In my opinion the only good things about this game is the multiplayer with friends, slightly customizable bots, more guns & Sopot’s speech at the main menu. Me & my friend back then thought it was hilarious how Sopot dies halfway thru, but you still always hear his speech at the main menu.
As just a regular FPS fan, I enjoy it for its combat and gameplay. But I understand why PC people that were fans of the first game waited for 2 years for this and were upset by the end result.
I cannot argue with any of the criticisms with Red Faction 2, but it was my entry point into the franchise, which I am tremendously fond of, so it will always have a soft spot in my heart.
I have a theory about Red Faction II, I personally think it was either an expansion considering it's length or it's a rushed game. It came out a year and 3 months after the first game and it was much shorter and linear than its predecessor, I've always seen it as more of an expansion. I'm not gonna hate on RF2 though as it was the first one I played and I enjoyed the betrayal twist the second half of the game and the influence Sopot had even after his death. The speech was eerie and multiplayer was fun too.
I think the engine is different, no? It *feels* so much different. The gunplay in RF1 feels so good. In 2, it's gross. I haven't looked into development too much though. Yeah. I feel like the story could've worked if it were a little different. Thanks
@@PlayStation_Paradise Yeah the engine is definitely very different, I don't think it used the Goldscr like it's predecessor. While I do like both of them, I prefer the first game too, the gunplay, the length and story was so much better and of course it being set on Mars. RFII is like your season of the witch situation really. Then with Guerilla they went back to what made it great. Mars lol. RF2 can take just 4 hours to complete while the first game took me double that. RF2 can be a buggy mess and shooting people can be very temperamental and suck the only thing the sequel mostly got right was the story and the multiplayer.
I think Red Faction 2 is great. It's not perfect, but it's a solid fps. You should have played the console version, as the PC port was really poor. By the way, you didn't cover the multiplayer, which was a big upgrade from RF1's.
I wanna provide a bit of an in depth comment and i hope its not to wall of texty - Re; the voice acting - yeah the Jason & Lance thing - Volition basically as much stated that they were getting in ahead of the times and hollywood game VA was the future - i suppose they were right :P The big difference between RF1 and RF2 (Apparently) is how much more creative freedom volition said they had and how much more fun they had making it - if you watch the secret history of volition video (from just about the end of Descent 3 to RF:A - you get their side of things) - effectively RF2 did luke warm with critics and just went down from there - despite their expectations. The big deal is the level design feels empty - cool game mechanics i guess with just not much heart in its level design - the move to earth and a more "arcadey" look allowed them to get more creative with weapon types - for better or worse. (side note - hope this is ok to you, we're part of the remaining active RF community and we recently held an event concerning RF2 - feel free to check this out ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Sn1HVkLySPo.html ) its a new channel which ive had the pleasure of being a guest on a couple of times - it runs 24/7 WR loops on twitch. In any case on this run event we did a lot of discussion about the gameplay and the level design and volition comments on the game etc (its about 2 hours long sorry for :P ) RF2 indefinitely shelved the RF series (they were in pre-production for RF:3 when THQ said shut it down) so RF:G was years later after some good karma from Saints Row and Licensed Games and/or mobile games. Its kind of unfortunate that RF:G went the way it did because it lead to RF:A which basically repeated history. (a whole other economic story to dive into) RF1 remains to this day as the most economically successful RF title - and its got good reasons for that, in any case its the only one with a still *rather medium to largish* playerbase from around the world supporting it and playing it and modding on it today. So its pretty cool. The port being bad is one of the big issues - essentially the weird mouse issue you had was the port being lazy and not removing the soft aim assist or smoothing from the controller support from the xbox version the game was ported from (we know this cuz we opened up cheat engine and found the Xbox references - not the PS2 which a lot of us thought) Theirs also a gamecube version which for some reason has even higher degradation of assets (we think it was an earlier build sent to the gamecube?? ) But yeah as a console game it actually plays.. okay? its just horrendous on PC due to the clunky port. Obviously the biggest double edged sword for RF2 is the multiplayer - genuine potential just scrapped and ignored - but if it had been a thing it would have fractured what RF1 community had at the time and could have lead to the series being a complete historical talking point by now - so its good in some ways as the RF1 community stayed strong through the years. Bot matches can be fun but with all the different modes it screams "Let me do this with people" - unfortunate. I realise now that is quite a wall of text so apologise :P Ill stop here XD
No worries, I appreciate the long comment! RE2 def has better voice acting, but everything else is worse. It can difficult to pinpoint why, especially when you don't have the technical knowledge, but just playing RF1 and 2 back to back, it's night and day in feel. I've seen that there's still a RF Multiplayer community, and I think that's really cool and comfy.
It defintely won’t red faction 1 but I’m glad I played it. Some levels were really fun imo, and some levels scared me. The plot also may be a possible reality 100 years from now.
Did the PC port ever fix the issue where you have to tell your BIOS to boot your with less RAM than installed in order to get it to run? Who’d have thought too much RAM would be an issue 🤔
not gonna lie. I seeing the subscriber number I didnt expect quality but this was really well made bravo. bough the whole collection out of nostalgia because red faction 1 was a banger and played co-op a bunch with friend. Red Faction 2 dissapointed and I dropped it, steam version of faction 1 is also bugged and fixing seemed to tedious. Is there a reason you havent reviewed guerrilla and armageddon?
I'd recommend checking out smaller channels for game reviews, they actually tend to be more honest, in my experience. The creator doesn't have a million people to p!ss off if he/she has a contrarian opinion, they also tend to address more niche games to which they have a real connection to and it results in more interesting reviews. And quite often, you find yourself a gem like this channel. Many of my trusted reviewers are people I follow since they had sometimes even single digit subscriber count... Check out Arkham666, 600 subs, very good reviews youngster_ryan, 16 subscribers, not TunaCats' level BUT he's talking about games he's truly passionate about and that's refreshing rawhaki, 179 subs, very funny guy, cool reviews When you're looking for game reviews, seriously, go by subscriber count, the lower the better, surprisingly enough.
For Red Faction 1, I would recommend to check out Dash Faction patch. It is really easy to install and it fixes almost all of the compatibility and gameplay related bugs. And also adds a ton of quality of life features like raw mouse input, widescreen resolution with proper FOV, better AF and AA etc etc.
one2101 0 seconds ago What is this guy complaining about? Bro! Red faction for ps2 was awesome! I played the crap out of this game with my kid brother in the early 2ks and had a killer time! Totally awesome game This game was the best and the graphics for that time was great.
I was 12 when RF1 came out and fell in love with it played it all the time with my buddies on multiplayer. Ill never for the life of me understand why they went off Mars in RF2 or why they made the game at all its hot garbage. the Red faction series could have been huge and rivalled Halo and Half life it they did not do what they did.
I played this in high school and I remember not hating it but thinking it was definitely inferior to the first game. IMO it is the low point of the series (At least so far)
First of all, yeah that's pretty true. lol It's kinda charming in it's own bad way. I wish ti was a different, original IP. I would've felt better about it.
So ur saying ds2 is bad an then said u never played a ds game not even the first 1, cus it's confusing?! Dude ds3 is literally a straight line. Man don't hate on games u didn't even try and or know. It's like if I said final fantasy 3 is the worst even tho I didn't play a single one
Lmao. Great description. I love lots of trash games and game modes. No shame in it. I played the multiplayer on console with my brother a ton as a kid.
