Great movie I grew up watching this movie I was born in 1983 had a massive crush on red sonja and the actress who plays the queen and her lady assistant
She was actually good with that sword and a bit of an underrated action star from back when women doing it was rare. I used to realy love this film. Havent seen it in 30 years
It was too censored, because they were trying to appeal to kids too much. Trying to walk that line between Adult and Child. By Todays standards it's a hardcore Rated R, but back then? Tame as Fuuuuu, Same mistake Conan the Destroyer made. I Still Love this movie dearly though! ♥
I've never seen the movie or read the books but tbh the bad reviews are confusing me too 🤣 I know nothing about the source material so I can totally understand the bad reviews if it's linked to not sticking to the original story. But other than that I've heard that it was an overall terrible movie and honestly it looks pretty cool to me.
Red Sonja wasn't a Bad movie but you also have to have a thing for this fantasy/middleage/barbarian genre. I do believe ennio morricones soundtrack played a huge part in making this movie a hidden cult movie. It was perfect I also like the idea of a movie remake or perhaps a good series. A good writer could pull it off.
The plot was not terrible, but the script was irredeemable. The dialogue sounds like what you might hear from an 8-year-old boy playing with action figures. It's that bad. I did enjoy this movie, though. Its "badness" is its own appeal.
Actually Red Sonja is Conan III. Arnie signed a three-picture deal with Dino de Laurentis to do three Conan movies but the ever- changing copyright situation with Robert E. Howard's estate prohibited Arnie from appearing as Conan. So his character was changed to Kalidor. Overall the movie was disappointing but there were a few exciting scenes. This copyright / ownership mess has gone on for 35 years now and I guess that while there may be a Conan TV show, Conan movies are just about done. In any case, science fiction has far outstripped sword & sorcery in the last 20 years, so that's where the money is now.
Disappointing is an understatement compared to today's sci-fi movies, even in 1985, it did horrible at the box office. The budget was 15 million, and the movies gross was only 6.9 million smh. Swords and sorcery still has a place in television/movies. Game of Thrones is a prime example of that....with the right story, a sword and a little magic can still be a successful hit on screen.
@@curcumin417 Again, #epicfantasy rather than sword & sorcery. The new D&D movie 🎥 being released this year is closer to the latter, I think, but obviously I've not seen it yet...
I love this movie so much! I watch this movie back in 80s. I was big fan of Arnold Schwarzenegger and that kid Ernie Reyes Jr. Red Sonja was awesome n I was big fan of hers even when she play in cobra and also in rocky IV.
Hey Red Sonja was my hero when I was a kid. (Still is in ways) Always got goosebumps when she challenged Gedren. Wonder if Xena could stand toe to toe with her? I mean a sword-arm with no equal against warrior princess.
Red Sonja is too powerful she was never defeated by any male guy except for the dark magic of kulan Gath. Xena is also powerful but she don't stand a chance against Sonja. I remember there was online poll in the past which had the title who is more Powerful amongst Red Sonja and Wonderwoman. They both were tied on that title!
Xena head to head with Red Sonja is not exactly equal because they come from two different fighting styles and weapons. Remember Xena has that circle boomerang 🪃 and does a lot of body fighting. Sonja is purely sword fighting.
@@mehulrathod7739 Wonder-woman has a lasso of truth and I have never seen her fight with a sword 🗡️. You want a real match up, then let us try matching Red Sonja to Sherra. I had her and other women characters from that TV show on my lunch box as a child. Sherra fights with a sword and could make a proper opponent. ⚔️
@@sheilaspastelrainbowvision The Chakram was an old Indian weapon and was part of a set would have been cool to see Xena find the set but Red Sonja would defeat Xena at least at first but Xena learns from her mistakes she could defeat her eventually.
I loved watching this movie with ny Grandma!!! I still ❤ it! Girl power! Now I understand where some of my inspiration came from when I joined the Army! Now I'm on the verge of retiring from the Army, and the algorithm brought me here! Funny how life works! 😋
Saw first O.G. Conan recently. Epic. How did I miss that one as an 80s child. Probably cause I was heavily into big guns and shit with well you know G.I. Joe and Transformers and what not. Gotta luv the 80s

This was a really great movie. Really bothered me when they threw the surviving priestesses into the pit and dropped the key to open it in with them. Listening to their cries as they realized what was happening and then, suddenly, silenced as it closed.
