Just for fun I tested out 3 different recurves with similar draw weights. 48" Bear Super magnum 50#, 56" Stalker Coyote, 60" Win and Win Black Wolf 50#. I shoot instinctive and split finger when target shooting and hunting. All three bows shoot fantastic, and are enjoyable to shoot.
***EDIT, the Stalker Momentum shown at the end with a 465 Grain arrow is actually .37 not the .42 shown.
My draw length is 27.5"
Arrow weights tested are 590 Grains, 465 Grains, 440 Grains.
Draw weights at 27.5" are
Bear 48.1#
Stalker 48.9#
Black Wolf 49.3#
Slower heavier arrows all have a higher Kinetic Energy and Momentum rating. Dropping 150 Grains of arrow weight (heaviest to lightest arrow) Gained 20FPS on all 3 bows. All 3 bows in my opinion were more than satisfactory in their velocity. And all shot well.
A well placed shot with a sharp point will produce the best results when hunting. Any of these setups would work for black bear, deer, elk and even a Moose. But a heavier slower arrow will be the best insurance.

So much for the often repeated fallacy that the Bear Super Mag 48 is a slow shooter! For a short bow, it's zipping those arrows right along, faster than many longer recurves! Thanks for posting!

I fully expected it to be 15-20FPS slower than it was. I was pleasantly surprised. Under 28” of draw, an extra inch or more of brace height, and it still was fairly quick. I made up some 600 grain Grizzly stick arrows and shot them, they were more correctly spined than the 590 grain arrow in this video. They flew 160FPS. That’s about 12.5GPP and has 22% FOC. Im gonna use them as the tree stand and ground blind setup from that Supermag. I’m hoping to get a blackbear this coming spring with them.

A shorter Bow shoots faster. I thought this was common knowledge. Longer will loose a few fps .. but less harsh

Well Done. Thank You. I have a Bear Kodiak Magnum. Love it. Great for the thick Cedar Bush area we hunt in. The Super Mag is on my wish list.

Thanks, one of the great outcomes from this was to find that those short bear bows aren't as slow as they may have been made out to be. I have owned 3 different super mags at different times and have enjoyed each one. K Mag I haven't had yet but would love to.

Longer limbs always means that the limbs dont have to move as far toget the same piwer stroke a 70 inch bow will open your eyes.

These bows are all three less poundage than 50lb draw weight. Most guys shoot 5 to 10 lbs heaiver draw weight so would even be a few FPS faster. But this demonstration shows the lighter easier to draw and hold shoot plenty fast enough for hunting... Great video with great info......THANKS

Thanks for the comment. I used to shoot a 55# and found 46-48# was a much more comfortable and consistent to shoot. I have every confidence that a 40# bow with a properly tuned arrow and sharp broadhead will do the job. And some bowyers do such a great job that their bows will zip an arrow, I believe when I adjusted up the Black wolf to 52# I only gained 3-4fps from the 4# increase.

OutFrickin’Standing comparisons Sir......It makes me confident to say that I made a very good choice with the Black Wolf also. After seeing the chrono results that you compared of the three that you have, I had to take my chrono out and do a little test of my own as well. And sure enough.....I was blown away. 182 FPS on 27” draw. I believe the lighter 8.4 gpi arrows will yield faster FPS, if I went that route. Thanks for sharing buddy, happy shooting 😎🙏🏹🏹👍

Its a great bow, I now have a set of Hoyt Satori Carbon Velos limbs on another riser, they don't shoot as quick as the Black Wolf limbs, they are nice, but I think the Black wolf is a better limb by a nose.

Great video I was disappointed the bear was the slowest but good info! I've noticed with the smaller bow it tends to be a little slower. My bear Kodiak Magnum at 50 lb 28 and 1/2 inch draw a 60-inch bow is around 185 ft per second with a 530gr arrow. My super mag seems slower due to how the same arrow flies from it. But now I gotta chrony that bow and see how it compares. This was fun thanks man gets a bow maker thinking🥳🤯
@Bowstringdotcom
@Bowstringdotcom 2 года назад
While the SuperMag was slowest, I was still very happy with the results. A 50# 60” Super kodiak was nearly identical to the stalker results in a later test I did.

On the super mag I slowed down the video and you can see that the arrow is slightly not high. I bet if you brought the knocking point down a little bit, the arrow will go straight which you will get a faster speed just observation not being a jerk I’m only noticing this because I am currently trying to tune arrows and get the best flight possible, so it caught my eye that’s all great video

I feel differently. I began bow hunting in the 1960's and we never measured velocity or foot pounds of energy. We knew that even though most states required 40# draw for deer a 35# or even a 25# draw weight could put deer meat on your table, providing you used a quality 2 blade broadhead that was well sharpened. When it all comes down to it, isn't that what's important. You're making things too complex.
@Bowstringdotcom
@Bowstringdotcom 3 года назад
It’s not complex, just curiosity. Any of these arrows from any of these bows would do the trick with a sharp head and well placed shot, but it’s fun to know what they each do. I have a recurve my Dad made in High school in the 70’s in a shop class that is slow as tar, you can tell when you shoot it too, but it killed a deer once too. It’s fun to see what each one does.

Everyone I have heard talk about the black wolf had similar comments about the speed. I will say that the supermag held it's own better than I expected, considering it's reputation for being slow.
@Bowstringdotcom
@Bowstringdotcom 3 года назад
I was very surprised by the Super Mag, much faster than anticipated, especially considering it has a taller brace height and I have an average draw length. That black wolf is fast.
@benji280792
@benji280792 3 года назад
The Black Wolf is incredably fast, but it's a bow that forget nothing... For me, the supermag is a bow made to give enough speed to short draw, so it shouldn't be slow compared with the same drawlenght.

