While in San Francisco I saw all these ‪@Waymo‬ self driving cars running around and got curious about them. So I looked them up, realized they were taxis, then ordered one up to try it out for myself!

All Waymo cars are Jaguar iPace. Plenty of non-self driving ones in the UK. Early ones had a couple of issues (leaky windscreen and dodgy cells in some of the batteries) but broadly speaking they're reliable and well regarded cars. Quick, too - all versions of them have a standard 400hp, AWD drivetrain.

I recently rented a car that had some of the new fangled driver support features… none of which I have ever had or used. After a few day, I started playing with some of the options… Speed Control, worked as expected; Proximity Detection, kept me a safe [selectable] distance from vehicle in front of me, although had glitches where it would scare the hell out of me…approaching an intersection, with traffic slowing and following distance reduces, then vehicle in front [quickly] shifts to left turn lane, my vehicle now sees LOTS of clear space ahead and ACCELERATES towards the traffic ahead… That is stopped for the red light !!! … causes seatbelt test! The best though… is Lane Control, that I found great for long straight roads, but found out it simply turns itself OFF on somewhat curvy roads… of course it turns itself OFF right in the middle of a curve and IMMEDIATELY thinks going straight is a good way of letting you know it’s time for you to pay attention. Having that experience makes me think I might not be comfortable in a totally automatous taxi.

As a caregiver to elderly with early dementia, and having relatives with autism, I think this is great. Not only can I pay attention to my client or family member while 'driving' them somewhere; but hopefully it can be programmed so the adult can only go to certain locations, like their family members house, or the hospital, if unaccompanied. Lots of exciting possibilities here!

We had a family friend who lived in the Bay Area and she bought a new car every 2 years. In about 1963 she bought a Jaguar sedan. She was an archeologist and drove any back roads she wanted without any concern whatsoever. In 1965 she sold it back to the dealer and bought a new Mustang. A couple of weeks later the dealer told her she got rid of it just in time because the transmission died. She was a wonderful lady.

Understanding that getting better is the natural progression of new technologies it amuses me that the naysayers of new sustainable energy systems poo poo them for being “inefficient” as if they are never going to advance. Fleets of Waymos with drivers mapped the city for a solid year, if not more, 24 hours a day. Information on the company was pretty limited, creeped a lot of people out. There are still issues, but nowhere near as its' competitor, Cruise. They were a disaster. One drove into a very active construction zone. A lane, running the length of an entire city block, with multiple cones, barriers, electronic signs, trucks and many workers in vests, it maneuvered around all of that and drove into freshly poured concrete. Not too soon after, one hit a pedestrian and their permits were suspended.

None of that matters since both Cruise and Waymo have significantly better driving records per mile driven than human drivers. Is not even close. Also, the Cruise vehicle that hit the pedestrian wasn't being controlled autonomously. A remote human driver had taken over.
@marymaclaren9553
@marymaclaren9553 6 дней назад
@@damonhtoo Let me preface this with I am pretty indifferent when it comes to Waymo. I personally have not seen anything egregious from their cars. Although recently there have been rumblings of Waymo playing with their reported accident numbers. And I do side eye when they 'rest' they pull minimally over to the curb on a narrow street, with all lights out at 4am. I work overnights and see their odd parking. Cruise on the other hand. You may even have an answer to this, but I have to wonder what the breakdown is of how many cars were on the streets and at what time of day and when the majority of their reported accidents occurred. Because I would see far more Cruise cars out and about at low traffic times of night than peak times during the day. Yeah, human driver errors. I'm partial to taking cabs and it is still very common to see Ubers and Lyfts going the wrong way on a oneway street.

That was quite the experience. How does your wife backseat drive with no driver?

In another video the waymo tells Casey it’s a fan of his videos and proceeds to lock him in the car and takes him for a wild ride out into backroads and purpose gets itself stuck just to make him get himself out of another precarious situation.

Very interesting. If the self-driving cars can navigate San Francisco that’s a major feat and forward step for me to trust in its capabilities. Looks like the technology will definitely be sticking around and be common place even in my lifetime. Pretty cool!

They've been driving autonomously for like five years in SF and are doing 100K rides per week.

That’s so cool. I absolutely despise driving in a downtown area: pedestrians, one way streets, impatient drivers and poorly displayed street signs or buildings. Can’t wait to try this service. I’d even like to try one out when they start offering services between cities.

My 5 year old Tesla drives itself between cities now. Anywhere in the US (and possibly Canada - haven’t tried that yet). And it can go more than 40mph. What you saw with Waymo was certainly impressive if you’re not up to date on this self-driving technology. But Tesla’s Full Self Driving is clearly the state-of-the-art to someone who is knowledgeable about self-driving cars.

@@Dave-ei7kkcan tesla drive itself tho? they don't even have a permit yet to do driverless rides. It doesn't matter if tesla can drive all over the USA it doesn't do it driverless it has a human supervising and can take over if it messes up. With waymo it does all the driving no supervision or babysitting needed. Waymo chooses to go the speed limit for passenger comfort it can drive faster just is programmed not to lol.

@@pennytrui1149 LOL for sure. Go buy yourself a Waymo and tell me how useful it is. Wait, you don’t have $120,000? They won’t sell you one? The government won’t let you buy and operate one either? Wonder why? I can drive my own Full Self Driving Tesla anywhere I want. 😉

@@Dave-ei7kk ok whatever lmfao the conversation wasn't about if i can buy a waymo. Where is anyone talking about buying a waymo? the conversation was about how good it is comparing both their driving not if i can buy one. The facts still stand tesla is behind waymo as it's not driverless lmfao.

@@pennytrui1149 Don’t both Waymo and Cruise have operations centers staffed 24/7 that can remotely control their “driverless” cars when they get into trouble. That is one of the many reasons that they can only operate in limited geographic areas that offer good remote connectivity for the drivers. In Tesla’s case they rely on the owner to supervise the driving behavior of the car so they don’t have that limitation. In reality I think both systems are supervised. But you can buy a Tesla with Full Self Driving in the $40K range and it will function even on new roads that haven’t been mapped. And as we know, roads are changing all the time. That ability to read the road without a high definition map to serve as a guide is way more sophisticated than you can imagine. My Tesla drove me 36 miles today without me having to touch the steering wheel. That included city streets, highways @ 70mph in traffic, and avoiding bicyclists, pedestrians and construction barriers in the roadways. I live in the Minneapolis, MN area, not California. Waymo was not an option. If you’re really interested in this topic and not just a troll you might want to tune into the Tesla event being held on 10/10/2024 where they will unveil more about their robotaxi deployment plans.
