Inspiring video, Ryan. It's amazing you were able to finish 100 miles on such short prep, but experience probably helps with the mental game, at least. I did the Jackson County 50k still nursing an injury, and it was good that I did not sign up for the 50 mile - my right leg would have never lasted on the steep downhill portions for that much abuse. I'll see how I feel at the end of January, but plan to sign up for the inaugural Knobstone Knockout 50K on March 15th.
@RyanClaytonFilms

You’re right, the mental game is so important!! Experience helped a lot here, I knew that each negative phase I was in would eventually end. Sorry to hear you’re injured, but glad you were able to get the 50k at Jackson County, I love that race. Good luck at knobstone!

It was nice to see you finish the race. I’m sure all of your muscle cells have been wondering when you were going to run your next 100-miler. One thing I noticed from you in this race was about the rejection of foods. After I ran a half marathon in training, my body really didn’t want me to eat a garden salad. So I think I can relate to you. On the other hand, macaroni and cheese was something I could eat a lot of very readily. Maybe for you, you can experiment more on what your body accepts or rejects through trial and error from training. I’m sure there are foods that your body will never reject under any circumstances. I want to keep watching your videos because you are always inspiring me to run longer distances. I just signed up for the Hilton Head Island Half Marathon, which will be a bigger mountain for me to climb, because I am more of a 10K runner. I’ve only run the half two times in my whole life and I am 39 years old, so I will see how this race treats me. If I get the courage, I want to do a marathon in March. At this point, it seems that for me to run an additional 13.1 miles from already running 13.1 miles-I’m not sure what to expect. Happy Holidays, Ryan!
@RyanClaytonFilms
@RyanClaytonFilms 4 года назад
Thanks Eduardo! And good luck training for your marathon, that will be so awesome for you to take on a new distance. And yeah, I agree with you about how the body just sometimes wants different foods. I've experimented with a lot over the years and sometimes it changes, just have to keep trying. One of the big things is using your nutrition during training. And with this race, I never had that chance so it was bound to happen the more I think about it. Anyway, getting rested up and looking at what I want to do in 2020, main thing is trying to stay injury free! Thanks for stopping by and good luck with getting ready for the Hilton Head Half and then a Marathon in March!! And Merry Christmas Eve!!

Haha, I think she was just overwhelmed because she was the only one checking in 100 milers and we all lined up at the beginning of check in! Thanks for the kudos, most of this ultrarunning game is mental! Well the loop was longer than advertised by about half mile, which doesn't sound bad, but when we were trying to pace exactly down to the cutoff for 6 laps, we realized that we were not going to make it with the extra 3ish miles, since we were going slower. We were able to pick up the pace and get it done, but just know that our watches had each lap a little over 17 miles, but the course might be different this year since the camp is in a new spot. Good luck in two weeks!!!!

Awesome. Epic performance and I love your storytelling in these videos. Brilliant video for the end of the year. About the nutrition issues halfway through..., you mentioned you couldn't eat cookies, chips, twizzlers, gels. Did you try any fruit (if available)? Also, were you able to eat anything after that half way point?
@RyanClaytonFilms
@RyanClaytonFilms 4 года назад
Thanks Will! I was trying to eat grapes at each aid station along the way, and had some apple slices too. But didn’t really have a lot just a handful of aid station food every few hours. Was doing mostly gels and drink mix up until when I got sick. And then after that couldn’t eat anything, keeps throwing up any solid food or gels. The only thing that stayed down was water and some Gatorade. It was a nightmare, but I just kept going, really not sure how it worked honestly. It’s an extreme I hope to never encounter again but I basically had no calories for the last 20 hours. I think I was staying in a low enough heart rate zone that I was relying on fat for fuel for the most part. I kept thinking that it was like a science experiment and we’re just going to see how far we can take it!! I’m sure a lot of it had to do with being terribly undertrained too. Thanks for asking!!

