RED DEVIL - Transfer to Worcester - Restoration

South African Class 26, No 3450 affectionately known as the Red Devil originally started life as a standard class 25 Non-condenser built by Henschel in 1953, works number 28769.
The class initially suffered a number of teething problems with their connecting rod bearings and valve gear. This lead to a redesign of the cross-heads and the fitment of larger bearings from other manufacturers.
The NCs soon went on to prove themselves as some of South Africa's most capable and reliable mainline steam locomotives with many seeing service well into the early 1990's. They still considered one of the largest non-articulated narrow gauge steam locomotives ever built.
Political motivations, strategic locomotive reserve or the looming oil crisis are a discussion for another time and place. I believe it worth mentioning that the Red Devil existence can almost exclusively be attributed to David Wardale, Livio Porta and the many workshop and footplate personnel that took interest in the project and not necessarily the SAR.
Wardale's work was met with a fair amount of resistance from the SAR hierarchy with many believing the project to be a waste of time and money on traction that they already considered obsolete. Many also believed that steam had reached its full potential and weren't keen to accept that their own work could be improved upon. If it wasn't for Wardales's rather ask for forgiveness than permission approach the project most likely would have seen untimely demise.
With that being said the Red Devil wasn't perfect, prototypes seldom are, but it proved the principles were sound and the hope was that it would lead to the development of entirely new class designed from the ground up deploying those principles.
Despite the time and effort invested in its creation, the Red Devil was simply too complicated and soon fell out of favour with maintenance and footplate crews. Many of which simply refused to learn how to operate it correctly and this quickly lead to a false perception that the locomotive was a poor performer and no better than a standard 25NC.
With Wardale leaving the SAR and nobody to look after it, crews took upon themselves to remove many of the modification some of which were specially manufactured. There are however a number of structural modification that could not be removed and these are still visible on the locomotive today.
Wardale's book is a must-read for any serious enthusiast, if not for the story, read it for the truth. The improvements done during its conversion ultimately lead to 28% coal saving, 30% water saving and a 43% increase in drawbar power. During its peak, the Red Devil had a maximum power output of 5030 hp at 100km/h.
3450 has been in storage for nearly two decades but has now been leased by Ceres Rail Company that have moved the locomotive to Worcester for restoration. Western Cape, South Africa.

Thank-you for all the added information. Until now I thought this was just a standard class 25 painted red for publicity.

She's probably the most advanced steam locomotive in existence. It's a shame she doesn't get out much, but I hope everyone gets to see her steaming soon ☺

Great news. Where will it be restored and how long will it take to finish restoration? Is there much to restore in terms of making up new parts etc. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for watching. The locomotive is being worked on in Worcester and the tender will be going to Voorbaai for restoration. Currently, its being prepared for the hydraulic test and the results will determine the way forward. There are many fittings missing, expecially in the cab and on the mecahnical lubrication system.

I would like to see steam lovers's reaction when they go to our train wreck yards like Voorbaai. Steam locos lying around in disrepair. Will the Quteniqua Choo-choo ever runs again?
@WayneSA85
@WayneSA85 2 года назад
Highly doubt it. The infrastructure there would require a serious cash injection.
@Deontjie

@@WayneSA85 Or a serious anti-corruption injection. Or a management injection?

Glad to see this being restored, Red Devil is one of my favorite foreign locomotives. Any chance of them putting back the improvements it originally had? Hi from the US
@WayneSA85

Thanks for watching. The locomotive will be restored to its current configuration. Full Wardale restoration would be too costly.
@michaelnaisbitt1639

Were the wardale improvements to the loco successful. Approx how much was gained efficiency wise and how come only one loco was so treated?? Overseas inquiry. As a foot note am very happy she will be restored. A magnificent machine all that power on narrow gauge

Could I ask how many improvements the Red Devil retains today? Eg Gas Produced firebox...
@WayneSA85
@WayneSA85 2 года назад
Unfortunately not many. Structural ones that couldn't be removed but the rest are all basically gone. Nothing more than a glorified 25NC now.

@@WayneSA85 It’s such an amazing machine still… and the modifications can still be put back in one day. ‘Dum spiro spero’ While I breathe I hope!

it trigger to made me upset and tearfully to see mighty steam train to wreck and ruin and how dare they done to this beautiful train and it only advanced traction steam train!

It's not the only. There's 232U1 in France (not in steam) and Duke of Gloucester in the UK. Of the three, only 232U1 was used and driven as intended. Swindon (Wiltshire wisdom messed up 71000 by fitting a double chimney that was based on the Dean goods design (instead of the intended double Kylchap)! So she wouldn't steam, and SAR just couldn't be bothered. 71000 has been restored to correct spec and is currently (2018) in major overhaul.)

later i look at restoration video i should not need to upset cos it disassemble for easier transfer than with driver it will very hard to move with it and i am pleased it been completely restored and ready to back on main lane to work with long passage train across the South Africa

Has it been made known if the Wardale modifications will all remain when the engine returns to service?
@WayneSA85
@WayneSA85 6 лет назад
Thanks for watching Steve. Unfortunately, many of Wardale's upgrades were removed long ago. The remaining few will be retained namely the combustion chamber, elements of the lemphor exhaust and the modified valves. The locomotive will be returned to steam in its current configuration.

Hi Josh, I'm a member of Friends of Atlantic Rail. FoAR is a club that provides qualified personnel for operations and basic maintenance at both CRC and AR. We automatically get notified in advance so that the necessary crew can be summoned for the task. CRC post most of their long-distance trips including those to Mosselbay well in advance on their website, www.ceresrail.co.za/. With regards to the Red Devil, the restoration is occurring in Worcester and as I live here as well as being a fitter by trade I'm assisting the restoration team with the odd turning job as they don't readily have access to lathes etc in this area. There's a restoration clip coming soon. Otherwise, I know people in the industry that are kind enough to keep me in the loop.
