I have a new mattress. Corollary: I have an old mattress.
I looked around for someone to recycle said old mattress, and struck out. Unthrilled with the prospect of this giant thing ending up in a land-fill, I resolved to do the only sensible thing: recycle it myself, DIY style. I mean, what's a mattress? I'm really asking.
Turns out the ratio of foam and upholstery (you know, things that I can't recycle) to steel (thing that I can) was a lot higher than I was expecting. When all was said and done I had "reduced" my mattress into five garbage bags destined for the land-fill, and a few pounds of steel for the recycler. Not a terribly noble result.
Would I do it again? Probably not. But it was kind of fun to see what was inside this thing and I did even salvage some small steel round bar for my own use from the matrix, so it wasn't a complete loss.
In any case, maybe you've got a mattress laying around and you're trying to figure out the best way to dispose of it yourself. Or maybe you're just curious how a mattress goes together (and/or comes apart). Or maybe you just enjoy watching me toil. If any of the above, hopefully this video interests you. Thanks for watching.
