This DIY video walks you through making a rectangular rope rug. There are tips and tricks scattered throughout. I show how to connect one color rope with a new color rope so that the connection will last as long as the rug! During the last couple minutes, I show and discuss the loom I made for rug weaving. Don't miss the part about the loom - making a loom that works with you is a big help so rug making can be done with ease and enjoyment.

Very clever loom creation - one that I will actually try to duplicate! And the rugs are so cool…I’m getting obsessed by wanting to weave one ( or 2 or 10!) Thanks for posting your vid! ❤️❤️

I love it, and i love the foresight of the extra inch of wood to keep the rope from falling off when you take the pipes off. I've got a few thousand fathoms of old pot warp in my yard that i'm thinking i might turn into rugs. - thanks for your help!

Hi I'm super interested in making some of these gorgeous durable rugs but I am concerned if they are outside in the weather, and they get wet or snow on them and are laying on concrete, are they slippery when stepped on... not the boot on the rug so much... but does the mat slide on the concrete... or we also have fiberglass decking... worried that if I'm coming into the house arms full of groceries will I end up on my butt hahahaha..I guess, in the end if they are slippery I'll hafta figure out something to glue under them?? Now to find some rope... thank you for the awesome idea!!
@LifeFourPointZero
@LifeFourPointZero 7 месяцев назад
They certainly can be slippery! The concrete depends on whether it is very smooth or a little rough. I have had good luck on most concrete surfaces. The composite decking can sometimes be too slippery.

Great idea, love the video, will give me something to do during this "stay at home" business! I live on the complete opposite coast as you and a wee bit inland. Not much commercial fishing in my parts! I dont think they catch many lobsters here on the west coast. would I still try to ask for "lobster warp"?
@LifeFourPointZero
@LifeFourPointZero 4 года назад
You might look online to see if it could be shipped to you at a reasonable cost. If that doesn't work, you could try a local hardware or building supply store for polypropylene line. It's a synthetic line that does not rot, making it perfect for these kinds of outdoor rugs. Failing that, a nylon line could work. Nylon can have some stretch, particularly when it gets wet, so that's why the polypropylene/lobster warp is better, but they are all better than a cotton or hemp material. Good luck!

How do you determine how much tope it will take for a rug? Thankyou
@LifeFourPointZero
@LifeFourPointZero 5 дней назад
You multiply the number of rows you will weave by the length of rug you will create then add a multiplication of the number of poles times the width of the rug then add a buffer of a yard or two to compensate for the curves of the weave.

The rope goes by a couple names depending on the part of the country. Here in New England, it is called pot warp. It is polypropylene … you can get it at stores that supply the fishing profession with their gear and rope/line.

Ok, I've done 5 mats so far and given as gifts. It's been a lot of fun but I'm having an issue with my weaves. Maybe I'm pulling it too tight as I go, but after the 5 or so rows, the material is higher in the center area as opposed to the ends and the more rows I add, the more the pipes are no longer in a straight line like yours. They are more tilted and the rows are not even. It's almost like the pipes are being squeezed together? If that makes sense. Like I said, I think I might be pulling the rope too tight, what do you think. I'm using 3/4 PVC pipe and FYI, all my rope is brand new, being on the west coast I don't have access to used rope so maybe the rope is too stiff?
@highanddryful

How do you figure how much rope is needed?
@LifeFourPointZero
@LifeFourPointZero 6 месяцев назад
Depends how many tubes you use and how many rows of weaved rope you do. I think I typically use 24 tubes and weave about 30 rows. This makes a mat a little shorter than 4 feet long and it would require somewhere between 150 and 175 feet of rope, depending on how tightly you pull the weave.
