Didn't get to watch the whole episode live but this was a great program. I feel very good about my SL purchase knowing all these lens options are available.

The L mount lens options make the Leica SL2 (also SL601) infinitely more practical to purchase because a buyer can get the basic camera/lens package initially. Then fill in with occasional use lenses at a very practical price... The SL2 is so much more user friendly than a Panasonic S1, there is little comparison. But, the Panasonic L mount 20 to 60 is a neat little lens, light, very sharp and cover an excellent range... The Sigma 100 to 400 L-mount OIS is also a very practical lens. I had a Leica 90-280 with my original (601) and sold it along with the camera....It was expensive for occasion use and heavy... the Sigma is tack sharp and covers a bit more range and is much lighter as well as being compact.

Great to know that the lenses need to be updated before use, I did not know this and it would have been no fun out in the field!

Yeah, if you've updated camera firmware, make sure to mount all your lenses one-by-one before heading out. If there is new lens firmware, it will update automatically.

You guys realise that you have to do an episode on R lenses, right? Often overlooked, R lenses are a huge bargain and they work so great on the M or SL system as well as third party cameras like Sony. As much as I love the M lenses I think the R lenses were the very definition of ‘character lenses”.

Im a happy camper! You guys compared the 50-lux with the 50-cron. I was gifted a 601 body and bought the cheapest native lens I could find at the time. Im happy that you guys didn't just rail on the Lux and 100% chose the cron. Ill be honest, my skills are not worthy of my gear but Im happy with what I've got. It is like Im driving a Ferrari 458 but can't get anywhere near maximizing it.

I`m a follower of your "camera talks" and in my opinion the "Advice for manual focusing L mount" is just amazing and works with the TL lenses too. Imagine the possibilities using the Super-Vario-Elmar-TL 11-23 on the SL2 for street photography... thanks a lot!

30:00 This is one of the advantages of the Alliance - that there is a native-protocol option up to 800mm FF from Sigma in the form of the re-designed DN version of the 100-400mm. There are two teleconverters which are compatible with the 100-400mm and the Sigma Art 105mm macro, 1.4x and 2x, and they are exclusive to the L-mount versions of those lenses (i.e. not available in Sony FE.) Panasonic also have two 70-200mm lenses which are "Certified by LEICA", and both compatible with the Lumix 1.4x and 2x tele-converters. So the farthest reach (800mm) comes from the Sigma 'Contemporary' (not 'Art') 5-6.3/100-400mm + 2x, and the brightest 400mm (5.6) comes from the S Pro 2.8/70-200mm + 2x

Hey Citizen. Need a bit of advice. I do portraits mostly and just got the SL2. Should I get the Sigma Art 105mm macro as my first lens. Or bite the money bullet and get a 24-90 or the 75mm (Or 50 1.4 APO)? Thanks.

Leica lenses are 5-6 times more expensive than Sigma, so anyone can see why the L-mount alliance is great advertising for purchasing a Leica sl2.
 The problem is, as stated by a Leica representive, Sigma and Panasonic lenses have different power requierments than Leica, so they won't work the same. Their solution is that "hopefully" a future firmware update will reduce this issue. - "Panasonic and Sigma lenses have different power requirements, and we are working to improve compatibility and will hopefully see improvements after the next firmware update. But right now using Panasonic or Sigma lenses the battery life and camera performance will be different than with Leica L-Mount lenses." - John Kreidler, Product Specialist This is not what they advertise. This is not what the "L-mount Alliance" advertises. Nowhere is is stated that you can use a Sigma lens on the Leica sl2, but if you do, once the battery reaches 75% or lower, you will only be able to shoot at 3 fps instead of what is advertised... Which is the case. - Single Continuous Low Speed (3 fps), Continuous Medium Speed (6 fps), Continuous High Speed (10 fps without AFc/ AE/WB), Continuous Super Speed (20 fps with electr. shutter function without AFc/AE/WB) Mind you, this is a $250 battery, which you need at least 4 of to get through a full day of shooting. This seems like clear case of false advertising to lure consumers into buying an sl2, then having them be forced to buy only Leica lenses if they want to access the full features of their camera. This is not acceptable by any means. The specs should be in clear writting. If this is trully just a limit that can be fixed by a firmware update, it should have been Leica's responsibilitry to not advertise the sl2 as part of the L-Mount Alliance until their firmware made all L-mount lenses fully operational.

41:00 Does the S-SL Adaptor translate the lens signals to L Mount such that any up to date (S1R, FP etc) L Mount camera can also use them, or does it only work with the SL? And does it work with the TL2/CL, or only the SL as the Novoflex adaptors do? And does the SL2 inherit all these compatibilities from the SL?

