When I first read Storm I was so enthralled that I couldn’t put it down….I could imagine how terrifying this would be in real life and being a USAF vet( I was stationed at Bitburg AFB circa 73-75 )I was familiar with all the aircraft involved including the Soviet ones…Tom Clancy is (in my opinion)was the best techno thriller writer of his day !

When I first read it ,I was attending Navy CICO school in Dam Neck VA. The Navy parts of the story really hit it accurately. (I was going to be the CICO on a Perry class FFG). I had bought the book at a local bookstore, went to dinner, got back to my quarters at 1900, and started reading. I finished it at about 0300 the next morning - and I had class to goto !

This is so weird. I served in the US NAVY at Keflavik during the Cold War, and will tell you that Tom Clancy knew just enough to make an exciting story for his civilian readers. The reality was, for us who were there, so...oooo much more interesting. We had regular interactions with the Soviet Air Force & Navy. But it was us, NATO, that held the ground & air. And multiple radar early warning systems throughout the island would have made Clancy's senario unlikely.

I remember reading this book in the 80s, right after reading Hunt for Red October. This chapter always stood out to me, especially the sentence where they realize it's the NY ANG Phantoms that are rolling in on the attack. A few years after that I went to an airshow at Macguire AFB in New Jersey. Me and brother got there a bit late and had to park on the road and walk a long way in, past the end of the runway. ANG Phantoms were making mock bomb runs directly over our heads, screaming in just above the treetops in pairs, simulating weapons release, and lighting up their burners. I will never forget the sense of power we were experiencing, those Phantoms were like flying freight locomotives, shaking the ground as they went by, and I swear the afterburners made a low thumping noise as they lit up. I think we got a way better show then the people in the stands, who had to watch from far away to the side.
@kurtwk
@kurtwk 2 года назад
I’m pretty sure I had that happen to me around 1988 in a remote area in Missouri for a camping trip. MO ANG F4s always flew in groups of 4…and exactly 4 of them screamed in at tree top level over us and sharply climbed up with burners on….. it’s something I’ll never forget.

Remember being around 5 y/o going up to a guard standing by a perimeter setup around a B-52. I asked him what would happen if I crossed the roped off section. Without batting an eye he replied with a smile "Well I'd shoot you..". Put a smile on my fathers face as well ☺ (who was a former member of the CAP & US Navy draftee).

Around 11:45 when the B-52s drop bombs reminds me of when I was stationed at CFB Cold Lake. I often worked at the Jimmy Lake Range and once in awhile there would be some of these B-52s dropping 5000 & 10000 pound bombs at one of the many sites on range. The sites were all at least a mile away and each time a bomb landed it shook our building. If we were outside we could feel the impact first through the air and then through our feet. One of the things Clancy gets wrong is the tactics of the B-52s. If the B-52s were going for a low-level daylight raid, they most likely would have used cruise missiles from a distance in order to stay out of AA fire. If they were going to drop iron bombs they would have attacked at night from medium-high altitude in order to reduce the threat of interception and optical detection, along with using their ECM gear to greatly reduce the SAM threat.

Russia today of course did not really advance its doctrine or it's tech all that much since the 90s. They have some good systems. Kalibr is actually a very good missile as an example. And their frigates and smaller boats seem to be halfway capable, although they did a terrible job maintaining the larger soviet era ships like Moskva. The maintenance report for Moskva reads like a horror story. S300 and S400 anti air systems are actually quite good, but I think Russia itself is not very well trained on their own systems and therefore don't get much out of it. Ukraine has only S300, yet it is using it effectively to shoot down Russian planes and cruise missiles to great effect. And the Tor and Pantsir systems seem to be pretty good as well, but Russia. So I am not so sure Russian AA is a bad system, rather a bad defense doctrine for Russian forces. Although it doesn't help against stealth aircraft like F-35, so it isn't cutting edge. Good enough for most planes in the world though. But much of the "Feared' russian hardware is indeed vaporware. T-14 Armata tank and SU-57 plane is basically prototype concept that they only have a few of, and they aren't that impressive. SU-57 has a squadron of 5 operational airframes with another 6 prototype airframes. And its vastly inferior in stealth to an F-35, so it's not that dangerous. T-14 only has about 10-20 prototype elements, and we know they have teething issues. Russia can't build them in large numbers and its debatable if it is actually superior to any tank the US has. It is also a VERY expensive tank, and it does have some interesting features that I think might be copied and implemented better in future western designs. Russia's curse is that they CAN design great systems, but never to scale, and is often stolen and made far better by it's enemies.

Why were fighter escorts not already accompanying them? (I haven't read the book, I plan to soon, but did they ever state a reason)
@BobChanel
@BobChanel 2 года назад
My best analysis of the situation was they were referring to the F-4's that had done the SEAD the "escorts". That is the only time he mentions the bombers had escorts and had no word of another aircraft that were involved with that strike package. I think he was conveying ignorance on the side of NATO/US. Also cant not recommend the book enough. Ive read it a few times and have listened to the audio book about a dozen times now.

As mentioned at the beginning of the video, the Americans didn't think there were any Soviet fighters on the island yet. In the book, US intelligence assets on the island (US troops who had avoided capture when the Soviets had captured Iceland) reported the fighters, but the report was deemed "unreliable".

I got the board games for Red Storm rising and The Hunt For Red October for Christmas back in the 80’s. Once a year buddy and I will play the World War III scenario by combining both games. He’s always the Warsaw Pact and I’m always NATO. For some reason he always says the commander of the Red Navy is Admiral Igor Bullshitsky.

And to think, they had been told about the fighters. But the possibility of fighters was disregarded by men who "knew better" and besides. The report came from a weather man and a couple of jarheads. Who probably couldn't tell a MiG from a Backfire.

It’s pretty much history now. Read it back around 1990-92, when it was current, and was impressed. But warfare, aerial warfare in particular, has changed a lot over the last 30 years.
@АлексейКуцый-э2о
@АлексейКуцый-э2о
и где истребители прикрытия бомбардировщиков? которые должны бороться с Су27

to be fair, A B-52 is easy bait for any fighter aircraft. It is a big, slow bomber that should never fly in an area with significant anti air systems or fighters.

I have a few issues with this book, though it's a while since I read it. For one, it seemed to concentrate way too much on the naval and air battles, with very little happening on the land - little mention of tank battles for example, which is a big omission. Most of the invasion occured over land afterall.
