I always thought it was just because people thought their kin looked red, but the story about the term being used in hunting of bodies is the first time I ever heard about that. It's hard to believe that people are still racist towards Native Americans today. I believe them it's just surprising and saddening.

Autismo Jones Let's break it down... "that is what happens when people consume negativity (animal products)" When people consume (eat or use) animal products (meat, fur, whatever)... "they put it out too." Negativity... So... How is that wrong?

+Melody Weckel The Story about the Bounties is true except the part about the scalps being called Redskins.. They just called them scalps. THE PEOPLE were called Redskins which is defined as An American Indian. The Term Redskin is a Literal Translation of a Native SELF Identifier from the Algonquin Languages THESE are the facts... you can research and find them just as I have. I am Apache from the Red Paint People and I am not offended by the term. WORDS don't scare me. They have no power over me nor do the people that willfully misuse the words.

When John Oliver was still on The Daily Show, he did a segment on the Washington Redskins. The Daily Show brought in Washington fans and ask them if the word [Redskin] was offensive. They all collectively said "NO". So they brought in the counter argument, which were people from several tribal nations. And John Oliver said: "go ahead, call any person here Redskin, if you don't think it's an offensive term"? Not one Washington football fan said a thing.

Oh stop. The entirety of the teams in Boston in the 30s was in an AGREED commemorative respect/tribute to Natives. It wasn't taken as disrespect nor was it disrespectful the first time the word was ever used. Figures the great great grandkids would cry over it. Was it a tragedy? Damn right. But acting like a word originally spoken out of fear/respect is damaging just makes Natives look like pussies. Which is actually offensive.

that girl really got me confused. she was explaining how offensive it is to be called 'redskin" then says two slurs that are against chinese and black people like it's nothing. they were oppressed too and that word was used to systematically oppress them and it's really offensive. their is a whole other history that is not written in books and passed down thru the generation. it is not to create hate but to remember the sacrifices our ancestors made. most did not make it unfortunately. but its still hard today when I see my grandma and she tells me she was taken from her home and hit with a stick every time she used her native language. she was left handed and they tied her arm back to make her use her right hand. she was no longer aloud to pray, to use her corn pollen and cedar. she was also called a "redskin" by her teachers in the boarding school often. these stories from her make me understand what she was forced to give up in her life. this taught me to be tolerant and kind to all races. in doing this I think of my grandma. sometimes a kind person is what we need when we have nothing.

I'm sorry about your family and your people. It's shocking to me to hear something like that happened as recently as your grandmother, because the U.S. tries to make it seem like all the brutality and injustice was in the distant past and is no longer relevant. It makes me sick that people consistently try to minimize this kind of systemic cruelty. I am Black, not Native (that I know). And while I can't pretend to know exactly how you feel, I deeply empathize with it. From one minority to another, I sincerely apologize that this happened and give you well wishes. I hope your grandmother is well.

I’ve seen dozens of natives who had reddish skin or red undertones, its most visible when they’re in sunlight. Look at pictures of peruvian Incas and you’ll notice the reddish tint in their skin. Also not all natives take offense to being labeled as “red”, many natives have have accepted the label and some even embrace it. Red is an awesome color anyway, you should take pride in your skin color

Native Americans were also the ones who made the logo and the name... back in 1933 Washington Redskin was born to represent the very four players that were on that team that were native Americans... all I see is a bunch of white folks and black people telling native Americans that they should be offended by this when they're not... How f***** up is that???
@ezra5788
@ezra5788 4 года назад
Your logic is like, ''if black people call each other the N word why cant a team be called the N words?"... Redskin is a racial slur, just like the N word. Natives using it does not mean it is not an offensive word, especially when used by a non Native American. Just like black people use the N word, but it is offensive when a non black person uses the N word on a black person. Racial team names and mascots have no place in a modern society.

I felt terrible when I heard this one girl say the n-Word multiple times. Through rap music and people in the black community who use it all the time, to me it became normal to hear it. But since the BLM protests startet I regained sensitivity towards that expression especially because I understand the history of it better now and that it swings with it every time this word is used. Hearing her saying the n-word was the first time I really heard the discriminating tone, that never was transmitted to me through songs or anything. Hearing it feels just like a slap directly in the face even though I am White. It must be just the same with the r-Word. I will intensify my efforts to cut all racist terms from my vocabulary and pass this on to my friends and family and strangers!
