Ever since I found your channel a few years ago, hubby made me my looms, I have happily made rugs, place mats and now after a few tries, I am looming a rug with old towel strips... I think it will work out. Thank you for a fantastic channel.

How did your towel weaving work? Making strips of old towels must’ve been labor-intensive to start with. I bet a rug made of old towels would be very sturdy and last a long time but I’d love to hear how it worked.

What a great Q&A? One more...how do you finish? How do you take tge work off the loom? Could I do a single crochet around the edge in a solid colour to finish?

Sorry, I didn't show taking it off in this video. At the 26:00 mark in this video I show it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PIeqHdVQf1o.html. Yes, a small single crochet would work, I haven't done that yet, but it may look pretty cute! Let me know if you try!

My one made me a loom 1.5 years ago. In the meantime I have woven many rags. For me, for others. Among other things a memory rag. A dear acquaintance had died and I have made from her clothes, fabric scraps a rag for her son. The lady did not want her clothes to be disposed of.

My son made me looms for my birthday. I love them. The one thing that I am always a bit confused about is when you start the weaving, the first warping ends a third of the way down because of the knot and then what do I do? So I have always made that one go all the way down to the bottom of the loom. It seems to work for me but maybe I need to re-watch your first video on weaving. Thanks for such great ideas.
@DIYOnTheHouse
@DIYOnTheHouse 2 года назад
Not a problem. After you go through the loop on that warping, you can just treat the loop as one strand or go through the center for a few rows. Or at the point that you get to the end of the loop, just go with the one strand, you will never see the transition. If I didn't understand the question, let me know! Have fun!

Thank you for these amazing videos! I am so inspired to make rugs. I'm getting stuck on fabrics -- Are there any fabric types that you recommend or don't recommend? What about combos that work or don't work? Do you have any tips on how to choose color combos? All your rugs are so beautiful and I'm notoriously bad at combining colors.
@Gabi-lt4mx
@Gabi-lt4mx Год назад
Why you don't make a mixed one. All colours you have on hand. My first had been only blue and white. Using old blankets, shirts and so one. I prefer cotton fabrics or cotton mixed with polyester. Have fun. You can make it.

I have used all combinations of fabrics - I just avoid anything that ravels a tons - the strings get really annoying. For colors, I try to be random on my patterns in case I run out of a color! I would love to see pics of your work diyonthehouse@gmail.com!

I wanted a loom to make placemats, so I built a loom 13x18...making 12x18 mat. It seems awfully big for a placemat. Can you recommend a good size loom for that, but not as big. It's too big for my parent's round kitchen table. Also, AFTER taking it off the loom when I finished, I found one loom on the end didn't get wrapped under the rod. How can I fix this now? I made it for a gift & can't give it away like it is. ANY suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you 💜 I LOVE watching your tutorials. I'd like to see more on weaving things. I've watched them all MANY times over the 2 years. 😊
@DIYOnTheHouse
@DIYOnTheHouse 2 года назад
Hmm, that is the size that I would have done, a typical placement is 12x18. I made a table runner and the finished size is 11" x27". If you make a new one, let me know what size you do - I'm curious! For the missing rod, I have done that before, I have taken thread and hand sewn it in place. When I use string, I take string and tie it in place. You typically can't tell after the fact. If you want to send me pictures email them to diyonthehouse@gmail.com and I can take a closer look. Thanks for watching the videos - totally appreciate it!

Looks a great method. I was thinking of using a peg loom. I wonder what you see as the benefit of this over peg please? I think I saw you cutting continuous bias strips the other day but I can’t find the video today, can you help please? I have different weight fabrics and plan to cut different widths accordingly. Would that affect method I choose? I love that you talked about joining I could t get my head around how to make a rug as big as I want. Thank you.
@DIYOnTheHouse
@DIYOnTheHouse 9 месяцев назад
This one gives a much tighter weave than the peg loom - the peg loom is pretty - but the weave is loose. I wouldn't make them too much different widths - I think that would make a bumpy looking rug, having thick and thin parts. For rugs, to do long strips, I rip them. You don't need to do bias strips - any strip works!
@doglover7457

l do that all the time. I never noticed a difference in the rug.

I'm on my second rug. The first one came out great. I'm about 4 inches from being done. One of my weft has come undone. It was sewn to another piece instead of a knot. I only have one end showing! I don't know what to do. I can't figure out how to post a picture. Do you know how I can fix this?

I just got a peg loom and am having great difficulty keeping the edges straight. When I push the weaving down to the end, the edges don't stay straight. So how do I, when I take the pegs out, push the fabric to end and maintain right angle corners?
@DIYOnTheHouse
@DIYOnTheHouse 6 месяцев назад
Sounds like you may be pulling your weaving too tight, causing it to pull in. Have you completed one yet? Or does it just look this way while you are in the process? They do look different when you complete it. You can email me pictures if you would like to diyonthehouse@gmail.com

I’m guessing we don’t have to worry about securing the top of the rug before you take it off the loom, ami right? Just the bottom?
@DIYOnTheHouse
@DIYOnTheHouse Год назад
The top is secured by starting under each nail on your first row -- so you are correct, the bottom row needs secured by going under each nail! Have fun!

What kind of material can you use for the warp? I have just been giving some stretchy fabric. Not t shirt fabric,but the fabric that you would make a dress or shirt out of. Not sure but it is soft and stretchy. Could I use that?
@DIYOnTheHouse

You can certainly use a stretchy one - I typically use old sheets for the warp - they work great!

I’ve made several rugs but on some of the side edges I have loopy open stitches when I remove the rods. Should I be weaving just around the rod or count the rod and the first warp as one and weave around them both?
@DIYOnTheHouse

You need to weave around the rod and the warp on each end.

Sorry - it takes 60 yards of strips - not 60 yards of fabric. 😀 I used 3-4 sheets to make the set of 3 kitchen rugs.

I don't understand why you don't start at the bottom. It's easier to Beat Weft Downwards than it is to constantly Beat Upwards. Makes for a tighter weave too, thereby making your rug last longer.

The rods can be found at practically any "big box" hardware store if your local store doesn't have them. I literally saw them today in Home Depot. To my knowledge, they're almost always 36 inches. Side Note: Please DON'T put a "disclaimer" in the description to let people know you might get a lead generation commission. When did it become a thing to shame someone for daring to make some extra cash via their own work? Seriously? When you watch TV and a car commercial comes on, do you hear, "Please note: We may receive a financial incentive if you visit a local dealership, like we just suggested in the commercial, and actually purchase a vehicle, which is the point the marketing campaign." Sorry. I come from the sales world. Earning a commission is NOTHING to be ashamed of. Exploiting people is, but simply posting affiliate links is hardly exploiting people.
