@@JonPais That really isn't fair at all. I think its a legitimate concern for many potential users. Their practices are infamously controversial, including their storage devices - which are clearly a scam.

@@JonPais Well. I am not talking about those. I am talking about the Red specific storage media you always had to buy at a 4x market price. It was just a basic SSD drive repacked and overpriced. Maybe you can engage in a civil way with me instead of just throwing out disparaging remarks. It seems you may be a good fit for their business practices indeed. Assuming other companies are able to deal well with their patent expiring in 6 years, their business model will be significantly impacted as everyone else can out innovate them going forward, with as good or better quality and much lower pricing. Frankly a strong case can be made that Red's image advantages are already quite minor relative to much of the competition. Add in their infamous reliability issues, and the clock is ticking. I am sorry if your strong emotional bond to this company makes this difficult to see, but market realities don't really care.

I agree. Sonys autofocus is good. Damn good. Shockingly good. Its on a whole other level. It pretty much puts everyone else in the market to shame. Even canon. Which is also very good. Reds autofocus is still about 10 years behind Sony, but they could close that gap pretty quick if they wanted to. The tech certainly exists. And considering it’s more or less their first attempt at it, it’s a pretty big leap from nothing to this. Especially when you consider that they occupy a cinema market that scoffs at even the idea of autofocus. So in that light, I’m willing to say it’s surprisingly good, but not reliable - yet. The old hats that’s refuse to acknowledge the power of autofocus are going to find themselves behind the wave even on higher productions. The writing is on the wall. Autofocus isn’t going to stop, it’s just going to become more reliable across the board. Eventually it’s going to be adopted into enough higher end productions to make manual pro-focus pullers and anti-autofocus people’s head spin. It’s not a matter of if, but when. Red is smart to see it coming and attempt to keep up.

@@TheJ_G while the movie market is laughing at the idea of autofocus, modern people are laughing at the movie market, jerking off the focus wheel in 2023 is ridiculous. Modern autofocus works without errors even in the dark, and is much faster and more accurate than any person, and most importantly cheaper. Particularly cynical are the prices of film cameras, which are now inferior to mirrorless cameras in almost everything.

When you test it, cover your face or have another face enter the frame! This is wild!

Hey sorry for the delay here. Great questions by the way. The face detect is done through the app not in camera - yet. Not sure what LARS is. Sorry. I shot this video using the RF 15 to 35, but I’m pretty sure any friends that will communicate with the camera will work.

Hi! At this point I don’t know, but I haven’t tried. You can do some manual focus pulls from the app using a virtual wheel which would allow you to pace the focus pull the way you want but I haven’t seen anything for a straight auto focus point

Tbf, he did demonstrate it jumping all over when he slightly moved. Manual would have been better

It's just face detect, and I'd really only trust it for interview type set-ups.

Guess he's asking why did you take the RED over a Sony FX line camera with ProRes RAW over HDMI since they have eye-detect AF and the RED doesn't have it yet. I may know your answer (fellow RED Komodo User here) but he doesn't haha

@@pascalbraendle lots of reasons right Pascal. I already had an R5 and a BMPCC6kPro so had lots of RF and EF glass. RED was the holy grail camera when I first got into cameras, RED raw is F'ing amazing. And if I need super good AF I just use the C70 or R5. I like that it's super tiny and it's built like a GD Tank, and the Red Control App is the best app ever.
