This movie does have a few loose ends that get rather left behind. I enjoyed all the pieces of life that it shows us, but I could see how some people might be annoyed that certain story lines aren't revisited.
Great review. There are some undeservedly forgotten movies nowadays and Reds is one of them. I love this movie. Some movies seem to fade out of public awareness and it's a shame because even as unbalanced an uneven as they may be there is often a lot in them that can enthrall and captivate us. You are right, this is a movie about selfless people that gave their life for an ideal. John Reed is considered a hero of the revolution and is actually buried in the Red Square mausoleum where other heroes of the revolution, Lenin himself, are buried. He wasn't a minor presence in the revolution and however that may be regarded today, given the fact that the bolshevik revolution of 1917 gave way to a pretty abhorrent regime, responsible for a lot of suffering and killing, there should still be a way to acknowledge this and Reds may be a way to do it. It's not about celebrating the revolution but instead the fact that at least he tried to fight for a better tomorrow for us all, while the rest of us sit on a couch watching television and getting numb and fat, and ended up paying the ultimate price, he died in Moscow five years and five days into the revolution. I am a social-democrat, not a communist or a socialist, and I am fascinated by figures like John Reed. Reds is an absolute masterpiece.
I discovered this movie around 2008 or 2009. When I asked my parents about it my dad, a staunch Cold War era Army vet, said that in 1981,82 he wouldn’t watch it even if he’d heard of it. Especially then. Well they finally watched it in 2017-18 and LOVED it.
@@TobinFitzthum You should watch some of the stuff I mentioned whenever you can, in one of your other videos you mentioned semi knowing David Mamet, Oleanna by him is a really unknown film that’d make for a good review. Could see some people thinking it’s boring but If I liked it I think you’d be alright. That’s just one as well, past 3 months I’ve seen loads of good stuff, To Sleep With Anger is brilliant
@@CodPatrol ah yes always down for a Mamet film. I'll try to do one of those when I'm home over the winter. My parents like him too. I'll check out some of your past recs too. I don't really have any themes or ideas for the rest of the year.
