John Elroy Sanford was born into poverty in St. Louis on December 9, 1922. With a ruddy complexion, Redd fast became a nickname. He derived Foxx from admirable Major League Baseball player, Jimmie Foxx. He left St. Louis for Chicago when he was 13, and supported himself by playing the washboard in a band. When the band broke up three years later, he hopped a train to New York City. It was there that he met Malcolm Little, a man who would later be known as Malcolm X. In The Autobiography of Malcolm X, he is referred to as “Chicago Red, the funniest dishwasher on this earth.”
Foxx began performing as a comedian/actor in black theaters and nightclubs, often referred to as the “Chitlin Circuit.” From 1951-1955 he teamed with comic Slappy White, a lifelong friend who would also act alongside him on Sanford and Son and The Redd Foxx Comedy Hour. While he was performing in Los Angeles, he was offered a deal with the Dooto record label. Foxx received $25 for his first recording. In the years to follow he would produce over 50 comedic albums. During the 1960s, as cultural barriers began to wear down, Foxx’s audience grew steadily. In 1972, after his film debut in Ossie Davis’ Cotton Comes to Harlem, Norman Lear signed Foxx as junk dealer Fred Sanford in a new NBC sitcom.
Sanford and Son, which co-starred Demond Wilson and Lawanda Page, was a big hit. So big, in fact, that it ranked in the top ten virtually every week it aired. At one point NBC even ran the show twice a week. When Foxx left in 1977, it was reportedly because NBC wouldn’t give him a dressing room with a window. Closer to the truth, however, might have been the generous salary offered to him by ABC. In an effort to weaken NBC’s powerhouse Friday line-up, ABC was determined to lure away the Sanford and Son star. It worked.
NBC’s ratings dropped continuously. Meanwhile, Foxx launched his own show, The Redd Foxx Comedy Hour. He was executive producer of the program, which first aired on September 15, 1977, and cast him alongside Sarah Hardy, Slappy White, “Iron Jaw” Wilson, Billy Barty, Hal Smith, Bill Saluga and The Gerald Wilson Orchestra. Foxx was excited about the variety show’s open forum, and planned to take full advantage of the opportunity. “I’ll be doing anything that can possibly be different from what’s been done before.” He said. “I’ll be doing skits, bits, obnoxious things.. I might do Romeo and Juliet with a gorilla.” In keeping with the show’s tone, during the introduction a list of guest stars that would not appear on the program was read. Real guest stars included comedian Andy Kaufman and Bob Einstein’s “Super Dave Osborne” character.
During the first episode, well aware that he was infamous for a special brand of comedic routines, he joked, “The only thing I can do from my nightclub act is smoke.” Foxx took live questions from the audience during his monologue, demonstrating his clever and on-the-ball wit. The program’s undisciplined nature made it extremely adventurous for the 1970s, and challenged both the audience and the censors to speculate what would transpire next. Nevertheless, having only been interested in hindering NBC’s progress, ABC wasn’t concerned with how Foxx faired at their network. The show was cancelled on January 26, 1978.
Foxx then took to Las Vegas, where he instantly became a headliner. He enjoyed performing there, and continued even while he launched another sitcom for ABC. On “The Redd Foxx Show,” he played Al Hughes, a likeable, friendly newsstand owner. The cast was a mix of former co-stars, including “Iron Jaw” Wilson, and new faces, such as Nathaniel “Rollo” Taylor, Barry Van Dyke, and Beverly Todd. The show did not fare well with audiences, however, and when production was terminated, Foxx left ABC for good.
In 1989, he and long-time friend Della Reese co-starred in Eddie Murphy’s Harlem Nights. Though the movie itself received little attention, critics took notice of the pair’s performance. CBS jumped and signed the two for a new sitcom, The Royal Family.
Sadly, while on the set of The Royal Family, Foxx suffered a massive heart attack. Reese bent over him and prayed, “Don’t die Redd, don’t die,” but it was too late. The world lost comedic genius Redd Foxx on October 11, 1991. Foxx is buried at Palm Memorial Park (also known as Palm Eastern Cemetery) in Las Vegas.

