The one reason I went with two Deere 70 machines vs two 7120 combines was mostly dealer support in the end. Everyone in my family was open to an IH, but in the end it fell threw. A huge deal breaker for us was the wiring and the engine bay access. As you mentioned in the video the case would get filthy especially in dirty dry conditions such as we face in Texas. The Deere’s are always clean, though it is kind of a hassle to push up on that lever, pull out the ladder and then drop it compared to the case. I feel that both brands in the engine bay have easy access to most of the day to day things. Now before I go any farther I don’t know to much about these IH machines except for running some older machines so you could very well say I am biased. That was another reason we went to Deere again was because we were comfortable with it and someone who is comfortable with an IH can understand that. It’s not just which brand is better in some things or dealer support, but also how much you know about the machine. For an example, my father can practically tear apart a Deere and rebuild it, but not so easily with an IH. In the end it all boils down to three things, improvements made, dealer support, comfort.

I went and looked at a gleaner finally bc everyone claims they are so wonderful... after 45 mins of looking at it, i still couldn't figure out whats so good about them ... every brand has a pro or con - nothing on the gleaner seemed to stand out as an engineering marvel to me
@SilverGleaner
@SilverGleaner 3 года назад
@@Blackearthexcavationandtiling Run one and you'll see. Takes a lot less power to run the Gleaner because the rotor sits crosswise and an amazing ability to clean grain using accelerator rolls and two stage cleaning system which also makes the Gleaner hillside capable without expensive hillside components being added. There is only one gear box to worry about. All done with a combine 15,000 pounds lighter than the Deere. S98 vs S780. I can pick some thing about Gleaner that could have been better but that isn't my goal right now as I hoover towards the silver side just a little too much. ;) I'm not sure about the latest Deeres and CaseIH machines but at least 30 years ago going up to about 15 years ago (about when I stopped paying attention to the red and green) Gleaner had a thicker frame, Chrome alloy sprockets in key areas, 1/4" thicker auger flighting in key areas, chrome alloy rotor bars and vanes, kevlar belts when everyone else had just belts and o-ring feeder chains. That all goes back to the late 80's and early 90's. Not to mention the Gleaners back then had bigger grain bins 315 bu in an N7. My 1981 L2 hold 200 bu and my 1996 R52 holds 245 bu with a factory bin. If you go back further Gleaner had, automatic flip up grain bin extensions that tipped up as they filled with grain, grain loss monitors, bin full alarm, auto reel speed, torque sensing drives, hydraulic variable speed corn head, rock protection (and it was a fool proof system), electro-hydraulic controls, high velocity cross-flow cleaning fan, and a 12 row capable combine all before anyone else. And I'm sure I missed a few things. When I was growing up Gleaner was king and sold more combines in the US than anyone else and Gleaners were considered the cadillac of combines. Too bad they dumped their farm profits of the 70's into loser divisions like mining equipment, navy ship engines, hydro-electric dam generators and turbines. All industries ruined by liberals and turned Allis-Chalmers into a heap that the farm crisis of the 80's finished off and then came the German occupation that stole away their market share which AGCO never gained back in the US to this day. OK I think I wrote enough for a book.

Massey went down that road and found that for some things the expense to build and to replace worn hydraulic motors and pumps was too much for the customer to bear. As you said, you can speck combines massively now so it’s hard to compare. However, I would say a redekop chopper on the 8240 would completely revolutionise that part of the machine. Even chop for the width of the header, you can speck it if you want a wide kit for bigger headers, and a much finer chop too. As for the beater shafts slipping in the feeder, I’d ask your dealer to have a look at the beater gearbox, they’re rather common to wear the splines away on the stub shafts In the box, ultimately this wears the splines on the beaters. This is most probably the reason for slip. Expensive repair but definitely worth doing, partly because it’ll increase efficiency but mainly because you don’t want to be losing drive mid way through harvest! If you’re looking to increase straw capacity when rowing up, for bales etc, then I’d suggest changing your rasp bars to 28mm on the whole length of the rotor. It won’t revolutionise the straw but certainly will help.

Actually tenneco who owned J.I. Case. Purchased International Harvester's ag division. 2 great farm equipment companies came together and continued to produce equipment under a combined name. Then tenneco folded in the early 2000's for reasons I never heard and the ag equipment was sold to fiat agri. But the basics of that red combine and the green one for that matter were invented by international harvester and introduced by the same in 1978. Which makes it an international. Oh and I wouldn't call them john deere wagner's. I'd call them wagner's which is what they are.

@Kelly Giesbrecht Technically, you're right, but it is still Case-I.H. J.I. Case did make combines and they were good machines, too, but for whatever reason, the company just quit building them in 1970. Axial-Flows are adopted by Case, but their heritage is still 100 percent, International harvester. Growing like a graft, onto financially strong root stock. The scion will still bear I.H. fruit.
@combinelover8988

@@rivervalleyfarm482, true on Tenneco, which has not actually folded or gone under, but has remodeled itself. The refineries and gas stations are gone. Tenneco, bought remaining shares of J.I. Case, in early 1968. They sold all of Case's ag division to another firm, which consolidated it with New Holland, back around 1994 or so. I've forgotten the exact date and the name of this firm. However, Tenneco remains a 9 billion dollar corporation, and is tied strongly to the Kern County Land Company of California, a company steeped in scandals from Day One. I'm glad the farm equipment is no longer married to Kern County Land Co, which once owned Tenneco, and maybe still does.

Both combines have technologies that allow for greater control while working the fields. Personally, if a farmer is going to purchase or lease one or the other, it should be based upon that machines abilities to remain technologically competitive. Its kind of like buying a car in 2019. After awhile, newer more reliable technologies come out and your 2019 car is no longer so up to date. Of course, cars are not combines, but in terms of practical applications, combines must be adaptable as the years go by. Both machines are 2015's. This means that the 2019/ 2020 tech applied to to days combines have made them vastly superior. Again, only in technology. The machines themselves are virtually identical. Bottom line, the farmer must decide which combine will serve his needs better over a specified period of time. Lots of research should be done before investing in any combine, to determine its overall reliability. JR

I am CaseIH fan but I like plastic panels around rotor n ladder to open deck and assess in around engine bay with CaseIH. There two things I hate with JD is side panel opens up with poor design ladder and augers in bottom of grain tank, the augers don’t shift grain across there’s too much gap. The red is being ruined by foreign owners IMO, just like Silver even though silver is technically based in the US it is mostly run by Germans and I think French ever since a plane crash a dozen years ago or more killed some top leadership flying over Europe somewhere. The orange tractors replaced by Massey red that no one, at least in my area, wants and their attempts to get rid of Gleaner over the years but since Gleaners outsold Massey And Challenger about 11 to 1 they were forced to stay with Gleaner. European leadership for some reason doesn't like to sell what American farmers want. Deere seems always steady, even with a hiccup here and there with some bad products they always pull through. I think it's because the Deere family is still very involved and don't always aim to only please stock holders.

A lot of green guys up this way run the Case combines. Have to be a big reason for the investment. I find Deere are behind other companies they tend to stay old ways till they have to change. They trashed the rotor combines for years and they were the last to switch. .Some of the hay stuff is Kuhn but higher priced. I tried buying a round baler from them it new but no factory warranty because dealer had bought it to make their sales for the year look good. They said they would cover any issues but that wasn't good enough for me spending 50 000. I find if I want to buy Deere stuff it better to buy from another brand dealer used.
