars' trilogy also shows how human the Mechanicus can be. Notably in the relationship between the father and daughter Stellar Cartographers, Vitali and Linya Tychon. Also it explains what happened to Trooper Hawke from 'Storm of Iron'.

We need stories about the League of Votaan and their hatred for the AdMech. Would be interesting to see how the Imperium kind looks the other way with everything going on.

My Grandfather was 'Shanghai'd' from a Bar in Portland, Oregon in the 1920's. He woke up on a Norwegian Whaler 2 days later. They put him work shoveling coal. When the Bosun found out he was an experienced Merchant Seaman, he was able to get out of the coal gang, and 'promoted' to maintenance (oiler?). The only people on the ship who would talk to him were the Cantonese Seamen, who taught him Cooking, Laundry, & the Cantonese Language. 2 years later, when the Whaler returned to the US, he was 'released'. No thanks, no 'thank you for your service'. My Grandma was told he was dead! Priests of Mars was Excellent! Made me love the AdMech more! Great Job Rho!

@@TheCorrodedMan THANK YOU! he was! He was part of the maritime transition from Sail to almost-Nuclear. As a teen he was before he was Shanghai'd he was shipwrecked in the Caribbean for 1 year on a tiny atoll, living on a diet of Rainwater, crab, conch and coconut. In 1943, during a run in the North Atlantic to supply England, my dad who was on the S.S. Booker T. Washington, watched as U-Boat sank my Grandad's ship the S.S. W.E.B. Dubois. He was recovered with no injury. A year later, off the Cape of Good Hope, a U-Boat damaged his Cargo Ship in a Convoy that was relieving Capetown S.A. Then a storm hit, it cracked the hull. He was out there for weeks on a palate of lashed cargo. 3rd degree sunburns. He retired after the war. Proud to be named after him!

Pretty much. If you already don't have a life worth living, why not? Grandfather Nurgle at least cares and will see to it you don't suffer. Slaneesh will leave you a despirate addict, but at least you'll have experienced an actual high at least once in your misserable life. You have no free will under Tzeentch, but at least he hides the puppet strings so you aren't constantly reminded of the chains that make you a slave. You'll almost certainly die quickly in the service of Khorne, but it's not like your life had any value before, and maybe with his help you might take some of the bastards who drove you to this down with you. The Imperium is, and always has been, its own worst enemy. The galaxy is the shit hole it is because the Imperium and its beaurocracy makes it this way. And anyone who even imagines life could be better will either be killed or recognize that the only choice is to betray the blighted civilization that had long since betrayed humanity itself.

Absolutely awesome book series. I had such a good time reading Priest of Mars and later listening to the audiobooks. The characters are well written, the districtiption of the Ark being so large as to have forges on it was mind blowing, and the call back with Guardsman Hawke to another fantastic book (Storm of Iron) was cool. However, I would never recommend this series to a new 40k fan, it's way to much 40k all at once, I think. There are so many different character (Space Marines, Rogue Traders, Titan Crew, the Aeldar, Cadians, etc.), I think it can be overwhelming. I love it but can see all that info throwing a new fan off.

Indentured service to the mechanicum sounds awful, if I was a space marine I wouldn’t allow it and my Chapter/legion would go to war If this didn’t change. Take the murderers and criminals for these jobs not the civilians.

It could be worse? At least they aren’t getting turned into to servitors although betwixt a life of brutal slavery and a life of brutal slavery after being lobotomized, I might pick the latter. Sure the surgery seems “unpleasant” but it’s all over pretty quickly and maybe you get to be a 2 story tall battle servitor

Possibly the most interesting subfactions/allies of the imperium. Most of their gear is unique or custom. Their elite skitari are no joke. Secutors and arch magos can be beast and scrap with whoevs wants it. Weird you didn't mention the toasters...

Im fully aware of AD mechanicus kind of independency from Imperium bcs it provides with everything that it needs, but by the blood of sanguinius, how i wish the emperor would manifest himself as a prophet of omnissiah and command the ADmech to change their nature..reding that imperial noble turned into servitor and this makess me sick of Admech
