In this Quick Tip, Elly Wade (@itwaselly) shows how to render an alpha pass with a transparent background, as well as how to enable refraction (transparency) to affect the alpha channel itself.
Recorded with Redshift 3.5.15 and Cinema 4D 2023.2.1

It would be awesome if you could upload a tutorial on how to have the post-effects in a separated pass. I've seen this topic on forums for years

Great tip. I didn't know about this. I'm sure there's something I'm missing but It seems to me that the "refraction affects alpha channel" setting should be on by default.

And not hidden in System > Legacy

There is a reason why it's in legacy. This is from the RS manual- "Enabling "Refraction Affects Alpha Channel" may be a desirable workflow but please keep in mind that compositing renders on top of other elements will not be technically correct since material refractions should bend the rays. Refraction affects alpha can be overridden per-material with the Opacity Affects Alpha Channel parameter found in the advanced section of a Redshift material." The best way to work with alpha channels with transparency is probably to composite them. The legacy option is fine too but there will be a slight loss of detail

life saver! Why is the refraction affects alpha channel option hidden away in the legacy settings?

Can you use this method to render objects with shadows without having to render the floor they sit on?

Pls a little help here. I tried rendering glass with the help of the tutorial and it worked but the roughness that I added to the glass was totally lost when I finished rendering, became like vector. What is it I'm doing wrong?

why isnt material transparency just enabled by default?

And why is this option considered “legacy”?

Maybe you should caveat that it isn't best practice to render to PNG and that it will increase render times. Using EXR with DWAA compression will result in a smaller file with faster render times and is the industry standard. I've worked with far too many sloppy freelancers in my time and PNG is the devil. It's disappointing to see Maxon using it in their tutorials.

Appreciate the tip. I "was" definitely one of those freelancers. Mostly because clients don't know how to use files that are not common. So that would be MT default. If I was working on a team, I'd usually go with the best format I can, typically Exr32bit. I had no idea we could get a similar file size out of exr!

GOOD EXAMPLE OF HOW NOT TO DESIGN UI. Bury key features in legacy.

Nice how Maxon buries commonly used features so deep into an endless series of hidden/sub menus. ...and C4D is supposed to be 'easy' to use. It's not 'easy', we just get used to how stupidly made this app is.
