I am a military vet and not into sci-fi and this is the absolute BEST series I have ever read and have followed it religiously since finishing book 5. Book 6 is coming out 5/2/23 read them.
My favourite series of all time, fantasy and science fiction both included. And I agree with the rating order. Fir me, Golden Son is one of the greatest books I have ever read. Period.
I read Red Rising a while ago, and it was awesome. Since then I’ve read 6 books from a different fantasy series (not sci-fi), and I’m jumping back into this series again with Golden Son. My god, I forgot how much I actually loved Pierce Browns writing and this story as a whole.
The pitch everyone gave me for the first book was what kept me from reading it for the longest time, but by the end of the first book I was so fired up to continue. Have to finish Wheel of Time first though so I can finally put it behind me.
Back after finishing Golden Son and My God it’s a thousand times better than Book 1. Incidentally I finished Wheel of Time 8 the day after and the only character I empathize with is the Shadow.
Red Rising is a fkn amazing story. Book 1 is great in its own right but is significantly different then the rest of the series. You notice the incredible growth of the author from book to book. It's kinda amazing.
I agree with the order, I enjoyed the first book but I felt so confused by it that it set me off reading the second one until half a year later. I just finished the second one a few days a go and wow, what a difference. I felt I understood more and the pacing was so much better. I really, really loved it. I definitely would love to go back and re-read the first one, knowing what I know now, and give it another chance.
This dudes rating is atrocious. Every single book in the series has been a 10/10. “Star Wars thing” my ass. What’s wrong with the first book? It didn’t waste any time setting up the world. It was brutal and beautiful. Also, Iron Gold (4) and Dark Age (5) are amazing and the story only gets better as well as the stakes get higher. Where I am, the sixth book comes out in four and a half hours and I am a shameless super fan of this series so I’m absolutely not going to sit here and listen to this apparent aficionado of mediocrity just have the spotlight to talk down his nose at my favorite thing ever. That’s all. 12/10 show me a better sci fi book series in the last 20 years. Dude took his inspiration directly from the greats (Simmons and Herbert), combined all the right elements, and ramped up the action. Read this series. The audiobooks are also fantastically narrated.
While I enjoyed the series it's hardly a literary masterpiece. At its core it's just a male hunger games clone though a well executed one with an interesting world. Thematically it's pretty shallow and most characters aren't super deep. Virginia is meant to be the smartest person in the solar system and yet she gets outmaneuvered and outwitted more than any other character. The second trilogy had the potential to really explore some interesting political questions but fell really flat. Every faction in the republic who's critical of Darrows tyrannical actions or Virginia's policies is secretly being puppeteered by the society instead of being allowed to have legitimate grievances and agency. And don't even get me started on PBs portrayal of quicksilver. I will say though, Lysander is probably the best written sci fi villain I've ever read.
The first book Darrow feels like such a Mary Sue that I found myself rolling my eyes a few times while reading it. I really enjoyed book 2 and 3 much more but I find myself skimming through the carving amd training on rereads.
Golden Son i think is also the best book in the series, it’s got an incredible ending. Morningstar for me dragged to start a bit but it was still solid
This has become,by far, my favorite series I’ve read and Pierce Brown has now become my favorite author. Its as if he writes his books with the goal of perfectly appealing to my tastes. The pacing, the characters, the action, the world building, it’s all fantastic. I’ve felt more emotions while reading this series than I have with any other book, I lost count of how many times I had chills running down my spine from either epic scenes or emotional heartbreak. I’m currently 25% through iron gold and I’m loving it too, even though many people find it the weakest of the series.
I reeeeeallly didn't enjoy the second half of the first book. But I tend to not love school settings or "houses" so that kind of makes sense. I don't even remember my opinion of book two 😬 which is why I haven't bothered reading further.
Really don’t understand why folks shit on the first book so much. I don’t quite know if it’s my favorite, but holy crap does it have so much depth. The character development in that book is nearly unparalleled in the others I think, obviously the other books have a shit ton of character development but that one to me just has soooo much.
Break the chains! I've been describing this series as Star Wars meets the Hunger Games in the new Roman Empire. A friend gave me the first book as just a random recommendation and I got hooked. This really is an underrated franchise that deserves to be a streaming TV series at the very least.
Does anybody have any other book recommendations like this one absolutely love complicated solar system politics sci-fi young person vs establishment type books
I am less than 5mins finished from red rising and to hear that this book dragged the rating down has blown my mind and got me even more ready for what’s to come
It’s an amazing series don’t get me wrong but reading all three in a row kind of ruined it for me. Just felt like I was reading the same couple scenes over and over. It’s a little repetitive
Currently on golden son. 22 years old, only non children’s fantasy book i’ve read is the original dune. fell off of reading for a while but dune brought me back in. this series is so incredible
I listened to the audiobooks and man what a phenomenal series, the one series i dont want to get a film or tv adaption as it would never work, my favourite book series
These books are SOOO hard to get into! The first one is dreadful. And the first six hours of the second were some of the least fun I’ve had with an audio book in years.
Really? These books actually re-vitalized my love of reading and turned out to be my favorite series of all time. Personally I didn't find them hard to get into in the least. The opposite, actually. And I get bored pretty easily. I'm sorry to hear it wasn't like that for you.
Im part way into the second book and i find that the first book had pacing issues. Like there was too much happe ing in bot enough words so much so that i found myself rereading parts.
