Recently a man called me and asked if I could record this song for him, so he could give it to his wife for her birthday. Apparently they had been searching for a recording of the song for years, but couldn't find one anywhere. This intrigued me, as I was very familiar with the tune, but had never heard the words sung before. So I looked it up on You Tube to see if anyone had done a vocal arrangement of it. I could not find one. So I told him I would do it. And here it is!
capo 4
Intro G C G C G Em A7 D7 G
There (G)once was an Indian maid,
A (C)shy little prairie (G)maid,
Who (C)sang a lay, a (G)love song (Em)gay,
As (A7)on the plain she'd (D7)while away the day;
She (G)loved a warrior bold,
This (C)shy little maid of (G)old,
But (C)brave and gay, he (G)rode one (Em)day
To (A7)battle (D7)far a(G)way.
Now, the (C)moon shines tonight on pretty (G)Red Wing
The breeze is (D7)sighing, the night bird's (G)crying,
For a(C)far 'neath his star her brave is (G)sleeping,
While Red Wing's (D7)weeping her heart a(G)way.
She (G)watched for him day and night,
She (C)kept all the campfires (G)bright,
And (C)under the sky, each (G)night she would (Em)lie,
And (A7)dream about his (D7)coming by and by;
But (G)when all the braves returned,
The (C)heart of Red Wing (G)yearned,
For (C)far, far away, her (G)warrior (Em)gay,
Fell (A7)bravely (D7)in the (G)fray.

My hair is streaked with gray now ... but I can still remember my grandmother singing this song to me as a lullaby when I was a tiny tot. I could not have been older than three or four, so the year would have been about 1970. One of my very earliest and fondest memories. Thanks for posting the video, Jack.

One of my best childhood summers, we were headed out to Ruidoso, NM, with our horses. My grandparents were along, and Granddaddy brought his “French harp”..he played “You are My Sunshine”, “Turkey in the Straw”, “No Place like Home”, and others, but “Redwing” was my favorite..the year was 1967; I was seven, too. No one left now but my brother and me, but I request this song whenever a string, accordion, or harmonica player is near, and they all usually know it. ❤️ Thanks, Jack, for the memories.

@bandurasbox I am Scottish and was serving in the British Army. The fighting with the Chinese and North Koreans had become static along the 38th Parallel and we began to receive some home comforts such as a temporary canteen. One of our group was a young Welsh cook who had a wonderful voice and sometimes he would spontaneously start singing Red Wing. It is such a wonderful song AND we picked up the lyrics fairly readily and it became our standard chorus. Thanks for posting.

My God! A man who gave me my first real job used to hum this, and occasionally sing some of the lyrics. For years, I despaired ever finding out what the name of the song was. But, as I have many times, I tried googling what lyrics I could remember, and lo! Here it is! Thanks so much for this! There was only one minor change in the lyrics. The way he sung it was; "and far away, her warrior gay had fallen bravely, fighting in the fray." It kind of flows more mellifluously that way, but might just be his quirky version. His name was Glen Morine from Marengo, Il, dead these many years, but I can still hear his voice singing this song! Rest in peace, Glen, Leda, and Jimmy.

I love this song and the memories of my grandmother singing it to me in the 1950s. She had a print of a painting hanging on her bedroom wall that depicted a very sad looking Indian maid sitting beside a river in the moonlight. Strange how things like this move through all time. We remember those who sang it. Somewhere there was a young and beautiful girl like Red Wing, mourning for her lost love. Remembered for awhile, yet now even their bones are have turned to dust and been forgotten, the same as the graves of those left buried on the paths of the wagon trains. It's sad how our past slips sadly away.

I'm in my 20s, but I remember my grandma singing this to me as a kid. The words were slightly different in her version, but I'm so happy to have found it here, thank you! :)

The photos appear to be authentic, and if they are, they are beautifully haunting!Love the instruments. Great job, Jack. This must have been a delight for you to produce!

When we were little (way back in the very early 1960's) my mother would play this on her piano and sing while we danced our version of Indians around the campfire. Thanks for sharing this. Brought back such good memories.

I only know the instrumental version of this, so thanks for working out the arrangement! The lyric gives a different, sadder mood to the melody.