@fernandobarros7059
@fernandobarros7059 3 года назад
Excellent vídeo. I’m looking to buy my first ILF. I was thinking about the Satori at first but after seeing some reviews about the BW I may change my mind. Every video talks about how fast, smooth to draw and accurate the BW is. But nobody talks about a comparison between the two. Can you, or any one else has experience with both? Thank you!
@Bowstringdotcom
@Bowstringdotcom 3 года назад
I shot the satori also because something about it really appealed to me. Here were my thoughts. It needs a stabilizer, the bottom of the riser is heavier than the top, so after the shot it rotates the top of the riser back towards you. I didn’t care for that unbalanced feel, and I didn’t want a stabilizer on a trad bow. I now have a set of the Satori Carbon Velos Trad limbs, the black wolf limbs feel identical (Smooth draw) and shoot the same arrow, with the same draw weight adjustment the exact same velocity. So a $350-$400 set of Black wolf limbs preforms identical to a $850 set of Satori Carbon limbs. The satori is popular, but the Black wolf should be equally popular in my opinion, it is a ZERO vibration bow, it’s almost odd feeling seeing that nothing else you shoot is that vibration free. The Satori has more color options, I have seen camo Black Wolf bows but it’s just one camo option. I now have a OMP Carbon Z riser as I wanted some wood on my bow, it fits that bill and has a very good grip for my hand. I’ve also shot a 40# set of Black wolf limbs, just as good as the 50#. Fast and smoooooth! Shot the same GPP the same velocity. This was my first ILF bow, I wanted a bear kodiak takedown, but for the price people ask for the bear, and the versatility of ILF I’m pretty impressed with ILF and am letting the idea of having the bear slip away. ILF beats the bear in every comparison except nostalgia. The bear has sentimental value or appeal, but loses the comparison in every other category to an ILF in my opinion, especially with the dip in quality bear bows have nowadays.
@Bowstringdotcom
@Bowstringdotcom 3 года назад
Basically the BW doesn’t have the variety of the Satori as far as looks are concerned, but it’s got loads of performance. Mine looked cool with a dark brown rawhide selway quiver on it later on. But that’s about all the dress up you can do with it. Satori will give you the options to play with the looks more, but I’ll bet anyone the standard satori limbs can’t shoot as fast as the carbon BW limbs, and probably not as buttery smooth.
@fernandobarros7059
@fernandobarros7059 3 года назад
@@Bowstringdotcom I can’t thank you enough. This info is what I needed to confirm. The BW is absolutely unbeatable on the price/quality ratio. The feedback of the zero shock is for me the most impressive feature reported. Have you ever tried the BW riser with other limbs? How is the shock? Thank you once again
@Bowstringdotcom
@Bowstringdotcom 3 года назад
I haven’t, but the ability of the carbon riser to absorb and dampen the vibration should be consistent with other limb types too.

Whats the arrow weight on that? Seems a bit generous to be honest. I would be very surprised if anyone can get over 215-220 with a recurve, even a Morrison with the super curve style limbs doesn't do much past 215 FPS.

@@Bowstringdotcom i shoot at 6.5 grain per pound, the speed is really incredible... The draw length has the biggest influence on the speed. My bowtech insanity that is advertised for 340 shoot really fast but i have set it at 32" draw length. I saw a border recurve shooting at 200fps with 10grain per inch.. They dont say the weight of the arrow, but you can see some kassai or grozer bows shoot at 300 fps.

@@Bowstringdotcom Good morning sir, Well it is possible 😉 Go for "Thomas Brugger" or "Extreme Archery" This guy is a beast. And german enigeering is brutal. He shoots a 150# Falkenholz hunting recurve, called the Raptor Rex. He hits the chrono with 350 fps. The bow has no minimum gpp so he uses the lightest arrow he could find. Does not makes sense, but it's fun and he loves the speed 😁
@johnbarron4265
@johnbarron4265 3 года назад
250 fps is stratospheric for a recurve bow. Having the wingspan of an NBA player certainly helps you get there. As for the magical 200 fps barrier, I'm highly skeptical of any 200+ fps claim with a 28" draw and 10 gpp. So far the fastest that's been verified is about 196 fps out of an ILF rig using Uukha VX limbs. The fine folks at Grozer and Thomas Brugger of Extreme Archery showcase the incredible efficiency of their bows by the insane chronograph numbers they achieve with ultralight arrows. These tests are for demonstration purposes only and are not intended to be repeated by others. I am also skeptical of any bow manufacturer that has not specified a minimum arrow weight recommendation. Shooting ultra-light arrows will severely shorten the lifespan of any bow, no matter how well-engineered it is.

@@johnbarron4265 honestly i was very surprised too. i made this bow for that anyway. And The carbon riser make it very quiet. I saw a border at 28" 60# hit the 200fps at 10gpp. As the owner said, "it's a formula One... But it dont make many laps..." The Kassai tests are Really strange as well. But to be honest, we made some tests with friends. One has a compound advised at 315 fps IBO and shoot at 60@28" at 8gpp it shoot at 220fps... We changed the arrows to have 5,5gpp we got 265fps. When i tried my bowtech(340ibo), i tried it at 28" for 5,6 gpp, i had 280 fps, when i tuned it, i put it at max dl 32", the speed was about 325-330fps. I spent many time on it. It seems that the increase of speed is exponential with the dl...
