Saw the thumbnail and my sleep deprived aussie brain thought “hammund, richard hammund. Why does he have a gun? Oh its abandoned! And thats some guy whose long dead now!”
No other game in the last 10 years gave me that jaw drop that I got first time booting up RDR2. Thirty minutes in and knew this was a cash cow layup for the next 8 years. Im also terrible at stock trading. Go figure
No matter how many videos that cover this topic i watch, I'm still left completely answerless. I know why Red dead online was practically abandoned, Although it still somehow shocks me. I know GTA online will always bring in more money than RDO, but i still just can't help but feel like rockstar could have done more for it's RDO fanbase. Everytime i play RDO there's a new bug affecting the game, and there's always a mod menu user in every single lobby ruining things and griefing people. It just feels so wrong that they let this happen.
I played RDO for a while, they got more than the price of the game out of me for sure, mastered most if not all profesions or whatever they were but yeah, then there was nothing new for a while, then griefing started. I might could start playing again if they came out with new content. It is a beautiful game to be sure.
Rockstar is pretty content with selling subscribtion and fake money for fake cars to children in GTA V, which also didnt have singleplayer DLC's - cuz they figured embracing "pay to win" (and in their next game possibly ESG score) is the way to go. GTA 6 is already overhyped before the game is anywhere near done - don't be surprised if it drops in a state similar to Cyberpunk and Starfield. Their fans are so dedicated they bought GTA V on 3 generation consoles.
I actually left Rockstar games for wargaming 3 years ago and news flash GTA v online and RDO use peer-to-peer servers meaning you are the server which is why the hacking was so prevalent on PC for both games being sucked into apartments as soon as you walk out of the casino for instance people that own shares of take 2 interactive should have filed suit. Even PC/gamer magazines did articles on the abandonment of RDr2. at least with wargaming you're safe from hackers more so than Rockstar which is why I ran a VPN when I was playing GTA v and Rdr2 online & 2fa I use on my wargaming account also. Hacking on Red Dead was so bad that if you reported a hacker you got reported as the hacker.
Concerning online a bit more information, there is FiveM as well as GTA Online, which is a big Roleplay platform (NoPixel etc). FiveM and RedM were handled by another company (CFX) which was purchased just last year, by Take-Two Interactive. CFX made a generally better online platform that allowed for character customization and a lot more overall content for players to mess around with. Which is probably why CFX was purchased to start integrating GTA VI Online into or what not. The other factor, at least if you are part of RP crowd, available content; GTA has a ton more jobs, vehicles, guns, and things to do/RP than you could ever squeeze out of the wild west.
I literally have the game running minimized right now. I use it as a calming title when I get tired of playing WOWs with potato random teams lol Best game EVER. edit: I should say, single player. RDR2 Online is boring.
The first Red dead redemption online was fun plenty of game modes challenges and unlocks. Some things you needed to spend money on like undead overrun (one of the best zombies multiplayer) you didn't have to spend a penny. Then greed gta5 greed set in
If they just had story mode features they would never have to update, the ability to rob NPCs and stores and banks would be enough, is it that hard to implement that ? It’s already in the game, but because your character has no voice they just disable it so dumb, gta 6 better blow my mind because red dead is so much wasted potential on the online aspect
I’ve been thinking of a good cash cow for rockstar, remaster rdr1 and undead nightmare but also make a rdr1 dlc for rdr2 and make the dlc more appealing by adding missions that explains how John got captured by Ross and forced to work for him after completing them boom rdr1. People will pay for rdr1 remaster and will get people to buy rdr2 for the rdr1 dlc
I can understand not having the dev team to update the online experience but I am surprised they haven't milked the already existing world and story by adding on new smaller chunks of story line for $25 a pop. Seems an easy way to get revenue from what's already developed. Prequels to various different characters that already exist in the game? I can only imagine that lack of resources and not wanting to hire an external team to do it is the reason. Still seems a waste. I enjoyed the game and certainly would have ponied up cash for additional content.
I tried online back in the day after finishing the story, but even before the modding/cheating became so bad you would already have griefers picking on you. With no way to use a true passive mode like in GTAO, I left RDR2 for what it was: Great story mode. Online mode.. not so much. Skip ahead to a few weeks ago. A few friends of mine were trying online but they quickly found out how modders would mess around with them, or even throw them out of lobbies. This made it impossible to get anything done outside of the starting tutorial. We looked for way to get a private lobby like you would do in GTAO, and found a way to use a specific file in your game folder, allowing you to only play with others with that exact same file. They play the game that way now, and I've joined them since then. Its nice to see some content was added to RDO but its nowhere near the amount that GTAO has recieved. A shame, really. Adding to that, the modding/cheating state of GTAO is just as bad. You're better off playing in friends-only lobbies. My main criteria in future Rockstar games like these is that there needs to be a way to avoid public lobbies and just have your own.
Hot take, RDR2 and RDO were a better experience than GTAV. I also stopped playing RDO because I would be stuck with a hacker that had everyone set to explode randomly.
Now with developing information of the gaming industry, it’s most likely that red dead was abandoned because it’s a white male game. GTA being more focused on blacks became the only priority. That’s my opinion and belief.
