Hi Jen, a go bag is nice to have. Just a small trolley suitable for hand luggage will do it. Clothes for 3 days , 1 pair sneakers, toiletries, and cash for 5 - 7 days in a motel will do it. Specially if you can staying with Family/ Friends you don't need much more. But start with having a practical EDC Kit. Put a rechargeable Flashlight, a Swiss Army Knife with a scissor, a small first Aid kit with some pain relief, a robust Pen and a powerbank in your handbag. That will do it for 90%. For a Red Dawn incident you can start building a BoB ( Bug out Bag )....

Red Dawn came out over a summer while I was in college. When school resumed the very first issue of the student body newspaper had the entire editorial section devoted to articles complaining about this movie as anti-communist propaganda. It was hilarious. So many students were so butthurt over a movie about a fictional Soviet invasion - one that actually portrayed most of the Soviet invaders in a sympathetic light no less - that they were incapable of understanding what the movie was about. The kids, while the ostensible heroes of the movie, became pretty brutal and murderous, committing various war crimes in their guerilla campaign against the invaders. The ordinary Soviet soldiers were shown as being just regular guys, not diabolical monsters. And the Cuban advisor was sympathetic to and understanding of the Wolverines. But to see so many of my fellow students going on in such hysterical, hyperbolic terms about how the Soviets would never do anything like invade the United States less than 10 years after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was enormously entertaining.

From the scene where the Wolverines are listening to Radio Free America, you asked "Are those codes?" Yes. During World War 2, the British would communicate with the French Resistance by use of random-seeming code phrases. Many of them were just random phrases, but the partisans in contact with the British were given specific code phrases to listen for that would corelate with requests/instructions from the Allies. Each group was given different phrases so if one group was infiltrated, the entire system wouldn't collapse. In this specific case, the code phrases being given were the same that were used in 1962's "The Longest Day" to notify the French that the Allies would be invading France in the immediate future. I don't think that's what the code phrases meant in this film, but they were too specific to be anything but a direct reference.

Mr. Teasdale : The Great Huns would always begin with the army spread out in a semi-circle, I would say, about the size of Rhode Island. Then they would ride forward, driving everything before them, beasts, men, even bugs. Now, the ends would kinda close in to form a shrinkin' circle. And everything within that circle panicked to get out. When the Mongols could see each other, they had worked themselves up into a purty good frenzy. Now, when this killing started, it last for days, weeks, even months. And it went on until the young son of the Khan asked his father that the last creature alive - be allowed to go free - the foreshadows the movie and ending where Matt and Jeb were allowed to go free.

This movie is so dated in some ways, but so timeless in other ways. The idea that Russia, Cuba, and Venezuela could war against the US and China makes no sense in 2023. But that's not what the movie's about -- it's the universal desire in every teenager to be heroic in dark times, to fight back against injustice when everyone else has failed, to be called upon to sacrifice and be remembered forever. The Cold War was just the backdrop for what is basically a teen fantasy.

"I grew up on this movie in the 80's when a Soviet led invasion a was still a very real threat." eeeh... realistically no. While a ICBM nuclear strike was a very real threat, a actual land invasion would be totally suicidal for USSR. US navy alone have more (jet) fighters than USSR did have under any period of the cold war, and the air-force more than twice that. Even if they launched a nuclear strike prior to invading, they would get that triple back with sea, air and ICBM. Because USSR logistics was more centralized and the cities was more compact, a nuclear strike would effect USSR more than USA. While both USA and Russia did have SSBN, Nato had the sonar network, and a lot more hunter killers, USSR didn´t. Nato air defense grid was also quite a bit better. While that was mostly theoretical until 1987, a armature pilot flow a private airplane directly into USSR, and landed on the red square. While USSR certainly could invade west Germany and.. well possibly Finland. (while that have been proven hard prior). A mainland invasion from USSR on USA during any part of the cold war is ridicules. A nuclear strike on the other hand, theoretically possible. USA have more armed population, than USSR ever had even population in total. Normally you need a 3 to 1 advantage if you want to attack, and that is if tech is on par.

Yes, on the radio were coded messages to resistance groups. This style of communication was common during WWII where messages were sent out over open radio frequencies, but only the intended recipients knew the meaning of the message designated for them. The one mentioning "John has a long mustache" was a nod to the D-Day invasion when that was one of the coded messages to French resistance groups to begin their assigned pre-invasion sabotage plans. It's not about the kids winning the war, but their job as resistance fighters to hit & run thereby drawing enemy troops and resources from the front lines to deal with them, thus giving the regular US forces more superiority and opportunities to kick the hell out of the enemy...

As at least one other person noted, this movie goes down in history as the first movie to receive a PG-13 rating. This was in response to two other movies that had come out a couple of months earlier, "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and "Gremlins." Both movies caused a bit of a stir as they were pretty scary movies for kids, but everyone thought they weren't so bad that they deserved an R rating. So they quickly came up with a new rating, PG-13 which we have been stuck with ever since. It was actually pretty amazing how quickly it all happened. Less than 3 months after "Gremlins" hit theaters, they had already issued their first PG-13 rating to this film. And yes, both stars for "Dirty Dancing" are in this movie. In fact, because of their time together in filming "Red Dawn," "Dirty Dancing" almost didn't get made, at least not with the same cast. Jennifer Grey could not stand Patrick Swayze, whose behavior on set when they filmed "Red Dawn" had really gotten under her skin. But he pulled her aside during screen testing and apologized to her, and we got a movie that has delighted generations of teenage girls.

