One of the best devices for gaming and media consumption, but there are some compromises.

I feel this is one of the more in-depth reviews on your channel (probably because of all the interesting features), and I really enjoy it. The in-display camera for a gaming phone is pretty genius. The heart rate feature was a surprise as well. Not a phone gamer myself (and would want a phone with good cameras) but dang this phone is an interesting one.
@axhng
@axhng 2 года назад
thanks!!! I think there are other phones with in-display sensor that can do heart rate monitoring like the realme gt2 pro. I think with mobile chipset hitting their thermal limits these days, gaming phones with proper cooling are becoming more and more relevant. it was kinda the same with the redmagic 6 with SD888 too, which was a powerful but pretty hot chip. RedMagic phones with their internal cooling fan can really extract the most out of these powerful chipsets. I have a friend using the iPhone 13 Pro complaining about the screen dimming and throttling after a longer gaming session too, so it's not just an Android thing. So for really avid gamers, gaming phones could legit be a good option. not to mention the extra features could give them an advantage in some games too. That said, it'll still be nice if the camera was better though. 😂

@@axhng Ooh, I guess the Iphones have their issues too. But yeah, speaking of all these powerful chipsets, I've just come to a point where I feel they're kind of unnecessarily powerful, like if we can't maximise their usage....but I guess that's how businesses have to sell new phones every year. If the gaming phones do take extra steps for waterproofing, even without the ratings, that'll give some confidence boost for people as well. And yep, definitely better cameras.
@axhng
@axhng 2 года назад
@@MebiManga yeah. same here pretty much. like the SD8 Gen1 is powerful without a doubt, but it draw more power and also generate more heat. so phones end up needing to throttle more. The only exception being phones like the redmagic 7 pro with a ton of cooling measures. But even then, battery life is still a concern, seeing that it uses more power than even Sd888 phones. Though not sure if it's possible to do the type of cooling that these chipset needs while having IP rating though, especially with that cooling fan haha. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I personally feel like efficiency is probably more important these days, so kinda interested in phones with the Dimensity 8100 chip, which is looking really good so far. but with everything that going on right now, seems like it might take a well before they start hitting global markets.

@@axhng righht ok i don't know too much about the mediatek chips but it looks like their flagship ones are already pretty damn good as well. Cooling phones reminds me of my previous Oppo phone where it would get very hot when I played ML/PUBG (sometimes while charging which now I know is a stupid thing), and I would slap wet tissues at the back of the phone to cool it down hahaha

@@axhng about charging from 0% to 100% only took 23min for global ver. ? I though it was chinese ver.
@axhng
@axhng 2 года назад
@@kru-tagaming4469 I was surprised too, since the OPPO Find X5 Pro with 80W charger and same 5000mAh battery took like 35-40 mins to charge from 0-100%. But i tested it a few times using the included 65W charger, and both took 23 mins from 0-100%. I think it has more to do with better heat dissipation. So the phone charged at higher output longer than other phones. The chinese version i think can do 0-100% in like 15 mins or so based on some reviews i saw from chinese reviewers.

Hi does it have ultra performance setting on Cod mobile game in game setting?as for red magic 7 only have max setting at the moment not yet ultra setting.
@axhng
@axhng 2 года назад
yeah. there's no ultra performance settings just yet. only max. don't recall seeing that on the Find X5 Pro with SD8Gen1 too so it's probably just not optimised for the chipset yet. Game developers will probably need more time i guess. I see the same with games like Mobile Legends where the Sd8Gen1 devices don't support the highest "ultra" graphics settings too, just "high", whereas older SD888 devices do. This happened when SD888 was still new as well, so i'm sure eventually the games will be updated to support the newer chips.

Hey man, great review, seriously. I watch a lot of review videos and for the most part they’re all the same. I’ve got a few questions for you and anyone else willing to answer. I’m kinda torn between this phone and the Vivo X Note. Mainly it’s the screen sizes but, 6.8 vs 7 doesn’t seem like that big of a difference especially with an uninterrupted screen. But the lack of software support is a very big deal. I’ve never owned a red magic phone before. What are your thoughts on this phone vs the Vivo in terms of software and customization?
@axhng
@axhng 2 года назад
Thanks a lot! hmm. even putting aside the software minimal support on RedMagic, vivo's software experience is better to me. that said, it's still behind other brands like OPPO or Samsung though, even though their hardware and camera performance are usually solid. they have their own weird quirks like app drawer grid layout being stuck at 4 horizontally despite changing home screen grid to 5x6, it's more aggressive at killing background apps (activity trackers like adidas runtastic), and other smaller things. But at least they did promise 3 years of updates for their higher end devices, so X Note might have that type of support too. Since the newer vivo devices aren't out yet globally, hard to say if it will be any different for now, and can't really based on Chinese reviews since they seem to use OriginOS instead of the FunTouchOS on global variants. For RedMagic, software experience is definitely one of its bigger shortcomings along with camera performance. they don't seem too keen to fix the translations that I've seen since the RedMagic 5S, and it feels a bit lacking in polish at times. which is why unless gaming is the top priority for you, the higher price makes it a bit harder to outright recommend. and if you're just looking for a secondary device just for gaming, the cheaper RedMagic 7 might make more sense unless you really like the new flatter design. since it has active cooling as well, performance should be just as good. i don't think any phone without active cooling will be able to take full advantage of the SD8 Gen 1. anyway, the X Note will probably still be a bit more well rounded overall for day to day use imo, especially if software (and camera) is important to you. but i would wait for reviews of global version first though. :)

@@axhng Wow, thank you so much for your detailed and thoughtful response. I really appreciate your time and opinion. I think I’ll be going with the Vivo phone. Software is very important to me. I just really love the way the 7 Pro look’s and that screen. I wish it was bigger but, maybe next year or maybe Asus will make their own uninterrupted, big screen phone. Again, thank you very much for response. Be well.