My father worked for Redd for 12 years in the 70’s/80’s. We lived in his Beverly Hills house for a year while we were getting established in Encino. Redd was a very generous man and was taken advantage of by many people that were close to him. He loved dogs and would take in strays all the time. When we lived in his home he had 6 dogs that were strays. He was one of the kindest men that I ever met. Towards the end had many issues, and may he RIP, and party in heaven with my father. . He will always be missed. One of the greatest comedians of all time.

My family lived across the street from that house in the 70's and my bus stop to go to Valley Highschool was right in front of his house. Back then there were grass and trees and beautiful landscaping on his entire property. Out front near the street where the bus stop was Red was thoughtful and kind enough to put a water fountain and a bench under a shade tree for us kids. We never saw him but to me that shows you the kind of person and neighbor he was at ❤️......A class act despite his Hollywood persona and tough exterior.

@@timothyturner1056 No you don’t know, sir. Remember the thief on the cross? He was unrepentant until a VERY short time before his death. Jesus said “Today thou shalt be with me in paradise”. You have NO IDEA what Redd Foxx might have prayed in his last moments. No idea AT ALL. Last time I looked, you weren’t listed as being present when he died. You like quoting The Bible, just make sure you quote all of it. And with that being said, “Ye shall know a tree by the fruit it bears”. It’s very true that Redd did not lead a life that was pleasing to Christ. But tell me how you grapple with the thief on the cross, and tell me how you were able to see into Redd’s heart in the moments before he died. You appear to be nothing more than another judgemental evangelical who talks out of both sides of their mouth. So judgemental, but also SO lacking in their compassion for others. I was not born until 1977 so the show was already on before I was born but my father used to watch this show a lot in the 80s and I used to watch it with him as a young child in Mississippi. I think great sitcoms are timeless so even now in 2022 I still watch Sanford and Son, Good Times, The Jeffersons, What's Happening, and All in the Family. I did not realize that Red has been gone so long. I always enjoyed him on Sandford and Son. His house looks pretty inconspicuous for being owned by a tv star and well- known comedian. I wonder how many people drove by it every day and did not know he lived there. RIP Redd.

I met him one day in 1988 at the Hacienda casino and he was so nice and laid back and we gambled on a couple of one armed bandits for awhile. Was such a comedic force and never really got all the respect he so deserved!

As a kid growing up in the 70's, I remember watching Sanford and Son on Tv. One of my favorite shows. Redd Foxx was so damn funny. I saw a couple of his standup performances, again, very funny. It so tragic how he had financial problems with the IRS. Rumor had it that Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy cast Redd Foxx in Harlem Nights so that Redd could have some money to help pay for some of his debts to the IRS. But, he was funny, dirty mouth for sure lol. But he was for sure entertaining; a true comedic genius. RIP Redd Foxx. Great video Scott. I've seen so many youtubers try to do videos of famous people, tell their stories and show their grave sites, but I have to say Scott, no one comes even close to your warmth and classiness that you put into your videos. Your videos are done with so much care and respect. Thank you!!

Normally a move to Las Vegas is a financial dream come true. Meaning, the taxes. The tax structure between California and Las Vegas is miles apart. For what ever reason Mr Foxx could not take advantage of this and went broke. Very sad ending to a comic genius . Thank you for your programs.

Thank you Scott for doing this vlog. I did not know that Redd Foxx was yet another American icon who was indebted to the IRS. Eddy Murphy was such a kind soul to pay for Redd's final resting spot. Thank goodness we still have people like Mr. Murphy in our lives. On to the next video! :)

Yep. Many celebrities find themselves in the same financial mess. Living too high on the hog, the wrong people managing your business affairs, etc. People like Sammy Davis Jr. died broke, Isaac Hayes lost much of his wealth even Elvis Presley had very little wealth and basically his home and property. Ofcourse, Elvis still had potential earning after his death, making many times as much money than he ever did when he was alive. His daughter and his former wife became very rich , but gave alot of it to the church of Scientology.
