Recycling & Reusing Resin Saturated IPA | Resin 3D Printing #1

Washing resin prints is a required post processing step in Resin printing but the washing solvent or solution doesn’t last forever and will eventually need to be replaced which can easily get expensive especially for a small business.
So in this video I’m going to explain how I recycle my 99.9% IPA after it has been saturated in resin from all the washes. 99.9% IPA washes resin great but is quite expensive so simply replacing it every time it gets saturated is not only expensive but wasteful.
Recycling & reusing your washing solvent such as my IPA is a great way to not only save money in an expensive hobby like resin printing but also helps out the environment as well!
The steps to recycle IPA is surprisingly easy & effective but isn’t always done because of the mess it can make as well as how tedious or time consuming it can be just to do.
(WARNING)
IPA and other resin washing solvents can emit fumes which can be an irritant so be sure you are wearing proper PPE in the form of eye protection & a respirator while performing this recycling process.
The solvents being recycled are flammable & the vapors emitted are even more so thus great care needs to be taken into consideration before & while attempting this process.

OMG. Why has no one else recommended and explained this as well as you have. Thanks very much.

Methylated Spirits (Denatured Alcohol) should be the main wash. It basically works like turpentine thins out enamel paint. Where as IPA will produce "gum" that will stick to the prints, and you have a massive clean up effort later on. IPA should only be used as a dip wash once the parts come from the Metho wash. Then blow dry the IPA off. Metho is also cheaper than IPA. Methylated Spirits long wash IPA dip wash Blow dry Cure

We need wash and cure stations that recycle their IPA. The entire wash process needs to be optimized for best results with minimal labor and minimum alcohol consumption. I spray the parts and build plate with IPA straight out of the printer and the IPA runoff from that is heavily contaminated with resin so it goes into a tray that is exposed to UV to cure it so the resin can be discarded. Then I do an agitated dunk into the "dirty" IPA tank followed by an agitated dunk in the "clean" IPA tank, and the parts are then sprayed again with new IPA to remove the last of the contaminates from the "clean" tank. That IPA drains into the clean tank. We need wash and cure stations that swirl and cure IPA, then filter the IPA with a large and inexpensive bypass filter media and/or centrifuge.

Great video, i've tried this in the past with little success. but now i have the same wash and cure station i'll have another attempt at it

Just followed this word for word and it worked great but I don`t think I will blend it up next time. If I carefully take the top cured resin off I can save many hours of the IPA settleing.

What do you do with the goo? It's microplastics. How do you safely dispose of it and keep it from getting into the environment?

Cure it and throw it away? Like the rest of resin waste? Not hard to figure out bro

Hello. I am a bit new to 3D printing. You mentioned that you have a pre and post IPA solutions. How would this be implemented in the cleaning process? Print > Pre Wash > Remove Supports > Post Wash?
@MinWin3D
@MinWin3D 9 месяцев назад
So how I do it is: 1) Print 2) Remove supports 3) Pre-wash to remove the bulk of excess resin 4) Post-wash to remove residual resin still on print Reason for the 2 washes is because you won’t get a good wash with saturated IPA as it will leave a film of slick residue on the print. The post-wash is not as dirty so it will be able to clean the resin off more effectively & due to the reduced amount of resin on the part it won’t get dirty as quickly.

Please add something about safety having the UV light on can be extremely dangerous for your eyes and skin which you haven't noted at all. With this video you're not noting that this is a non-standard use of the UV light so the person using it isn't getting the protection of the UV shield.
