Rediscovering the Roland VS-2480: A Timeless Classic
In the ever-evolving landscape of music production technology, the Roland VS-2480 remains a cherished relic of the past, yet its allure persists. But what is it about this vintage workstation that continues to captivate musicians and producers alike?
A Brief History:
Released in the early 2000s, the Roland VS-2480 was ahead of its time, offering an all-in-one solution for recording, mixing, and mastering. Its robust features and intuitive interface made it a favorite among professional studios, but its hefty price tag meant it was out of reach for many aspiring musicians.
The Appeal Today:
Fast forward to the present day, and the VS-2480 has become more accessible as prices have dropped significantly. For those who fondly recall its heyday, the nostalgia factor is undeniable. But beyond nostalgia, the VS-2480 still holds its own as a powerful recording tool. Its seamless integration with DAW software makes it a versatile addition to any studio setup.
The VS-2480 Experience:
What sets the VS-2480 apart is its combination of analog warmth and digital precision. Its built-in effects processors and motorized faders provide a tactile and immersive recording experience that is unmatched by purely software-based setups. And for those who prefer a hands-on approach to music production, the VS-2480 offers a level of control and flexibility that is hard to replicate.
In Conclusion:
While newer technologies may offer more advanced features and greater convenience, the Roland VS-2480 remains a testament to the enduring appeal of classic recording gear. Its blend of nostalgia, affordability, and sonic excellence ensures that it will continue to hold a special place in the hearts of musicians and producers for years to come.

I bought mine when it came out. I used it as a 16 track recorder for full live band recordings. I ran a 16 channel snake to my garage and this unit was parked in an upstairs bedroom. Just the drum kit had 8 mics and the other 8 were for instrument mics. I also bought the breakout box that allows you to export your tracks to a DAW. Unfortunately they didn't upgrade the firmware to be able to use the 2480 as a live interface for a DAW. That would've been a huge game changer. I still have it but my needs have changed to where I get more out of a 2x2 interface and VSTi for Superior Drummer, Amplitube 5 for guitars/bass. The beauty of computer recording is that you can hear the track wet but record it dry. That allows unlimited tweaking on your effects without having to record over. Recording wet is set in stone. If I was going to live track bands again I would use my 2480 in a heartbeat. It is a portable powerhouse.

I bought a VS-2480CD brand new in 2005 and kept it until 2016, when I reluctantly had to sell it due to financial issues. I loved it with the add-on VGA monitor, and the ability to master directly to audio CD inside the unit was cool. As I recall, one of the downsides was only having 2 onboard FX cards, so you had to be choosy about what to do with them.

I had this back in the day when it was new and it was stolen. I never learned everything it could do, I'd love to get another one.

Dam that's messed up. They were not cheap by any means. You can get pretty ow especially compared to back then. Always tell people it all depends on what you use to now and what you looking to get out of it.

Thanks for posting this. I bought the 2480 when it came out, and used it for several years. I haven't used it for quite a while, but your video has inspired me to revisit it. I belong to a FB Roland VS 2480 group, and on there they speak about the capacitors drying out and needing to be replaced. I'm hoping once I power it back up that I don't encounter any problems like that.

The capacitors is a risk at failing at this point. That's the catch in dealing with older electronics. Hope yours workout good

great vid. I still use old digital multitrack reocrders for the same reason...couldn't afford em when they dropped, but now machines like the roland VS series, Yamaha 4416, akai dps and korg d3200 can be found for $100 - $200. Reliable, great sound and more focused than the endless options in a DAW. Glad u got your hands on one.

the good thing of the mouse is , its very cheap to buy a new one when it broke. but the sliders and buttons on your vs are not easy to fix or find replacement for them, and of course its expensive to repair . i use always my mouse on my MV 8000 .

You have a point. That is like telling a driver of a Toyota Supra with big turbo. Drive in a way that the turbos won't spool up. It's cheaper not to use them.

This is so cool. 👍These really are timeless classics. 👌 And I am more referring to the line of VS recorders Roland made. I know the VS-2480 is a wonderful machine. But there’s also the VS-1680, or the VS-2400. And the one that I own, which is the last of that series of recorders. The VS-2000cd, which came out in 2003. It is the only one that has a USB connection. Which, in theory could be cool right? Yeah, and that’s it… in theory. But it’s only for transferring audio/ Projects off of the HD, just to make room. There is some software to convert that. If you don’t have that then there’s nothing you can do with it on a laptop or pc. You can potentially screw those up too if you try to open them on a pc. Then they might not open anymore on the VS. Great right?! 🙄 So much for that thing, that appeared to be so handy. 😎 But for the rest of it, it’s really still a very good recorder, editor and mastering machine. 👌 And I say that without any bias whatsoever. 😄🤣 Anyway… Thanks for this VS-2480 appreciation video, it’s great. Have a nice day y’all. 👍🙂

They are classics. I haven't gotten into converting off of the HD. Definitely something I need to look into to future proof myself

How or what are the connections that are used to hook to the computer?
@biggrime
@biggrime 4 месяца назад
Presonus makes a interface called V-fire that you can use to connect to computer. In my setup I do not hook it up to a computer. I use the VS-2480 as the "computer" For me the whole point of using the VS-2480 is to get away from the computer. The monitor is connected to the vs-2480 and displays what's on the VS2480

@raysmusic49 run the factory test first. Cold boot holding F1 + Page key on desk and it will boot I to factory test where he can check for HDD as well as test the Faders, lights and DSP chips (which indicate the dry capacitor error and no audio type issues)
