In this tutorial I demonstrate how to make a rectangular rope mat. I am using paracord 550, about 7-8 feet of it. This creates a mat with 2 sides of 5 bights and 2 sides of 4 bights.
This style of mat is also shown in The ultimate book of decorative knots by Lindsey Philpott.

I very much like this guys tutorials, they're easy to follow - usues plain language instead of rope makers jargon - Most other tutorials will start straight up something like "make an overhand loop" or "Garrick bend" blah blah - he just says make a loop "then under over under" which makes it easier to memorise & visualise later one. some hard core knot makers would probably say well you should learn what over hand loop is - I don't care I just want to learn & memorise how to make the mat extra jargon is just noise to me

Hi I’ve followed a couple of tutorials and always managed it. This time I got completely lost- are their vids you’d recommend for learning terms and the fundamentals because that that cut between the finished knot and the tightened up matt completely threw me

so to tighten do you take all the slack to 1 end and keep following one end?

Hey there! Usually I will just take one end and use it to follow the other. Once that one is used up, then take the other end and use it to follow the first end. I hope that makes sense :). Mark

thanks. I think I understand. I may not speak for everyone. but I wouldn't mind longer videos to see the entire process.

It would have been real nice had you at least started to tighten the rectangle. Stopping where you did, you left us hanging as to how to go about that process. but otherwise, very clear & decent directions.
