You nailed it, red. Organized chaos yet a musical masterpiece. Impossible, right!!!? Like someone said: listening to Rush is like witnessing a battle between 3 of them but somehow they manage to pull it off. Kudos also to the subscriber for requesting this.

Neil was indeed the best lyricist the world has EVER seen. Hands down. No one expressed themselves like he did. He set the bar so dang high, no one has touched it ever since, and no one will. This band is EXTRAORDINAIRE in every aspect.

Long...... long ago, when i was a young kid in English literature (yes I loved it) I had a 57 yr old teacher who always reminded us of Benny Hill. She asked us to bring Rush albums in because she thought Neil was one of the best modern day poets/writers of our day. I will never forget you for that Mrs Griffen.

This is one of my absolutely favorite songs from any artist. Watching them play it live never gets old! I think they really enjoy playing it live as well. 👍🤘 Neil was an avid reader and was well versed in so many topics and genres, fantasy, mythology, science, religion, etc. His lyric writing spanned all of these topics and more! Neil also wrote several books including Ghost Rider, Far and Near, and The Masked Rider.

49 for me. From 1983 at Radio City Music Hall through every tour culminating in 2015 in Greensboro, NC. I was 13 in 1983 and 45 in 2015. That's a lot of life from a pre=teen to a teen, to a young adult, through my 20's, growing up in my 30's, becoming a man, a dad (now an 'Army Dad'), a partner, middle-aged, losing SOME of my hair (!!!!!), a better drummer, hopefully a better human...etc....and they were around and a signature part of my life's scrapbook and soundtrack. They went from being superheroes and larger than life, to idols and eventually as I grew up a bit almost became friends who would show up every couple of years and we'd "catch up" in terms of their new songs and I loved that relationship. Me as the listener/consumer. they as the artist/performer. I was lucky in that I never had a desire to meet them or "hang" with them. I always preferred the relationship as it was. Never wanted to cross the "gilded stage" And now that I don't see them anymore, I can truly say that in my own weird way, I truly miss these guys. I miss them 'stopping by' every few years to check in. They meant so much to me.

It's hard to believe that just two months after this show was filmed, Neil would lose his daughter in a car accident, and then his wife to cancer just ten months later, leading him to take an extended hiatus from the band and ride his motorcycle all across North America as he worked to process his grief; he wrote of his journey in his book Ghost Rider, and in the same-named song from their 2001 album Vapor Trails, for which I highly recommend the performance from their show in Rio. Rest in peace Professor. 🥁 🥁 🐐 🐐

I am so glad to see that you have found THIS particular concert!! Yes, it is an excellent show from beginning to end BUT in addition Rush plays two deep cuts that are not often played live: "Nobody's Hero" and "Cold Fire." The official video for "Nobody's Hero" is exceptional but both tracks have outstanding lyrics, two true gems from the pen of The Professor. It may be asking too much but this piece that you have chosen plus the two I have named would make for a very special Triple Crown! That's my suggestion but I know that whatever you pick your reactions will be deeply satisfying! Let the music PLAY!!

It always amazes me that they can pull this off live. For all of the time changes and intricate playing, they could have easily kept this a studio piece but instead, they were determined to learn how to play it live, and to me, it sounds just as good as the studio version. Truly a one of a kind band!

The little moments they do during a concert, such as clowning around with each other while at the same time playing a complex musical number and not missing a beat, amaze me. You may remember back when you watched Xanadu, at one point Geddy leans in to whisper something to Alex and then Alex laughs at whatever was said. These guys are a couple orders of magnitude above being able to pat their head and rub their belly at the same time. Mult-tasking to the extreme.

Alex is the man. Love all three's talent, they are all virtuosos but as an axe-man myself I've always been drawn to his work. Working Man was the song that got them on the map and it's basically a 7 minute song with a 5 minute guitar solo. IMO the greatest guitar solo of all time is Part IV of La Villa Strangiato (A Lerxst in Wonderland)

I think it would be more correct to say they played the music. I don't believe at this point in their careers they could read, much less write music. Which of course makes it that much more amazing. I've heard interviews where on their last(?) tour they played an old song they had never played live before. They had to relearn it from listening to it and playing along. Even recently Alex was talking about some song and he hits a note and says something like "I think that's an E#."

My favorite Rush song of all time. Born out out of the remnants of "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," which Neil felt was out of place thematically for the rest of the songs on 1980's Permanent Waves, the boys came up with one of the greatest album closing songs EVER. Epic! Always a high point of any Rush concert--they loved to play it live because it is so challenging to execute.

The music, with its triumphant crescendo, completes the text giving this continuous sensation of evolving, changing at every chord progression, always adding something new, giving a sense of growth as in a Fibonacci sequence: wheel within wheels, time after time, a quantum leap forward, wave after wave, tide after tide. The use of all these "epanalepsis" amplifies the lyrics emotionally... and the song ends with the sound of the sea as it began (will flow and recede leaving life to go on as it was). "Art as expression - Not as market campaigns" takes up the Spirit of Radio (the beginning and end of the album merged togheter).

I love this particular performance of "Natural Science'! (They did it again on a later tour, but the tempo was slower than on this version). I love the opening with Geddy's vocal and Alex's guitar part, which reminds me of Joni Mitchell's open tunings (is that what Alex is actually doing? I'm not a musician). I also just really love the driving tempo and the changes throughout. The instrumental at the very end, where Neil comes in on an offbeat, is probably my favorite part of the performance. The lyrics are deep as you would expect from Rush. Thanks for reacting to this one! I can't remember if you've already reacted to my next suggestion, which is the live version of 'Secret Touch' from the Snakes & Arrows tour.

My first exposure to this song was when I first saw them in 1990, on the Presto tour. It truly was a transcendent experience. Though you do sort of contradict yourself when you called it "organized chaos" only to comment on how everything they do is filled with intention. Intension within chaos is a bit of an oxymoron. That said, I can understand how a casual listener could see a piece of this level of complexity could seem chaotic with the time and tempo changes. But there is a solid structure. Granted, it is a vast undertaking to perform live, they'd be the first to tell you that. It just comes down to learning each section, and a shnizzle ton of practice.

I couldn't imagine the physical toll it would take on one's body if they (or anyone) actually performed that many shows in a year! LOL

Wondering if they ever performed this song live without removing the second guitar solo and the verse - Art as expression, not as market campaigns Will still capture our imaginations Given the same state of integrity It will surely help us along

As much as I like Rush, I think it's time you head down the rabbit hole of Iron Maiden. First song, Hallowed be Thy name. 1982.

Permanent Waves was there attempt to keep there contract going as the label was wanting to shelf Rush after Hemispheres flopped. The next album Moving Pictures was THE one record that saved Alex, Geddy and Neil's arses as the label was wanting more Top 40 hit songs from them. "Tom Sawyer" single-handedly did much more than I believe they ever expected by launching them into Rock and Roll Superstardom in 1981! Oh, and thanks for fixing your Microphone! I use a very powerful sound rig with my computer's and the low frequency rumble is annoying and makes sub-woofers distort! You gained a new Sub! 😁

I actually watched this yesterday before you pulled it as the song sound was working, just not your mic. Even without the sound I could tell by your face you loved it

Music that is well written ..Survives a three major components ,Tension, Building, and Release, If these things are not well built in the body of the music ,then you only have sounds and noise. This piece of music is a great example of Tension Building or suppense and Release.