I'm waiting already 5 years that someone (either Leica, Sigma or Panasonic) will give us a native L-Mount supertelephoto, so a 150-600mm f5.6 lens...why is there none so far, not even announced? And forget for example that mentioned Novoflex adapter for NIKON lenses - I've used that with the 200-500mm f5.6 Nikkor lens (great and fast lens on Nikon bodies) - it's honestly useless.

The reach is available with the teleconverters, but not at 5.6 except perhaps via the MC-21.

@@fellowcitizen The problem with the MC-21 is, plz search the web, it does not work or if it does you do have a very poor AF performance, I mean really bad, even worse than what you get with the 50mm Summilux SL lens, and THAT really is quite slow alreday. ;-)

Hello guys, thank you a lot for the videos. Your content is really great, compehensive and informativ. I own the new SL2-S and I have one TL lense, the f1.4/35mm ASPH. What SL Lense would you pick as the first prime lense: 75mm f2 or 90mm f2? I`m more into portraiture but I also like to do full body shots. Thanky for your help. Cheers
@RedDotForum
@RedDotForum 3 года назад
Given your criteria, I'd suggest the 75 APO-Summicron-SL, as you will have an easier time with looser portrait compositions. The 90 would require you to back up quite a ways from your subject. While I adore the 35 Summilux-TL, and use it as my primary lens on my CL, I don't think this is the best match on an SL2-S. The resulting APS mode crop on the camera will only be 10 MP. Strongly suggest looking at the 35 APO-Summicron, or maybe forgo the 75 and get a 24-90 as your normal lens. This is my go-to for just about everything from landscape to portraits and works amazingly well.

@@RedDotForum Hey, thank you for your reply. This helps a lot. I was also thinking to get rid of my 35mm TL lense as it is not the perfect match for the SL2-S. 75mm APO Summicron seems to be a great starter imo...

Hi David, I’m attending the 2023 Greenland workshop (1st week). For this trip do you have a preference primes vs zooms? Or a mix of both? Thanks, Jay
@RedDotForum
@RedDotForum Год назад
Hey Jay. That's awesome that you're coming to Greenland with us. I definitely prefer zooms for this one. Working off the deck of a moving boat, while photographing another moving boat, can be challenging (and a lot of fun!). Also, changing lenses becomes an art form when surrounded by open water. On our last trip, we didn't even lose a lens cap, but I've heard of lenses just falling to the watery depths.

I’m just curious.... When a sensor increases in resolution, shouldn’t defraction be less of an issue at smaller apertures? Large format cameras use very small apertures and produce excellent images. And tiny smart phone sensors are getting to be high resolution, while still producing sharp results.
@peterreber7671
@peterreber7671 3 года назад
I think he was wrong to say it is not a lens issue. A higher resolution sensor will only show up diffraction more easily.
@detectivejonesw
@detectivejonesw 2 года назад
I believe the larger the format the less diffraction is an issue, but the higher the resolution the more of an issue

I wish Leica would make dedicated 1.4x and 2x extenders in L mount. With IBIS and IS in the 90-280 lens I think this would be perfectly acceptable.

Can you put regular UV filters on these Leica lenses (18-56, etc) or do they have to be special types for the aspherical design?

The lenses don't require any specialized filters, but we do recommend only using the highest quality ones. So, Breakthrough, B+W, or Heliopan would all be good choices. Just stay away from the cheap $20 kind.

Not sure why there isn't more interest around these lenses. The Leica TL range is affordable (by Leica standards) and offers exceptional optical performance. I'm much more inclined to advise using these native AF lenses rather than adapting manual focus M lenses.

Sigma L-mount onto Leica isnt fully compatible! E.g you dont get full af-c tracking with a Sigma 105mm 1.4 On the Leica SL2 because Sigma have effectively got an adapter inside their converted HSM line - However the DN (Mirrorless) gives you full features

@@RedDotForum I hope so too but the good thing is that Sigma are producing DN range which is mirrorless specific which works a treat it's just the lenses from Sigma Like the 85 1.4 hsm , 105 1.4 hsm and 135 1.8 hsm which sigma admittedly said was simple conversions of their DSLR range - hence in little issue with AF-C tracking - AF-S is perfect though.

@RedDotForum
@RedDotForum 3 года назад
If Leica made the 16-35mm an f/2.8-4 rather than an f/3.5-4.5, they would have jumped up to a 95mm filter size and added a fair amount of weight. I'm happy to give up the half a stop for the performance the 16-35 offers, while still fitting into a lens barrel with an 82mm filter thread - the same as the 24-90 and 90-280. One set of filters for all three lenses.