The red magic 7 has 3 air vents, while the 7 Pro only has 2, but does the Pro offers better temperatures and cooling due to the metal back plate?. I'm planning to get one this week but not sure weather the 7 or 7 Pro. I just want which offers better thermals.
@axhng
@axhng 2 года назад
I would highly highly recommend waiting for the 7S or 7S Pro if possible. SD8+ Gen 1 is a very noticeable upgrade in terms of thermals and battery life. Even for performance it seems a bit smoother as well. Either one of these will handily beat the 7 and 7 Pro. and between the 7S and 7S Pro, I don't have the 7S so can't say for sure. But from in depth comparisons I've seen from chinese reviewers, the 7S Pro performs better in terms of thermals. It ran cooler no matter whether the fan is on or off compared to the 7S. you can check out this video at this timestamp. they have all the data up there. and if you can't read chinese, you can take a screenshot and use google translate. but even without, should be able to roughly guess what the data is saying. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-liaFOAFi9rc.html

Which us better for gaming rm7 or rm7pro?
@axhng
@axhng 2 года назад
hmm. i've not tried the RM7, but just for gaming, probably RM7 for a few small reasons like having a bit of bezels which is a little easier to grip, slightly protruded corners which makes the shoulder trigger a little nicer, and it's lighter too, so a bit less tiring I guess? RM7Pro does have more battery, but then Sd8Gen1 is such a power hungry chip that I feel like it's not going to matter as much. not to mention you're probably going to want to make full use of that "charge seperation" feature as well to reduce heat and degradation on the battery.

not sure what you mean since i just need to put in my sim card and will be able to get cellular data? reception seems fine. it's hard to tell if it's better than others or not since i'm in an area with good coverage, but at least i haven't noticed any issues with reception compared to other phones.

torn between getting this or the rog phone 6
@axhng
@axhng 2 года назад
i think at this point, better to wait till the RedMagic 7S Pro. based on their website, they're launching the global version in like 9 days or so. from all the tests i've seen for the Chinese variant, SD8+ Gen1 is a huge upgrade. Then if it's between 7S Pro and ROG Phone 6, i think it would depends on what you prefer. if you're playing Genshin, and you don't want to bring around an extra cooling fan around, the RedMagic 7S Pro with the built in fan will be able to handle the game better. that said, software experience, camera, will probably be better on the ROG Phone 6. it has some IP rating too. But my main concern with Asus phones in general is quality control. there are quite a few reports of their phones (ROG 3, 5, ZenFone 8) having issues which requires a motherboard replacement to fix. :/
@XxMdNsRxX
@XxMdNsRxX 2 года назад
@@axhng yes asus is too fragile. i got rog phone 2 and 5.. 2 has trigger issues and the glass broke when i dropped it from waist level even with hard casing. i switched from 5 to black shark 4. thought of going for a redmagic this time round but dont know if i should. cos on a malaysia fb group alot were complaining about battery issues that the batt drained drastically even without doing anything. and no update supports.
@axhng
@axhng 2 года назад
for the redmagic 7 pro, i didn't have random battery drain, but when gaming, battery drain is pretty heavy though. but 7S Pro should be way better based on comparisons I've seen. the update part is true though. Redmagic isn't the fastest when it comes to updates, and they are not that fast when patching bugs too. :/ Gaming wise the 7S Pro probably wouldn't have any issues at all considering it has one of the most stacked cooling systems on a phone (teardown shows it has some improvement over the 7 pro too), but i think main thing is just whether you are okay with their software and camera performance. 😂 i'm actually tempted by the rog phone 6 as well (also the ZenFone 9). it looks to be a more balanced device overall, and it should be able to handle genshin with an external cooler. but the main thing holding me back is still the motherboard issue though. I wonder if it's because Asus likes to use a more complicated stacked motherboard design compared to the single layer one on redmagic phones (which tends to be better at heat dissipation). i wonder if that stacked design could be a bit more prone to failure when put under high heat/stress. anyway, looking at long term. if the motherboard dies after the 1 year warranty, i have no idea if Asus will cover it. if not, it's basically just a ton of money down the drain. Whereas for redmagic, even if it doesn't get software updates after a year, the phone will at least most likely still be usable considering I haven't seen complaints about major hardware failures. So yeah... i kinda feel you too. it's a tough choice for sure. but for now, until i know for sure Asus has fixed their motherboard QC issues... i will probably lean more towards redmagic.

The video below is in chinese, but at the timestamp I've linked, they mention the power draw when playing genshin at highest graphics, and for RedMagic 7 Pro it's about 10W. So my guess is that any higher than that should be safe? Hope this helps! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CBXUTqJvtIQ.html
