I am both a piano and classical guitar student and I never dreamed that this composition by Tarrega could be played on piano with the full tremolo effects like you have played on this video. But, then again, you play Chopin's compositions so eloquently and so effortlessly that everything else is just a "walk in the park" for you. Thank you for this video and if Mr. Tarrega was alive, he would be pleased of how well you captured his composition on piano. Simply AMAZING....

Video dialogue as text for online translation as requested: Francisco Tárrega 1852 1909 was a Spanish composer and classical guitarist of the Romantic period. Here's the composer's name and the name of the composition featured in this video pronounced by a native Spanish speaker: "Francisco Tárrega" - "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" The title translates as "Memories of the Alhambra". The Alhambra is a very old fortress dating back to 889 and is located in the region of Granada in Andalusia in Spain. "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" was written for solo guitar and is one of Tárrega's best known pieces. This piano arrangement imitates the style of the classical guitar with 8 repeated notes to the crotchet almost all the way through. The video begins with my recording to follow with the score then is repeated in overhead keyboard. I've added a few quick tutorial tips towards the end of the video, the beginning of the tutorial section is time-coded in the video information. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Quick Tips Tutorial: "Memories of the Alhambra" on first glance might seem quite straightforward to play but in actual fact it's very difficult and to play the repeated notes evenly from beginning to end takes a lot of practice, concentration and a cooperative piano action. The speed you will be able to repeat the demisemiquavers in the right hand largely depends on the speed of your piano action's repetition. We play four notes in the right hand to each quaver in the left so when you practice make sure each time the note being played with the left hand is accompanied by the first note in the group of four notes played with the 4th finger of the right hand. However, it gets very tricky around the little triplet turns so I've worked out a simple fingering which is the same for each triplet. I'll play each of these sections sequentially, slowly as they occur. If we play a note but don't allow the hammer to return all the way back to the resting position, that's to say, allow the key to return just half or three quarters of the way to the top with our fingers, the hammer just moves a little away from the string and you can play the note again but as the distance the hammer has to travel to the string is much reduced the tone is softer and the repetition is faster.

Paul - This is excellent, thank you for this. I noticed that most classical guitar performances of this piece, utilize the “classical” 3-note tremolo, and not the 4-note “flamenco tremolo” technique. So, I wonder what a 3-note tremolo technique on the piano would look like fingering-wise, and if it would sound more like the 3-note tremolo on the guitar, which is the more common version played. Also, I would assume that it should be easier to execute than the 4-note version, right?

Hi Paul, I really enjoy your tutorial and rendition of this famous guitar pieces. Seeing/hearing is believing. I never thought that this is possible with the piano. I actually have question regarding the tremolo, in the original piece Tarrega was using 6 repetitive notes in every crochet, is there any consideration why you change it to 8 notes? Or is it more difficult to play? Regards,

Well played! Lovely! So beautiful (and how on earth do you manage to phrase the tremolo?!!!!?) Did you know that this piece was used in several movies, "Killing Fields" among them, and Mike Oldfield first made it popular without his record company giving credits to the composer. Thank you for posting!!!

In the guitar score you play 3,not4 repeated notes i.e tremolo so why not 3 on piano?

Another wonderful work by Tarrega is the Capricho Arabe: besides the great paraphrase by Emanuele Delucchi, it sadly lacks a more "literal" transcription for the piano...

I think the links to the free score under the video has been hacked. They are now leading to some very questionable websites.

Curious why you chose to make the range so treble-dominated.