In original story, it WAS Conan, and they didn't use the Conan name for the character only because of rights issues (Universal held rights to Conan, and Red Sonya was made by Famous Films). as a child you were right
@@tigarciarts3739 See I knew there was a funny thing going on there and especially the name 'Kaldor' or.. Ahem 'Conan' Your explanation had my eyes lit, thanks a lot :)
Aww, but you missed all the sarcasm parts like when Sonja tells the prince's servant to put the brat over his knee. Oh and the beginning with the power of the talisman only being touchable by women.
The way the Queen has become insane because of what red Sonja did to her face, blinded her and sent her on a quest to rule the world through destruction. Like the queen the abuse that I suffered as a child blinded me so that I could not see and sent me on a mad quest to prove to my father that I was not like those who I made a vow on Hancock Street that I would never be like them. But I did become like them and I failed my parents. I believe that it led to the deferment of my hope to continue to fight. So, I lost the will to fight in the battle because of the reason why I fought in the beginning was no longer there and I did not have another goal that fit into the mindset that created my personality until now.
I wished they make a new Red Sonja movie starring antje traue as sonja. Also I would die to see Red Sonja as a guest dlc character in Mortal Kombat game in the future!
“Red Sonja is the worst film I have ever made. Now I tell my kids that, if they get out of line, they'll be forced to watch Red Sonja ten times in a row. It must be working, because I've never had much trouble with any of them.” - Arnold Schwarzenegger
@@zefallafez, Mr. Schwarzenegger is a thespian, every day Robert De Niro and Gary Oldman wake up and wish they could act as great as Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Actors Studio should be renamed The Arnold Schwarzenegger School Of Acting.
@@TheIkaika777 I agree wholeheartedly! As I was saying, his worst films aren't far away from his great films in quality. I think the United Staes should change its name to Schwarzland.
@@zefallafez, Although that’s a great idea the United States has already changed its name to Seagal-Land. It’s Steven’s world, we are just lucky to live in it.
@@TheIkaika777 I didn't know that! We are truly blessed just to live in the same universe as Sir Seagal. The fact we live in the same solar system, and on the same planet, and the same country is just too much to comprehend!
Going from the epicness and excellence of the 1982 Conan the Barbarian to this? Man, what a downfall. If Arnie doesn't like it, that should be taken as a warning.
Here’s what Arnold Schwarzenegger said about Red Sonja: "It's the worst film I have ever made." He joked, "Now I tell my kids that, if they get out of line, they'll be forced to watch Red Sonja ten times in a row. It must be working, because I've never had much trouble with any of them."
As a kid, I thought this was the sequel to Conan the Barbarian. I kinda wish it had been... At any rate, I've fully convinced myself that Callidor is just Conan operating under an alias for whatever reason.
Thats Ernie Reyes Jr. When he was still a little kid,The one who did all the high flying, and rope kicking in "The Rundown" starring Dwayne the Rock Johnson
in this movie what happened to the giant spider which guarded the throne of the evil queen? when red sonja arrives there it isn't there anymore - and the queen's handmaiden just runs off when sonja arrives and we don't see her again either.
0:0:06 Does anyone else notice that the sounds made by Arnold correspond almost exactly to the sounds in the old computer game "Barbarian" on the Amiga? 🤣 Just compare: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h5zBNNLSqbQ.html
there was some dispute between the original movie producers over the conan ownership rights or something after the first movie came out - so arnie was conan again really in this movie too (made by one set of the original conan producers) but with enough changes to make it legally ok as regards the rights dispute (he had a different name etc) - it was basically a way for one set of the original movie producers to appeal to the conan movie audience without getting sued by the other conan movie producers.
Actually this movie was supposed to be Conan III but there was a copyright fight between the studio and Robert E. Howard's estate forcing the name change from Conan to Kalidor. Sandahl Bergman was supposed to be a heroine but she insisted on being a villainess. It was at this time that Nielson married Sylvester Stallone. Some scenes were interesting and the music was great but overall the movie was a dud.
it sort of was really - see the thread comments about the copyright dispute (one side wanted to make the movie but the others didn't so the willing side went ahead anyway but made changes over arnie's name in it etc so they wouldn't get sued).
