And heroin haha. For real though both. Even though you can see the heroin in his eyes and here it in his voice, you can also tell he had a lot of love for this world. He really didn't deserve to go so soon, and definitely not in that way. RIP Hillel
I love how they actually respect black culture when it comes to acknowledging where their sound came from. Being in 2019 and understanding how people see cultural appropriation vs appreciation, I'd say that the RHCP have ALWAYS payed homage and respect to the musicians who influenced them. They include them in their videos, talk about them in their interviews and actually approached them for approval and advice in order to develop their funky sound.
I 100% agree with you that this is how it should be but this isn't something exceptional people like Hendrix have always been respected by anyone who plays guitar.
Wow, the Chili's had real enthusiasm for their idols. These cats were real students of the FUNK, and it showed in their music and their gleeful faces when they observed their funk heroes.
Flea made a good point. The white audience didn't want to hear the funk and the black audience probably wouldn't listen to the rock. I think a lot of funk artists like Parliament, Bootsy Collins, etc. they're really underrated. I know people throw out the word 'underrated' but these guys never get the credit or respect they deserve for the funk. This is also what gave RHCP a unique sound I think, the funk influence is evident in their music and makes them a great band today.
Would've been interesting to see where the band went had Hillel survived.. He seems more mature and more self assured than the other two. He has his own mind about what he likes and doesn't like, for example when Flea makes the Aerosmith comment. You can really see, against his cool demeanor that Anthony and Flea are like children acting out constantly "Am I cool yet?!".. Hillel was the real cool.
Hillel was the leader for sure. My older brother caught them in Daytona when I was too young to go 'barely' and hung out. Good times. He has a pic of him and the band to this day. They are out on the beach all high standing there with solo cups. I mean down high.
Hillel was their best guitar player in all the years, no doubt ... But Fleas comment at the end: " ... to funky for white man and to rocky for black men " . I think both bands, Parliament and the Chilies ran into that problem ...
I love the chillies but this as blatant as a Nirvana interview. Their high. Flea is super groovy at the start like doesn't know if he should talk, Anthony is faster that the roadrunner and Hillel is very deep and sharing. Let's. It all forget the Jack Iron is having a good stretch. I don't think Hillel is the leaders I think he just a very fair and democratic person.
i cant even describe how the chilis make me feel. Their music and story as a band is overpowering. It actually makes my heart heavy because theyre such a beautiful band and i was never part of it. But as the chlis would tell you themselves, you gotta live your own life and live your own funk!
yeah, i love the red hot chili peppers for.. introducing me (and others) to that funk music, now its definitely one of my favourite genres. definitely super glad for them as a whole
word man I feel the same way. I can listen to all there albums as much as I want, but ill never know what it feels like to grow up like, WITH them, as in follow them throughout the years as a part of my life.
Gosh, I love them so. Rest in peace, Hillel. You're always on my mind. Also, on a random side note, my ex was almost named Bootsy at birth after the one and only. 😂😂😂
They didnt sell out. They matured. Their music has changed. A band cant sound the same for 25 years. It gets boring. They arent afraid to try new vibes and ideas. If its the funk you're worried about... its still there. its just more together. Example : Ill Be Your Domino.
there music taste just expanded they didnt forget about funk...the band and frusciante in particular just gained a further appreciation for rock n roll
this is fucking awesome, such young guys, yet so fucking humble. Giving back to those who gave the funk to us all. It's no wonder these guys made it big... they fucking LOVE the music. not trying to be rock stars, just loving the fucking grove.
I feel so bad for Jack. I think he was going through a rough patch at this point, didn't feel like talking I guess. I can relate, but I'm glad he's better now. Plus, that hat is awesome. This is one of my favourite RHCP videos. Their enthusiasm is just amazing. Their music is everything to me and I totally feel like they do when talking about Sly, Bootsy, Funkadelic, etc. Minus the drugs. RIP Hillel. We love you.
The video clip of Bootsy they were watching comes from the tail end of a episode of a TV Show called Rockschool. You can the watch the entire episode here on RU-vid.
hearing hours of John and Josh speak in interviews and singing nice tenor vocals with the chilis and in their solo careers, it's oddly refreshing to hear fucking BASSY Hillel - WAY lower than I pictured - if he had survived and John joined as a second guitarist or something, coulda gotten some kickass vocal harmonies going
This is so cool to watch, but also so scary when you realize this is merely months before Hillel died. R.I.P. Hillel, you started something fucking amazing with these guys!
I wonder how the 1988 chili peppers would react to the music they made in the decades following. Id really like to see their reactions to it, as if they were listening to another great band that inspired them as they are doing here.
@efwb That is a version of "Tear the Roof off the Sucker" Which he co-wrote with George Clinton & Jerome Braley. It is off the the Mothership Connection album.