And yes Jen, it’s SO smart to have a go bag, there are a lot of survival specialists that have lists of everything you’ll need, I have a military pack/go bag for myself and each of my young daughters that had everything they’d need to survive for a week that they can stretch to 2 and enough food storage and supplies in my cold storage to last a minimum of a year. It’s good to have a canned food storage , candles, matches, strike pins (endless sparks to start fires) water, General medications, Tylenol , rubbing alcohol, solar chargers for cell phones, flashlights etc. it really doesn’t cost much at all and the little Amazon kits you can buy for $20 have most everything you’ll need , just add food and water. Fees nice to know IF something happens ever, me and my girls are ready. It’s worth a small investment , truly.

The movie is a product of its time. It was the 80s, the height of the Cold War. The fear was certainly there. I remember there was even a wargame called, Invasion: America (perhaps even an inspiration for this film?) that was published in 1976. The production did a decent job with recreating Soviet vehicles that US officials wanted to know where they got the hardware.

for your go bag, you need to keep it very light, so I recommend: light and fire: hand and headband flashlight, lighter, matches, candles. water and food: water bottles (about 2 liters in total), energy bars, protein bars. Healt and care: baby wipes (or similar), toillete paper, bar soap, hand towell. For cold climate: warm gloves and hat, wool socks, scarf. Miscellaneous: Duck tape, some type of knife (utility knife, Swiss army knife, multitool, etc.), metal cup, cordage. and a long etc. 🖖

I AM a fan of this movie (and of reflexive comments regarding "go bags" and "prepping" generally)....but, it's probably worth noting (for purposes of perspective), that the Coen Brothers modelled their character of Walter (John Goodman, who brandishes his .45 at a fellow bowler for -- perhaps -- sliding over the foul line while bowling, lol) in The Big Lebowski after their personal take on Red Dawn writer/director John Milius (after having come to know him). He's VERY opinionated, and of the mindset that a Red Dawn might happen tomorrow morning (and thus, probably EVERYBODY should have a .45 and some extra sandwiches in their bowling bags, lol).

When this movie came out, I was a teen in the rural midwest U.S.A. This struck very close to home. The "red scare" and "cold war" constantly loomed in the background, from the previous generation well into the '80s. School kids did duck & cover drills in classrooms to prepare for nuclear attack the same way students today do (ALICE) active shooter drills. It was as common as fire drills and tornado drills where I lived. I was at University when the Berlin Wall was torn down and the "cold war" finally ended.

@maingun07
@maingun07 Год назад
I was a teenager as well and living on the Front Range. Most folks after our generation can't comprehend what living during the Cold War was like. The threat of nuclear war was a very real thing that we had to live with every single day. But nobody could imagine a conventional invasion being a possibility until this movie. My friend and I were in high school just like these kids and we lived just an hour or two away from where this is supposed to take place. This easily could have been my town, my high school, my friends. We had plans for all sorts of trouble, fire, blizzards, tornadoes, nuclear war, but we didn't have a plan for what we would do for an invasion. Three days later, we did.
@maingun07
@maingun07 Год назад
@@charlize1253 I've heard that characterization of this movie before, but as a teenager in the 80's I can tell you that this did not play to any of our "wouldn't it be cool if" scenarios. Quite the contrary. It scared the crap out of us. We had nightmares for weeks after.

@@charlize1253 "makes no sense in 2023" I'll just say expecting anyone or anything to make sense is expecting too much. Years ago they had such a scenario as scare in some political war games. Hearsay is how I got wind but doubt it was military. From how I was told it was all left leaning and the guy playing Trump as a Russian, Cuban, Venezuela dictator. Seems like the same scenario except US becomes China to kill the Nazis which are the other half of America that the commies hate. Trying to look it up, found a NBC report about some book trying to sell that same doomsday scenario that didn't happen. "Peril is a book by American journalists Bob Woodward and Robert Costa" called non-fiction but seems like a fanfic to me. "The conversation between Mark Milley and Chinese general Li Zuocheng is one of the subjects of Peril." I've seen people under oath these days counter what they write in their books all the time so I'd take that with a grain of salt. Trump will launch nukes and end the wold was said before he even started running for office. Even Flint was blamed on him before inauguration. lol

This is a GenX staple. This takes place during the waning days of the Cold War. Back then we had this fear that the Soviets would invade at some point. This movie epitomized the general feeling of the times. The movie was filmed in Las Vegas New Mexico and during the parachute scene one of the stuntmen got in a tree and hung up. He was dressed like the invading soldiers and almost got shot because some of the towns people didn't know what was going on and that a movie was being filmed.

The original cut included a love scene between Lea Thompson’s character and the Air Force Col. (Powers Boothe) but the producers deleted it because of the reaction of some previewers to their age difference. In an LA Times interview, she said she was really disappointed because it was a very tender scene and it was a big reason she accepted the role.

For one of his less known and very underrated roles, check him out in Repo Man from 1984 with Emilio Estevez. Thomas Howell said that Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey did not get along in the making of Red Dawn. He also said there was a love scene written for their characters. Patrick lobbied to not have it in the movie and eventually it was not included. Thomas said it was a five page character development for her, and when she learned of it being scrapped, they didn’t speak to each other during the rest of filming.
