Many of the early recordings, like this one, were of vaudeville performers. This is a 1907 recording of RED WING by Dudley and Mcdonough. I can just imagine a troop of vaudeville performers arrivng in a small town and performing this kind of material to crowds of country folk to whom this would have been probably the finest entertainment they had ever seen. Then to have this on a record you can play in your own home, truly a marvel of the new 20th century! Enjoy!

My grandma has been gone 40 years now.. and yet, hearing this put me back in the livingroom of our 1890 farmhouse with the piano, the woodstove and grandma's arms. Thank you for this..

I have my grandmother's recording of this same Little Red Wing. My mother said it was her mother's favorite record. My grandmother died before I was born. I remember playing the record as a child but now it now has a huge crack in it, held together with tape. No way to play it. Thank you so much for posting this!!!

my grandfather used to sing a comedy bit to this tune, went oh the moon shines tonight on Charley Chaplin, his pants need patching where hes been scratching lol that is all I can recall as it has been many decades since I heard his voice

This is the tune for "Union Maid" by Woody Guthrie. What a neat old recording.

Grandma used to sing me this playing her ukelele in her soprano voice. I asked her everyday to sing it for me. oh, good Lord, I miss her and those days!

she always brought out her "standby" one for me, slightly smaller but just my size. I was 5 and very simple to learn; for me only 3 chords--I can't tell you what they are, lol, but could show you. there should be a video somewhere how to pick it up. I'll look and/or you can too. So Fun. We also did simple chord songs like "Bringing in the Sheaves," etc.

Vaudeville and medicine show tours, records and folk traditio quickly made this popular composition into an "Old Time Tune". Tony Russell's Country Music Records shows 17 versions of this on record by country artists by 1942.
