Recycling discarded vape batteries

Lithium vaping batteries (cells) are dangerous (RU-vid has videos showing lithium cells bursting into flames) and toxic, but I’ve found nearly 20 discarded on my walks in the last few days, some run over by vehicles exposing the cells. Lithium cells are now thought to be too dangerous to be sent through the post on their own, so my supply from China has stopped. This video shows how protection circuits have been added to the recovered cells so they can be used. These cells are dangerous so only try this if you know what you are doing. Lithium cells need special charging so they aren't charged over 4.2V and careful discharging so their voltage doesn't drop below ~2.8V. My video "Discarded disposable vapes electronics including charging." shows how the pressure sensor in the vapes I have found contains a chip which I used to control charging lithium cells.

Hi ya :) the "protection" board you mention is actually a pressure sensor. it acts like a On/Off switch. When activated, the switch allows battery to supply juice the heating element (and indicator LED). When no pressure is present, the switch becomes 'open' and therefore breaking the circuit. Almost all disposable vapes have ZERO protection for the battery cell.

I'd love to see more uses for these batteries. I've recently just started using disposables as a way to quit smoking cigarettes and i don't like the idea of throwing these perfectly healthy batteries to landfill. I've been collecting the batteries in a hope of finding a use for them

You can make a larger battery by making a bank out of them, so long as you can set it up so that each battery either has it's own charge circuit or can be charged separately. If you get the rechargeable disposable type they come with their own USB-C charge circuit that can be wired in parallel to your charger, and I'm pretty sure there's a million options for little charge and protection circuits and such on ebay. The biggest thing is making sure each battery is maintained at the same voltage or bad things can happen. And as to uses, I've used them individually for many purposes, I recently used one in a small gas combustion pistol (oxy/acetylene) to power the igniter, then another in a wireless model rocket igniter to power the transmitter. I'm saving up batteries right now from a particular brand of vape (Flume I think? Something like that) that I get regularly from my brother and his friend who use them, they have a larger than usual 1000mAh capacity, I'm making a 400 Volt battery to charge a capacitor bank by wiring roughly 100 of them in series lol, talk about dangerous😅

any idea if u can make a 48v pack from these? ive done a bit of research and found they have a discharge rate of 3c max
@toyhacker4647
@toyhacker4647 2 года назад
You need a 13s battery management board which measures the voltage of each cell please don't attempt this without one I have never gone above 12V but I think the principle is the same. 13 cells connected in series are needed for 48 volts. There are lots of videos on you tube of people building 48V batteries but they tend to use high capacity 18650 cells for bikes and scooters.

@Palmit_
@Palmit_ Год назад
huh? a vague question. typically they wont be discharged beyond 3v. as for durability and life expectancy.. with lithium cells. 500 charges is usually the maximum with degrding performance. optimised perhaps 250 charge/discharge cycles

Sir , how much Current (milliampere) charger best for charging 3.7v 850mah battery same type like your video .. thanks
@toyhacker4647
@toyhacker4647 6 месяцев назад
Best way is to use a commercial charger but I don't know of one for these cells.. As the cell is 850mAh called C) the best rate is to charge at 1/10 C i.e. 85 mA. I would use a 4056 charger board available from e-bay a 10kOhm resistor on the charge pin should give a safe current . There are lots of videos showing how to use these on RU-vid. The electronics in the vape cell protect s it from over charge and discharge so if you are not using the cell with the vape sensor the cell should have added protection

I am trying to recover 500mah lipo battery but voltage is 0.280v it slowly getting up in voltage but I am seeing if I do 300ma it will get warm like 45© I am using 17ma charge currently trying to get it up to 3v so I can test the capacity but I thought if it's free no problem but I am using tp4056, board to get it up in voltage I put 7.5K to get 170ma and tp4056 will do 17 ma when cell under 2.5v the cell not getting warm
@toyhacker4647
@toyhacker4647 8 месяцев назад
I think 0.28v is too low and that even if you charge it it won't hold its charge. How did it get so low? It should have protection system to stop it going below 2v8 or so. I have given up on any cell below 2v8 as they don't seem to hold their charge. Sorry 😔.

I haven't bought any in a while. It depends on the type of battery you wish to make and the types of cells (batteries) you wish to use.. If just a single cell (3V7) then 1s bms (battery management system brings up many results I get 10pcs from china on ebay e.g. 10pcs3.7V 3A BMS at £3.31.
