Perhaps no creature epitomizes the pine forests of the Southeast as much as the Red-cockaded Woodpecker (Dryobates borealis), or RCW for short.
These ecosystem engineers are unique among North American woodpeckers in that they excavate cavities in LIVING trees. Similar to the gopher tortoise and its burrow, RCW cavities then become homes for all sorts of other creatures. In fact, enough other species rely on the hard work of these birds, that they're considered a keystone species. We saw several of these birds while filming in Alabama and couldn’t pass up the chance to tell you all about them!