Thanks for stopping by!! Have you ever ran a race that started in the evening? How did you handle the prep time on the day? I've done a few now and like the format, it definitely has some different challenges though!!

Not a 100, but two of my favorite races when I was in Indiana were the Summer Nights and Winter Night Trail Marathons. Started at sunset. Certainly a different preparation strategy. Congrats!

@@prideandjoy5 Awesome, those are both great races. Yes, definitely a different style of prep!

Hey Ryan, first night race I did was Transgrancanaria in 2018. Came in super well trained...flew in the day of the race which started at 11pm that night. Couldnt sleep during the day and downed two pots of coffee with the thought of just get to the morning sun and I would be fine. Made it 30k before I had to lay down...set my watch for 15 minutes...woke up an hour and a half later fighting cutoffs. Istria 110k that same year started at 12am, made some changes and had a good go there. Also finished Lavaredo 119k this year which starts at 11pm. Make it to the sunlight...take it super easy the days prior. Dont stress. Keep it strong buddy.

I've ran that race once and crewed it twice. The 4 pm start is different but what the hell it's only running.

I ran a 50 miler in Tulsa several years ago that started at midnight. I was so stoked because it was a different experience. To prepare, I ate a big lunch, but only a small supper so I could get my digestive track working well and not be too full to start the race. It worked well.

Love watching your videos, you always seem to speak 'to' us out here, not above us. Only a new runner, so haven't even done a race long enough to go through the night yet, but have you ever looked into how digestion and absorption of nutrients from the bowel is influenced by circadian rhythms? (I'm just thinking of the times I did nights in A&E and would get 7 or 8 hours into 9pm-9am shift and just not be hungry, and yet 5 hours into a regular 8 hour day shift it hits 12:30-1pm and I'm ravenous.)
@RyanClaytonFilms
@RyanClaytonFilms 4 года назад
Thank you!!! Yeah I do notice that sometimes. I am less hungry at night but you have to keep eating to keep the energy flowing. It’s hard to do! On the other harden, the good thing is that most of the time, you are going somewhat slower during the night.

The only 24 hour I’ve done started at 7:30pm. Drawback was that I wasn’t fully rested after being up all day and traveling to the event. The hardest hours were in the early morning before dawn. Another time I attempted 70 miles on my own, starting at 9 PM of a very hot day, also with traveling. I dropped out about halfway. Planning to try that same course again, but with a 5 AM start.

@texascountryliving That's my experience as well. So hard to rest the day of. End up starting the race a little tired inevitably, and then for sure the 2-5am stretch is terribly hard!! Nice job even attempting 70 miles on your own, that's crazy! Good luck second time around!!

I have a marathon planned in about a month with a noon start, I think that might be pretty ideal.

Attempting my first hundred this year at this race. Just turned 40 so we gotta try. Looks like a fun atmosphere. Any advice for this particular race?
@RyanClaytonFilms
@RyanClaytonFilms 4 года назад
Awesome, this is a fantastic race to do your first 100 at. Just have one drop bag at the start/finish. I liked the tupperware box I brought, worked perfectly and had everything in there I needed. You'll see it ever 4-5 hours. Biggest piece of advice, and I would say this for most ultras but this one in particular, don't hang around the aid stations. Get in and get out of that start/finish area. I saw so many people quit because it's a comfortable place to sit, hang out with family, and listen to the live music. It's the best part of this race, but also dangerous if you get into a mental funk. Everyone there is partying but you need to get back on the trail. As you are finishing each lap, just pretend you are an Indy car and you need to get out of there in 10 minutes or less!! Good luck Joe!!!

Were you using Xoskin socks at this point? At 21 minutes you mentions gnarly blisters, so hats why I ask. I just purchased some from one of your last videos I saw a week ago.
@RyanClaytonFilms

Yeah I was using them, but the lead into this race was not ideal. Couple months off from injury and just two weeks back to running before trying this one. So my feet didn’t stand a chance no matter what shoes I had 🤣
