In this session we will look at providing a clearer way of understanding ISO with RED DSMC2, RANGER & KOMODO systems.
This session will help you understand what an ISO adjustment is & what means for post, the differences between Native & Base ISO, what is dual-sensitivity, the causes & types of image noise & how this can impact your exposure strategy.
We will also look at the monitoring tools and options in-camera to ensure that you’re properly exposing aesthetic preference. In the final section of the session, we will open up to do a LIVE Q&A with the Solitary Series team to answer any questions.

Red insists they don't do ISO like other cameras But all of this reminds me of shooting on Canon cinema cameras and Black magic, where ISO shifts middle grey in the same way You can raise the ISO for highlight retention or lower the ISO for shadow retention, I learned that with the C100 Or how Sony cine EI handles ISO as "metadata" Had to get use to that on the FS7 How does this different from these other cinema cameras? Am I missing something? I'm just confused because they keep saying they are different when it seems like many other cinema cameras...

Seems like they're describing ISO as a way to trick you into giving you a proper exposure but really the raw monitoring and the geo scopes really tell you where your exposure actually sits. ISO seems kind of pointless.

Thanks guys, this helps me better understand how to leverage iso outside where we cannot fully control the light. Would love a talk on which types of ND’s you all use and the situations you used them in. Makes me think of how Zack shot Army of the dead wide open throughout the production for a movie set in LV. Lots of strategizing and trial and error. Keep these coming!

Thanks for the presentation. What i got from this video is that, to maintain highlight, you should increase the iso. Am I a clown for understanding this logic?

Hi guys, new red komodo owner. I have looked online and couldn’t really find an answer to this question. What is the difference in changing exposure adjust setting and changing the iso? I find myself wanting to look at a darker exposure creatively when shooting and end up with too much noise in the footage afterwards. Is it right use, to maybe choose and set an -2.000 on the exposure adjust to give me the right look while monitoring while maintaining a healthy brighter raw data? Or could i simply go towards a lower iso value is there any difference? Thanks guys, love your work

By exposure adjust you mean shutter and aperture?

I know that I may be coming late to this party but is this discussion trying to explain something complicated and counter intuitive or is it stating the absolute bleeding obvious. The way that the presenters talk is confusing. They seem to adopt the "keynote" form of delivery where everything that is being said is made to sound important. This isn't how normal people speak and to explain something like this is completely unhelpful let alone confusing and seemingly contradictory between each speaker as they try to chip in. As far as I can understand they are basically saying that ISO is purely metadata and doesn't affect the recorded image on the sensor. Great so the camera can't help you like in deiferent lighting set ups by having dual native ISOs and different gain stages for different photon levels. ??? What it is then? More a moveable monitoring tool. Big wow??? In much the same way that choosing a slower film stock means accepting that for a given scene and to protect the shadows you'll need more light hitting the film, (wider aperture, shutter angle etc) then its absolutely obvious that if you're shooting in bright daylight then your starting point is to get the NDs out. Are they saying that selecting the counter intuitive higher ISO in bright light somehow affects the DR of the sensor or log curve??? If not then is it just a tool to encourage the operator to get out the ND??? Effectively nothing more the a camera LUT that is adjustable along an ISO scale??? So what is the big news? Does adjusting the camera iso help in any way other than in terms of output monitoring eg like a moving LUT????? I am still completely confused as to whether these guys are trying to tell us anything new or not. Sorry but I have found this video super unhelpful and even more confusing. It feels like they are complicating something that is incredible simple or trying to make something sound incredibly simple that is in fact completely counter intuitive and complicated.????? I appreciate the effort but I still don't get it. Thx

Yea I agree. To me it seems like their wanting to tell a story about using ISO to control highlight retention. But what I don’t get is , if you can just change the iso in camera, then why not expose at a higher iso, then monitor at the iso that looks right to the eye and of course consider the raw tools in cam. For example seemingly over expose in iso 800 via histogram, but watch goal posts then check iso at lower value. If you like it press record. The iso doesn’t matter, seems like only the amount of light hitting the sensor. I’m a dragon x owner.

@@Soundslikeden I agree. I’m also interested to know how much pre edit pre post processing Red expect to be done to the meta data using eg redcine x pro and in fact what needs to be printed to use nles that partially read the metadata. Like chroma noise reduction?? Sure there’s a check box in resolve but how is that interacting with resolves own Nr or neat video or anything else. Same goes for sharpening. Are the fx sharpening and noise reduction tools in redcine x pro optimised in any way for the red raw?? Since shooting raw means no in camera processing then where is the best place to address sharpening and noise?? Any thoughts let me know. Thx K

James you said you like to shoot in 1280 but I thought the native isos were 800 and 3200? Does it really matter what iso you shoot in?
@cubul32
@cubul32 Год назад
The ISO doesn't matter. Unlike other cameras the ISO won't modify the dynamic range. So whatever ISO you choose should be ok. The choice for 800 is for flex in post to go up and down a few stops if you need it. I saw him in Montreal at a presentation. James said that you should pick the ideal iso that you want when you shoot and try to stick with it. Changing it in post will introduce more noise. I hope this helps, I'm a beginner as well.

any chance will have 4k 100fps on the komodo with an upgrade of the firmware ??
