Adrian Newey Created A Hypercar - The RB17 Matches Formula 1 Speeds!
How Cosworth's V12 Engine Makes 1,000 HP - • This Brilliant Engine ...
Subscribe to Engineering Explained for more videos! - goo.gl/VZstk7
Red Bull has created a masterpiece of engineering: the RB17! From one of Formula 1's greatest minds, Adrian Newey, comes an all new track car with a 4.5L naturally aspirated V10 engine with a screaming high 15,000 RPM redline. Newey says the track-only hypercar will be capable of lap times as fast as a Formula 1 car, thanks to 1,200 horsepower and extraordinary levels of downforce. The downforce is no surprise, considering Adrian Newey is known for his aerodynamic marvels. In this case? Perhaps the largest diffuser the world has ever seen! The 1,200 horsepower is thanks to a combination of combustion (1,000 horsepower) and electric (200 horsepower). This video dives into the engineering details, including the engine, the hybrid system, the weight, and the aerodynamics.

After five whiteboard videos in a row, I was getting a little bored and changed up the format for this one! Nothing is permanent (the whiteboard always finds a way back), I just enjoy switching it up from time to time! If you enjoyed this video style, you may like a previous video presented in the same manner: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6HlUm7dXq5s.html Always happy to hear feedback! The whole purpose of this car is not in Newey's dream, but a way to spend more money and time in the wind tunnel, CFD and other resources that are very limited in F1. RB was just jealous of Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes for not having the same way to hide some of these costs as these companies.

Even that feat alone was incredibly difficult to achieve, because the modern F1 engine is just way too complicated to get in a road car, that alone swallowed up a lot of budget and development hours, even then, the car today is still somewhat compliant compared to the Valkyrie, which has all the optical functionality of driving and prototype racer on road legal tyres.

One thing to consider about the Valkyrie: the initial intent was to also use it for WEC in the Hypercar category. AM pulled out early from the class as they were complaining that nobody was interested in buying their car for the Hypercar class. Considering that this class was also intended for customer teams as well, this was a big deal. Probably this explains why AM didnt give Adrian Newey carte blanche on the design.

@DuvJones
@DuvJones Месяц назад
No. He, like Aston Martin, idolizes Le Mans. He wants to go, have a design tackle the 24hr race and win in the top class. There are many considerations to the RB17 that are derived from the LMH spec that don't make sense otherwise (like the road tire limit, or the fact it is on a set of Michelin's like every car in the hypercar/GTP class, the fact it is a two-seater), much like the Valkyrie (which is about to have a go at it). I think that part of the reason that he dipped is that he could not convince RB racing to have a go at it (which is fair, endurance racing is a different kind of challenge), on top of the Horner problems. We'll see what the future holds, but I think that he wants his piece of the golden era of sportscars. I would not be shocked if he signed with Aston with that in mind.
@F1ll1nTh3Blanks
@F1ll1nTh3Blanks Месяц назад
@@DuvJones I think this is the real reason he's looking at Aston Martin again. Everyone is yappin about F1 but no one acknowledges that one of the things he loves most is sportscar racing he's always wanted to bring the two worlds together right at the top. If he could make the Valkyrie win Le Man's, guarantee now, he will say one of his biggest achievements is building a road car that wins one of if not the greatest racing spectacle on the planet, even above some of his F1 championships.
@DuvJones
@DuvJones Месяц назад
@@F1ll1nTh3Blanks That is the thing, Hypercar (and IMSA's GTP) class has gotten a real foot hold on anyone watching motorsport since 2023. It just keeps growing. 6:27 lmao i can already hear the american pushrod fanbois curling up in a fetal position chanting "hp per litre doesn't matter. small engine package does" and justifying them worshiping some barely above 400hp 6.2/6.3L engine. i had a whole conversation with these crossplane v8 cultists in the comments of this guy's last video too.

The whole appeal of the LS platform is junkyard affordability and simplicity while making plenty of power for the hobby enthusiast. It's a cheap, simple and easy to work on platform that makes more power than you can use on the street with a chinesium eBay turbo slapped on it. You're missing the point of the application
@Ballacha
@Ballacha Месяц назад
@@pastaalalamborghini in the last video, a bunch of fanbois replied to my comment about hp per litre with "but but the whole point of LS is the small packaging. LS has great packaging size to hp ratio and that's all what matters!". now you are shifting the goal post yet again. lol. my friend it's ok to say you like LS/Hemi etc so you don't want to hear anything bad said about it. you guys really don't need to spend all that effort to keep coming up with new justifications every time someone busts the old justification. is this not tiresome?
@pastaalalamborghini

@@Ballacha now you're just jumping to conclusions that I'm one of those absolutist fan bois. The "best" depends on the application, without context the "best" is a meaningless bench race that no one can possibly win. One of the reasons that people get so passionate about LS and hemi stuff is because we actually own these things in real life. Sure, if I had millions of dollars and infinite time to spend on motorsports, let's play with the cutting edge. But that's not real life. My Silverado makes 630rwhp with a used Whipple from FB marketplace. It's a hilarious amount of power for the street and I've got 11k into the entire vehicle including the cost of the truck itself. We put a turbo K24 in my girls Miata and that thing absolutely rips. So it's kind of an apples to oranges discussion because you're talking about theoretical racing applications in vehicles you'll never own while many people talking about LS stuff are talking about things in their garage.

@@pastaalalamborghini just in case you didn't click my name and check out my convo with those guys in the last video (it might be a phone app only feature) about jason losing his mind over c8 zr1's 1064hp figure, here's a summery. i left a comment saying a lot of consumer engines are near or beating that 193hp/litre figure right out of the factory unmodded. many of them are so cheap that they only cost 5 digits in usd. i have no interest in talking about "theoretical racing application". no idea where you pull that one from. nevertheless it attracted the LS/Hemi loving crowd to whine about using "hp/litre" as a measurement is bad. hence my original comment in this video. there is one person missing the point here and it's not me bud.

@@Ballachafrom someone who hates American cars and low hp per liter engines i admit that American hp is the cheapest, stock or not. Your point is hp per liter but his point is hp per dollar

You might check other sources for the downforce and load limiting. At goodwood I thought they were saying 1,700kg @100mph and load limiting @150mph (ish?), which would imply a much higher load limit. Adrian also mentioned this would be used with a Michelin "confidential tire" which would be a GTP/F1 level tire, but you have the whole ordeal of getting the tire on your car... Michelin basically has to oversee its use and take possession of the tire after you are done (due to being "confidential"). The numbers you quoted were for use with the "standard" Michelin race slick which has a more typical load rating but also better drivability and can be purchased and used like any normal tire.

I love the sound of 15,000 rpm. I used to have a Yamaha R6 and rev it up the way up to 15,000 rpm weekly. The power, speed and sound of it was so amazing to hear. Its an experience I will never feel or drive on a car since i got no money! But for anyone who wants to feel and hear what 15,000 rpm sounds like? Get a sports bike!!!
